    If you added live or pre-conditioned coral based rock to that jar, it was already cycling the moment and before you put sterile water in. And given the small volume, I would think it would start cycling fairly quickly UNLESS there’s a subsequent die off in the mean time of whatever was riding along with that rock. As for the ammonia test, you could have added a drop of your ammonia chloride to a known quantity of water and then tested that first to see if the test kit would give an ammonia reading.... there is some benefit to adding some sort of nutrient to the tank to aid the cycle as that represents the additional bio load you are about to add with livestock.
    P.S. Great video, and great series... I’m just going to get back into the hobby with a pico after being out of the reef hobby for at least 20 years now... being one who originally learned a lot from Julian Sprung and built EVERYTHING from scratch including a huge sump and massive protein skimmer on a 15 gallon tall reef tank lit by fluorescents and actinic. Unfortunately a move (and an epic battle with both a fireworm and a thumb splitter) made it impractical to continue - but I’ve always wanted to get my hands salty again.

    i have tried bottled bacteria before and added fish roughly 7 days later. I don't recall the brand I used though. I don't have any complaints from this method. Looking forward to seeing the full outcome!

    Short cycles do exist personally I believe a tank will recycle periodically early on if you add a large fish or many fish. The best thing to do post cycle is if you are skilled at catching them is a bunch of damsels for the 2nd cycle then pull them and you can add multiple nice fish right away. The other good option which I should have done but failed to do is add corals (LPS and softies) early on to beat out algae early and target feed them.

    If your ammonia test kit expired you cant tell if the cycle has even started buddy... i would put more ammonia daily and test the water in 5-7 days time

    Using a good piece of live rock is about the same as transferring over a used filter, it should have enough bacteria in it to be cycled just by using the rock.

    Thanks for doing this little series on Picos, I am planning on turning a rimless 5g into a reef tank. I will be running an aquaclear 70. That should be plenty of filtration and water movement to where I wouldn't need a wave maker I think. Or should I omit the aquaclear and go filterless like you have? This is my first venture into saltwater so I would appreciate your feed back. Thank you so much!

    • @MadHattersReef
      @MadHattersReef  Před 4 lety +1

      I think a 70 aquaclear would be enough flow for a 5g. IR had a 10g with a 70 and that was it. Should work fine.

    Hey Mad Hatter! - Thanks for the informative videos! - I wanted to ask, I have the 13.5 fluval and am going to use Dr. Tims... I haven't put my biological media and chemipure blue in yet... should I put the one and only in and the ammonium chloride in, let it go for 24 hours then put my media in and turn back on the pump? or just put all my media in at the same time I use the dr tims? with the filter going? First time using the product. Thanks for any guidance!

    Is it the nitrifying bacteria masking the ammonia and nitrite maybe?? i know the bottle says use to lower levels of ammonia and nitrite so could just not be getting a reading from that. Hopefully its cycled thought thanks for the videos and info.

      @@MadHattersReef even better, thanks for your insight in all this this is all very helpful. If your replying i have a question. I have one piece live rock left in a quarantine tank im too scared to introduce its beautiful and coraline all over the one side but the back side and bottom are covered in the multiple hundreds of spirorbid worms im not over exaggerating either. Im not sure if this will be kinda stupid to introduce into my tank im worried my whole tank will look like the rock.

    Quick ? I'm getting ready ready to make the switch from freshwater to my first reef tank. It's a 60 gallon cube and I'm going to use half live rock half dry. Do I still need to use the additives. I'm use to always having media in one of my sumps ready to go. Will the live rock perform the same way. Thanks

    • @MadHattersReef
      @MadHattersReef  Před 4 lety +1

      The live rock will help but I would still use the process I did here to make sure that the cycle happens. I like the fact you are using live rock with the dry, if will definitely help.

    Fish added with Bio-Spira in first day of 5.5 Pico tank.

    • @lowellbentley
      @lowellbentley Před 2 lety

      BIO-Spira actually contains two types of bacteria. One type breaks down ammonia, which is the very toxic part of fish waste, into nitrites. Another type of bacteria breaks the nitrites down into nitrates which are still toxic but not as much as nitrites or ammonia. In a new tank, ammonia can reach a dangerous level within days after introducing the fish. This is why, before BIO-Spira, only a small amount of fish could be added at first, and then no more fish could be added for three to four weeks. Aquarium owners had to be patient people! But with BIO-Spira, time is not a problem as this product’s bacteria will break down ammonia (and the nitrites produced from this) within twenty four hours. No more waiting!

    If you add a fish along with the bottle of nitrifying bacteria, how is it cruel to the fish if the bacteria immediately starts consuming the ammonia the fish produces? Wouldn't that be enough to keep the ammonia in the tank at safe levels for a fish when cycling?

  • @SirPaulB
    @SirPaulB Před 4 lety +1

    If this tonga branch live rock was taken out of mature tank you have instant cycle in pico without a doubt

    • @MrSnuggs
      @MrSnuggs Před 4 lety

      Yeah and I would think since it's used to the mature tank there would even be significant bb die off since the bio load shrunk ! Then again so did the water volume 🤔

    adding live rock at the same time with bacteria, not very replicable with other new comers of the hobby, particularly with no testing on ammonia. I highly doubt any other people do exactly the same process with dry rock will have the same success. overall, not the best guide nor scientific process educated for new hobbiests
