  • Hasbro owns the rights to the Transformers brand, but they don’t own the rights to the concept of a transforming toy. Today we’re going to talk about well known companies that tried to make their own transforming toys, and if those toys worked or not. From Marvel to Digimon to Jurassic World, many have tried to mimic Hasbro’s success.

Hey, LISTEN! I have a transformers podcast now!
It's the Back Kibble Podcast, a completely normal Transformers podcast hosted by dumbjake, TFanPage101, and PerspectiveEnd
New episodes will be uploaded to the dedicated channel starting on 7/4 BUT we uploaded a special "episode zero" just because we're so excited and wanted to show you what we've been up to!

I find the concept of the Marvel MegaMorphs toyline to be hilarious. Like, The Avengers created giant transforming mechs to take out that one small guy, and that's overkilling it.

Since you mentioned Bandai, a lot of gunpla have transforming features despite being model kits and not toys per se.
It’s impressive how well they work since it’s all plastic on plastic. No screws or hinges to hold anything place. No glue either. Granted they don’t always look the best (looking at the HG Wing Zero).
The MG Zeta Gundam Ver. Ka is a technological marvel.

  • @primalconvoy
    @primalconvoy Před 4 měsíci +38

    You could also include:
    - Bandai egg beasts (skeleton dinosaurs, Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, etc).
    - Ghostbusters transforming figures (Toilet, scooter, etc turn into ghost monsters).
    - Heman rocklord things (can't remember the name).
    - Matchbox cars that turned into alien robot things (you opened the cars and pulled out the compressed "robot" and transformed it, etc.
    - Some other Hotwheels-sized cars that turned into robots/animals (can't remember the names).
    - Gobots, Rocklords (and all the other tf robot toys that came out in parallel to TFs).
    - Werebears (cuddly teddybears that turned into monster bears by turning their faces and paws inside-out).
    - TMNT transforming action figures (Leonardo turned into a fire engine, I think?)
    - Dinosaurez (or something like that) by Bandai. Metallic dinosaur and prehistoric mammal fossils turned into robots. The main bad guy was called something like "Gigano Dragon" and turned into a silver oriental dragon.
    - Happy Meal transformers (the ones that turned from food and drink into robots) - The precursors to the infamous "Botbots".

The digivolving toys were my favorite toys as a kid. Season 2's toys were lacking to me but I loved season 1 and 3's toys. The digivolving playsets were cool too (evolved from one form to another, but also opened up to reveal a whole diorama inside of them with minifigs). I had all 3 of the season 3 digivolving playsets. I loved the digivolving toys so much that I ended up getting every single one of the rebooted Digivolving Spirits figures, even the blackwargreymon recolor lol. It's an absolute Travesty that they cancelled the new digivolving spirits line though.
They had Gomamon>Zudomon, Palmon>Lillymon, Biyomon>Garudamon, Guilmon>Dukemon, and Impmon>Beelzemon figures in the works, but all were cancelled. They even showed prototypes of both Biyomon and Guilmon at toy shows, they looked so good, but never released. Hope to god they revive the line one day.

As someone who's gotten a lot of the beastbox cubes, complete recommendation there. They're a little pricy for the size, but they make up for it with quality engineering and plastic. They're pretty dense and well made. The four monkey combiner is pretty baller. Also recommend the japanese crane, the ankylosaurus, archeopteryx, crab, and angler fish. The dogs are good, just a little complicated.

Sometime in the 2000s, Bandai released a Zaku II figure that transformed into a Magellan Tank. Dunno if the line went beyond that, but it's neat to see something from Gundam that isn't supposed to be a transformer at all turn into something that is completely unrelated, and have both modes end up looking good. 2Old4Toys made a video on it like 15 years ago, and that's the only reason I know of it's existence.

Interesting

I remember a long time ago getting some of the form-changing robot McDonald's toys, I had the Big Mac and the fries.
Those Jurassic Park egg dinos reminded me of the Rock Lords, a GoBots spin-off whose animated movie was released around the same time as The Transformers The Movie in the 80s. Robots that turned into rocks. Just what kids want, the ability to play with rocks. And parents have to buy expensive rocks.

I think multiple toys that transform into essentially the same thing but in radical different ways for one form, like with beastbox, is an interesting idea. Takara does something vaguely similar with the shinkalion toys since they're all bullet trains iirc but they're a lot more similar to eachother than they could be. The toys for super sentai series Zyuohger also flirted with the box mode thing in a more simple fashion as well.

You got a few dates mixed up. The Transformers Crossovers stuff mentionned early on was late 2000s (starting 2008) not early 2000s, and Hasbro snagging the Marvel license from Toy Biz was mid 2000s (iirc the Spider-Man 3 toyline was one of their first things released alongside continuing the Marvel Legends line).

Awesome vid! I've been curious about that T-Rex Jeep for a while so seeing you cover it made me wanna watch. I love "alternative" Transformers. They're not all great but some are really fun. I just ordered the big Gotham City Guardian off of Amazon for only 35 bucks, and given it was the flagship 100 dollar Christmas toy for 2023, I'd say that's a decent deal. I got a bunch of the star wars transformers, both the older and newer waves. I think of the 3 old ones (vader/tie advanced, obiwan/jedi interceptor, anakin/ jedi interceptor) i think both interceptors are broken in some way. Of the way smaller newer ones I gave like 4 or 5 and like them more than the old ones because they're less unweildy and while looking worse they cover more characters
Would love to see you you talk about them
