Bill Gates Is Backing The Waterless Toilet Of The Future

- In developing countries, access to public utilities like running water and sewer systems are often not available. The lack of those resources leads to unsanitary conditions that can put people's lives at risk. Researchers at Cranfield University hope to put an end to that with the waterless Nano Membrane Toilet. The design has so much potential to change lives that it's been backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Who knows
You'd have to stand up every few liters you shit out and wait till it turns back up.

When are waterless showers coming?
C001 DUDE impossible
They are close .. ;) They have showers that recycle the water over and over so you only use a gallon or two. Saves on heating water too.... google it.
cgishack yeah I know those, they are in space shuttles and the ISS

Nikola Tesla's cold fire is sort of like a waterless shower.
There should be a way to use the solid waste as fertilizer as well after it's been process for safety reasons.

I don't think a family that can't afford water, will be able to afford this.
Just a thought but maybe Bill Gates plans on donating these to poor places. Crazy, I know.
Owl Capone That'll be a miracle
It isn't about not being able to afford it, it's about stopping contamination, and not wasting the precious clean water they do have where they are gonna shit and piss in. use ya brain boi.
Vnifit Doesn't change the fact it cost to manufacture and these areas won't be able to afford these toilets unless they're donated. Also if most of these areas don't even have running water why the hell would they have electricity to run them even if they're donated. So this will sadly solve nothing.
The burning part I agree is a bit far fetched, however it is a concept design, not a final design. It's possible they might use propane/kerosene/gasoline however I would agree that the people who would use this would likely not have access to these fuels and another expense for them is not something they could afford. But I would like to add that plastic is very cheap. Especially when made in bulk, you could easily manufacture these for less than 5 USD, which would add up, it would also increase quality of life and health and safety standards, possibly making return on investment. This things--other than the heating chamber--would be completely electricity free. As you can see in the video, it is all moved by gears when you lift or close the lid.
When do we have waterless sinks?
When will we have waterless water?
When will we have waterless water bottles?
When will we have waterless?
But what if you're still trying to shit and the lid closes
Force it open

I really really hope those toilets are gonna be a normal thing in the close future.
and hopefully the engineers who designed them have build them rock solid and lasting, if one get's broken, it is going be a pain in the ass to repair it, not mentioning the costs of doing it or even buying another one.
luks very expensive
Well it is basically a bunch of gears and containers wit a few filters and such. It would be kind of like a more high tech version of geared toys like fake clocks and such. I would think the price is around a water filtration pitcher and several geared toys put together so it would not be surprising if it was around $40 at most.
Kids in Africa can eat this toilet.
I'm from Africa and I'm offended
one step closer to the 3 sea shells.
Need this in my bedroom. I will cut a hole on my mattress and I won't ever have to get up
It should bury the waste not burn it, that's good soil for the Earth.
Angel Ramirez ash is also good for soil too
Tbh I do not think I might like this toilet
Once the bowl returns to its normal position, will it be clean or do you have to clean the bowl after every #2?
You need to constantly use chemicals or water to clean.
So the toilet requires no water, but it either requires a ton of electricity or gas to burn the waste. Silly idea in my opinion. At first I thought it's a toilet where you poop in a "bag" that gets sealed and a new "bag" automatically opens up for next use.
In undeveloped areas it can be easier to get electricity into a home than to get running water into a home.
What about toilet paper?
MildManNerd Throw it into the thrash bin?
It will get burnt, too.
what about diarrhoea

M Hilmy Fauzi usually most of the places where water is in abundance has electricity, alternate is solar or wind but wud take lot of energy to keep up with a coil

raptor t don't forget the fuel probably kerosene
oh yeah kerosene i forgot about that
At what degrees do I have to set my oven to bake it?
Looks expensive.
I have an idea. Dig holes and close em. Good for the soil, you will save money.
how does one clean the toilet bowl if there's no flushing of water ?

it wont become waterless if i pee in it
Going to the bathroom had never been more high-tech? Well just check Japan!
So... You need to empty the ash, empty the water tank, and replace the filters.. and power/ replace whatever powers the furnace to burn the crap. umm how is that better than a water pipe hook up?? LOL
It May be an inconvenience, but this means saving water which, if u didn't know, it is vital for the planet...and if u did not consider anyone but yourself, it is also water you need. Even though I do not think this system works, we should all support the idea of a waterless system.
This IS super awesome...however composting toilets are also waterless, a helluva lot cheaper, and can also contribute to soil enrichment after the compost is left out for one year, it becomes rich dirt full of worms good for gardening. You could use this ash to amend the soil too, but a whole trash bin full of soil is probably more nutrient rich.
This....seems a little convoluted and expensive..
Why substitute water for either electricity or some form of fuel? How does this not just take one issue and replace it with another? Water access is a problem, so replace it with a grid system or solar and ion batteries or a tank of gas?..
Plenty of compost toilets exist right now... no moving parts, no complexity....just a waterless toilet and waste storage tanks --one with composting material in the bottom...
Not a difficult thing to build or maintain... why fund research for the feasibility of this when you can just make 40,000 compost toilets right now?... This seems almost like another fake kickstarter where the product is overly complicated and can't meet the expectations...
fux yews Imagine a huge apartments building, like the anonymous towers in Asia where you have just a few square meters to cram your belongings. Try to fit compost toilets in that lifestyle, which is the millions of people around the world from Russia to Santiago de Chile. Imagine compost toilets in offices, schools, working places. Where do we put all the compost?
I would love to have a compost toilet, and am totally aware of their usefulness since I have an orchard garden, but it is so small that I myself couldn't deal with all the compost.
This is one of (hopefully) many solutions for a complex problem, apt for urban lifestyle in crowded places.
María Martínez you lady are highly ignorant. Russia is not a third world country. We have running water and toilets. Same goes with Chile. Educate yourself...
In the future, i dont want to drink a filtered poop to become a water.
I grinch when they were explaining the wet poop liquid can be filters and stored, and sigh of relief when i found out its not for drinking hahaha

BIDETS ARE AWESOME!!
@@Iavenderhazes bidets are ment to use water to clean your butt to try and stop the amount of toilet paper used

Doesn't require water but requires fuel to burn your shit to ash
In the 90's kids used to say "there will be flying cars and trips to moon in 2000's" and we in the 2000s are making toilets
I have a similar invention that involves the use of a cannon to shoot your toilet clean at some neighbours you dont like. Its waterless and you can use cans of hairspray or gunpowder to get the cleaning system initialized.
Does diahreah mix in with the filtered pee water too?
solid waste isnt always solid. its gunna get all over the first flap
billy fakersonton Exactly, and when it's not in water it gets stuck to stuff pretty easily so that corkscrew will get jammed up really quickly with dry shit and block the whole thing up.
Awesome idea!!Albeit,i believe they should review the part where the waste is disposed off..i'm quite skeptical hygiene wise.
Seems very complicated. Composting toilets as used by many in tiny houses seem like they would be more practical.
Will this toilet solve floaty poop?
I get the idea of the toilet but this isn't practical at all. 3rd world countries with no running water are not going to be wanting to use what little electricity they have on a go go gadget toilet, they will just take a shit outside. Plus heating up shit into ash will most likely release the most ungodly smell, not to mention the amount of moving parts and things that can go wrong with the toilet will require an entire maintenance staff on duty at every household.
Maybe they are designed to be as easy to maintain as possible, where the local populace will be trained on how to maintain them. Besides lots of poor regions have communal toilets, so it's not like every household needs them. And the smell from burning isn't any worse than it's now, because people are leaving shit out in the open. Also burning shit isn't probably that energy intensive.
Answer me this why are people leaving shit out in the open rather than burying it under a few inches of soil? What is stopping these communities from just pooping in community outhouses that are a deep ditch where poop can be easily buried? And also what 3rd world man would use electricity on burning his poop in opposition to using light bulbs in his home or even using electricity to heat food instead?
"Plus heating up shit into ash will most likely release the most ungodly smell" Did you really think they won't consider that when building this?
Which fuel will be used to burn it? Fuel is costlier than water.
What about maintenance cost?
What do you do on the filter in membranes are used up And you forgot to change them
Shiiit, I don't want some fire to burn my toilet
Bill Gates.... No... just no. 😷
Why can’t there be a way for the waste water byproduct the be rerouted back into the bowl while it flushes for a small amount of filtered waste water to avoid stains etc.
‘’Going to the bathroom never been high tech”
Me:bruh
I saw the poop.. 💩
and it opened up my eyes, I saw the poop...💩
Thank for point that. 😋
It have Microsoft on it 10/10
How do you clean it after uses? What happens to the burning gas of feces? Does is require electricity? How much gas does it take to burn? and how long will it last?
I just wanna know how long it takes to flush, is there a one minute wait before you can use the toilet again?
Won't be waterless for long
Awesome design, though I think the waste could be put to better use in a composting system. In a controlled system you could bake off pathogens to make it safe for plants, and possibly capture hydrocarbons produced in the settling bowl.
Separating the solids out may make it possible to vacuum transport them to a localized compost facility, making it possible to scale up.
Also, run (or aerosolize) the water over oyster mushrooms grown on wood chips to clean it further. The proper combination of plants may make the filters unnecessary (and cheaper)
All they need is to go feom shitting where they live and drink to not shitting there so they dont die. Why are poor countries now recycling shit at an enormous price? Pointless.
"The family empties the waste trank once a week" I only take one shit a week lol
