Moving to a Remote Cottage in the Lake District National Park I Winter

- At the end of last year, after a surprise change of life plans, we moved to a remote cottage in the Lake District National Park.
A 300-year-old building with stone walls, stone floors and a wood burner.
It’s 8 miles from the nearest town, up in the Cumbrian hills, surrounded by sprawling landscapes, peaks and sheep. Lots of sheep. There’s no TV, internet is patchy as hell, the best phone signal is up a hill and you’ll need What3Words to find it.
Oh, and we don’t drive, but we really love to cycle...
We've never lived anywhere like this before and didn't know what to expect. We also accepted that perhaps it wouldn't end up working out.
Now we're 3 months in and it's been one huge adventure, filled with highs, lows, new experiences and constant learning curves.
We wanted to put together an honest insight into life in a remote cottage.
Thanks for watching,
Josh & Sarah :)

5 minutes into this video and you got me ! this is the life I would have loved and never got 🥴I’m 79 years old now so it’s too late for me , so I will live my dream through you , I will go through your previous posts to see your story and what brought you here. You have youth on your side and I wish you every happiness in your chosen lifestyle, you are fortunate indeed 😘🇬🇧
In a world where materialism and possessions have become the object of desire it's so refreshing to see you both in nature living in a way that requires endurance, commitment and perseverance- this is what is called living. I am in awe of you both. Thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you so much! We do prefer a simpler, slower pace of life. The rat race isn't for us. Thank you!
As Derbyshire beef farmer who lives 2 miles from either a pub or neighbors,,living in isolation definitely has it's ups+downs,,Liked this video.💯🇬🇧💯
Hey Mark, very true, dips and swings but unique for sure.
Yes,I too moved further out into the country farmlands of Norfolk, glorious and cold and warm, nature all around. Then my beloved husband died and living alone became too sad for me and now totally alone I still live close to nature but on the edge of small town life.I admire those who are ok totally alone, but the sharing is the best part..thanks for sharing guys ..
@@dianajohn9150 Norfolk is very beautiful. The sunrises and sunsets 😍 I'm glad you've found a balance between nature and community. As much as we love nature, I think we like a balance of the two as well
Shame on you for killing animals.
@@smileandsaycheese44 people have to eat,,and you do too..
People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones..
A few tips for someone whose been there done that... we would go to the library to download when we would go once a week. The fire...I cooked on a wood cookstove for 15 years. Learn to 'bank' that fire... it's a blessing and saves having such a cold house. We also had 3 years of no hot water and had to boil, keep water on stove always available for whatever... showers happened using a 2 gallon pressure sprayer, replaced the hose with a camp shower sprayer. It meant taking sailor showers.
Sounds like a challenging but rewarding life. I hope it created a lot of long lasting memories 🙂
It is really encouraging to see you guys living out your dreams. Having strived for bigger better, more you get to a point in your life when time is more important than money. In reality these things are all superfluous as what really counts is the memories you make along the way. At 60, I’d wish I’d realised this sooner!
I’m from Cumbria, but live in Berlin. It’s God’s own country and I miss it terribly. I take my hat off to the two of you and look forward to seeing how things go.
Me too, Staveley.
You're a beautiful couple and I truly admire your life choices and lifestyle. Your cottage seems idyllic but I've now watched two videos and know that it can be freezing and too attractive to mice, but STILL your enthusiasm and energy is wonderful to watch.😄
I've subscribed and will be following your journey with real interest. At 73 yrs old I'm never going to be living like this but to see you two living, loving and sharing is a real treat for me. It is something I would have loved to have done, with the right person. Thank you for sharing your story.❤
Ha, yes, the warmth makes it more appealing to everybody! Thanks so much for following our journey and we're really happy to be sharing it with you :)

Your journey and your love for each, the countryside and Cumbria is truly beautiful. I love watching you both as you talk so honesty about how you deal with the reality of living in the countryside in a beautiful old cottage. I have ties with Cumbria and a wonderful cottage too so I really empathise with you both! What I love most of all is your positive outlook in spite of the weather, power cuts, Internet issues and all the challenges of living remotely car less. You are a joy to watch amongst this magnificent scenery. Thank you both for cheering me up whilst I recover from CV-19. Cant wai for more! Hope you both settle there! Wonderful ❤❤
Thank
@@joshandsarahride Do you have cell service? 4g works great with a dedicated modem if you do. I have better cell service than when I was in the metropolis lol. I had better service than many people with phone ADSL, which can be real bad. (Have fibre now)
@jennygough8580 thank you so much! Really glad you liked the video. They're are some hardships to the winter but also a lot of beauty and we really love to explore on the bikes. What is your connection to Cumbria? Hope you recover soon, sending well wishes
We live fairly remote, a forested area in Finland. It's approximately a 30 minute drive to the nearest shop and a 2 kilometre drive along the forest track to the main road.
Summer is our shortest season, which isn't so bad when you consider almost all the tiny airborne insects want to bite, burn or sting you.
Winter, however, is our longest season and the deep snow affords a feeling of absolute isolation from the rest of the tumultuous world. It's a unique experience I wouldn't trade for all the tea in China. The scenery is spectacular.
It's a gift for the dogs too. So much freedom for them to run around and just be dogs.
I do not miss the hustle and bustle of the conctete jungle at all.
Right then. As you've inspired me to do some work, I'm off to stack some chopped wood before the heavy snows start to fall.
Peace ✌
That sounds incredible! I have always wanted to experience the long winters to see what it's like. This is a baby version 😅 summer is great but I (sarah) get devoured by bugs which is a real bummer when I want to garden. Good luck with the wood chop.
Wow that sounds wonderful. How much daylight do you get in winter?
@@jillchew-tetlaw3388 The winter darkness is known as 'Kaamos' or polar night, a duration of approximately 3 months. You don't really see the sun during this period and any available ligh that does exist, exists around 10:00 am to 2:00pm and is the equivalent of twilight.
The loss of daylight hours is compensated for during the short summer months when the sun is still shining at midnight.
Either side of the two extremes, you tend to lose track of time.
Your a credit to your generation, it’s easy to live in this now world that’s been created. Well done!
Fantastic video guys. My wife and I have both recently turned 60 and enjoy the comforts of our caravan in Pooley Bridge, but we're both a bit envious seeing you with your whole lives ahead of you, having such a great adventure with the most basic stuff. Looking forward to seeing your story unfold. Best of luck to you both.
Your definition of freezing is quite charming. Here in Canada where I live, that's a warm day. Anyways, love your life and the videos are wonderful. All the best~K
I’m from Canada and I spent one winter living in the Lake District. Although it was stunningly beautiful I would take our cold Canadian winters over the endless grey days.
Ah there are some bright and beautiful days too but it also can be very overcast. It must be chilly in Canada over winter🥶
Keep your lentils and all other dry goods in tins. Old biscuit tins, tin tea caddie etc it jars with tight fitting lids. Keep the damp and the mice out lol xxx
I grew up on an island in the middle of the North Sea in Scotland - Shetland. I couldn’t live anywhere but rural. Cities wear me down (endured it for uni, but hated every moment). Give me gales and snow outside while the fire is on inside 👌🏽I stay in Kintyre in Argyll now, which is just as wild at times.
Would love to visit the Shetland islands, they look amazing! Sounds like you've lived/live in some beautiful places
What a lovely place and video! We live on the top of a mountain in a off grid cabin in norway. 500 meters above civilization up a 25 minute winding sketchy road. -20 degrees in the winter and 2 meters of snow. I have never been so happy!
Wow, Offgrid in Norway sounds amazing!
Myself (67) and my dsughter (49) had a house built in the forest of Newfoundland last year. This will be our second winter and we just had the first snow. We have hydro but its greatly expensive so we heat with a wood stove and only use it for back up. Getting the grounds ready for veggies in the spring. A green house to build and an orchard to start. It's very hard work but its so very very rewarding. Cheers to all and may The Great Spirit guide our journeys in joy and peace. 💞🙏
Sounds like you have created a beautiful home for you both. I hope you enjoy the snow and that you have a good harvest come summer. All the best🌱
@@joshandsarahride yes, it's a dream, 🥰 thank you. 💞
So many videos like this end up leaving a bad taste in your mouth because it's that saccharin sweet Disneyfied perspective but you have given a wonderful insight into the hard work required and the amazing payoff from it. Well done for making it work for you both.
Thank you so much! So glad you like the videos, we're really passionate about them and the storytelling aspect. Thanks 🙂
I trust that you have accepted that country life and country people will not have the same values, outlook and ideologies that those you left in the town did. The Lake District is a huge tourist area, but it is still an agricultural and rural environment, so moving there must include understanding and acceptance of such. I wish you all the best in your new life. Um, by the way, we always used to wear slippers or shoes (some of us still do!), it’s a modern centrally heated idiosyncrasy that decided no footwear was the thing! A thick jumper, warm socks and a vest is the best central heating. I’m enjoying your journey 👍.
Yes I think that's one of the great things above moving here is learning and embracing a new culture. Yes we're both very accustomed to slippers and warm layers. Also a hit water bottle is great company too
Thank you!
Great vid guys. I live in a remote part of the Lakes in a forresters cottage. I have a car, which is a god send. I wouldn't live anywhere else. love the pitch blackness at night, the silence( apart from the owls) and solitude. If your wood burner is multifuel, get some coal delivered. Burns longer, could keep it in all night, great in the depths of winter. Such positive attitudes from young lovely people x
Thanks for the tip! Yes the owls can be surprisingly loud 😅
Keep the videos coming, love seeing how your getting on xxx
I watched this and subscribed. I admire you both for the leap. I think it's incredible that you've both found eachother and done this together.
I love the idea of being this remote....getting away from society and getting more in touch with the outside world.
I'm 44 now but wish I'd met someone to do this with!
Enjoy the journey!
I think if you really want something in life you should try to make it happen. Who knows what thr future holds. It was a leap but one we fully leant into which I think helped, especially moving at the beginning of winter. Really glad you liked the video 🙂
There's still time @markrowley9801
We chose a life like this , it was pretty rough in the winter 🥶 but it really brought us all closer together
@@Angiebeau that is very true.
How about you? Have you considered the same?
Well done,we did this in the early 1970s and are now in our 70s. Enjoy every day even the cold ones. Best piece of advice I was given was you never have enough firewood, time and again it was to prove to be good advice. We did not even have power for some years, made for happy memories. Good luck to the pair of you.
Sounds like a hard but rewarding life! Thank you, will be sure to remember this 🪵
You two have won the lottery of life! Thank you for sharing your beautiful story/home/adventures xx
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful adventures. I’m so happy for you!
Hey, it's Lewis from Cambridge, from the days of Stem & Gory. I've been following you two a little on and off, and honestly this is one of the most beautiful and joyful videos I've watched. I'm so jealous and absolutely inspired by you both. Thank you for putting this stuff out there for us x
Hey Lewis! Nice to hear from you! How's everything going? Are you still around Cambs? Really glad you enjoyed the video. Such an incredible little place we've found so I hope we do it justice. Spring is even better!
So enjoyed watching you two lovely people you are young you will cope those hills crikey how fit you must be x
I used to live in a listed cottage and the winters were borderline unbearable unless we could afford to have the heating on 24/7 (which we obviously couldn’t). The sopping wet single glazed windows were one of the worst things!
I can relate! The windows look this it's been raining inside 🌧😅
@@joshandsarahrideI’ve heard dehumidifiers can help with condensation and making it cheaper to heat!
@@swimminginhoney yes, we have used one before but haven't found them to make a huge difference unfortunately
I really enjoyed this...thankyou! I am inspired. ❤🙂 🐏🐑🐑🐑🐑
Amazing! I love the Lake District, I live about a 2 hour drive from there and love visiting, so brave going remote but it’s beautiful!
A lovely video. I would have loved to see the interior of their home! ❤
You can't beat living out in the country. I get woken up by Owls hooting at each other. Not car alarms going off.
You two are a lovely couple and I’ve enjoyed each and every one of your videos.
I sincerely hope this works out as I’m sure it will 🙏👍
Haha, we get along alright... 😅 thanks for all the support Tony!
You definitely have to be more resilient to live a rural lifestyle away from amenities, and where you have to do things for yourself - like chop and carry wood, grow your own food, etc. I live in an uninsulated cabin (wood floor, not stone thank goodness!) with no running water or indoor plumbing, but I have electricity, decent internet and an outhouse. (Peat moss is the key to no odours!) I'm in Canada so the winter is likely colder than yours, and summer hotter. One learns so much from living like this. I recognize how much of the planet's resources we use up just in daily life. I do have a car, and have to drive 50 minutes to get groceries and supplies (no deliveries up here, and courier deliveries are sketchy), so I bunch my errands together. Much as I, too, love to cycle, I am also on the side of a mountain and it would be all uphill or downhill! (It's a popular area for cycling groups.) I also do have great neighbours close by, and we help each other out in every way we can. That aspect of life is often lost in more urban environments where people can be more self-sufficient. I have a small vegetable garden which is great for fresh produce. We had frequent power cuts in the last year so I bought a small Jackery portable power station that can be recharged either via solar panels or from a home electrical outlet. It holds its charge for a year! It was pretty exciting to pull it out the first time we had a power cut! It ensures that I have phone and internet service (my phone calls have to be via Wifi). Being in my late 60s it's helps me feel a little more connected in an emergency. May you continue to love life in the cottage!
Fabulous.
Wow sounds like an incredible life. I agree that you have to be a bit more resilient for this type of life. Also proactive and patient. Sometimes you have to do jobs when they arise so things don't get worse. Plus, when you're at the mercy of the elements and nature you have to learn patience. Canada is somewhere we've always wanted to visit, it looks so beautiful. Thankfully we can get deliveries here. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live here without driving. I agree that this sort of living gives you more sense of community with your neighbours that you miss in a city. I can't see us ever moving back. How long have you lived in your cabin for?
You are a wonderful couple! Said me, retired guy livin "alone" with a pack of eight dogs in the west country side of France, and who loves to cycle, though a have a car for the pets!
Thank you 🙂 ah wow your tribe sounds amazing 🐾 happy cycling 🚲
Bit late to the party with this video but it came up as a suggestion on my CZcams just today. You are basically living in an area and cottage that my husband and I would love to live in. Now I'm really looking forward to watching your subsequent videos to see how things turn out for you. 😊

I live in a small village on the fringe of the Lake District, and we generally get a couple of power cuts a year. Sometimes the power is off for minutes, other times it can be hours. The water goes off about once a year on average....
Does make it nice and atmospheric! Also have rubbish internet?

@@Chief_Brody strange for someone to spend their time commenting negative things to strangers on the internet. Guess we all have our thing
We used to live in a remote cabin when I was a kid, had a cow, some chickens and pigs, grew wegetables and were mostly self sustaining. I can't stress enough how much I miss it, living in a city myself now that I am in my 30s. I do hope that one day I will be able to afford to get myself away from the stress which comes with living in a big city and purchase a remote cabin for myself somewhere in Highlands.
Sounds like a beautiful upbringing. I hope you ate able to live our your dreams and find a place in the Highlands, a beautiful part of the world 🌎
