  • In developing countries, access to public utilities like running water and sewer systems are often not available. The lack of those resources leads to unsanitary conditions that can put people's lives at risk. Researchers at Cranfield University hope to put an end to that with the waterless Nano Membrane Toilet. The design has so much potential to change lives that it's been backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Also if most of these areas don't even have running water why the hell would they have electricity to run them even if they're donated. So this will sadly solve nothing.

    • @Vnifit
      @Vnifit Před 7 lety +2

      The burning part I agree is a bit far fetched, however it is a concept design, not a final design. It's possible they might use propane/kerosene/gasoline however I would agree that the people who would use this would likely not have access to these fuels and another expense for them is not something they could afford. But I would like to add that plastic is very cheap. Especially when made in bulk, you could easily manufacture these for less than 5 USD, which would add up, it would also increase quality of life and health and safety standards, possibly making return on investment. This things--other than the heating chamber--would be completely electricity free. As you can see in the video, it is all moved by gears when you lift or close the lid.

      It May be an inconvenience, but this means saving water which, if u didn't know, it is vital for the planet...and if u did not consider anyone but yourself, it is also water you need. Even though I do not think this system works, we should all support the idea of a waterless system.

  • @bodybalancer
    @bodybalancer Před 7 lety +6

    This IS super awesome...however composting toilets are also waterless, a helluva lot cheaper, and can also contribute to soil enrichment after the compost is left out for one year, it becomes rich dirt full of worms good for gardening. You could use this ash to amend the soil too, but a whole trash bin full of soil is probably more nutrient rich.

  • @fuxyews2177
    @fuxyews2177 Před 7 lety +31

    This....seems a little convoluted and expensive..
    Why substitute water for either electricity or some form of fuel? How does this not just take one issue and replace it with another? Water access is a problem, so replace it with a grid system or solar and ion batteries or a tank of gas?..
    Plenty of compost toilets exist right now... no moving parts, no complexity....just a waterless toilet and waste storage tanks --one with composting material in the bottom...
    Not a difficult thing to build or maintain... why fund research for the feasibility of this when you can just make 40,000 compost toilets right now?... This seems almost like another fake kickstarter where the product is overly complicated and can't meet the expectations...

      fux yews Imagine a huge apartments building, like the anonymous towers in Asia where you have just a few square meters to cram your belongings. Try to fit compost toilets in that lifestyle, which is the millions of people around the world from Russia to Santiago de Chile. Imagine compost toilets in offices, schools, working places. Where do we put all the compost?
      I would love to have a compost toilet, and am totally aware of their usefulness since I have an orchard garden, but it is so small that I myself couldn't deal with all the compost.
      This is one of (hopefully) many solutions for a complex problem, apt for urban lifestyle in crowded places.

    Will this toilet solve floaty poop?

  • @CuDylan
    @CuDylan Před 7 lety +4

    I get the idea of the toilet but this isn't practical at all. 3rd world countries with no running water are not going to be wanting to use what little electricity they have on a go go gadget toilet, they will just take a shit outside. Plus heating up shit into ash will most likely release the most ungodly smell, not to mention the amount of moving parts and things that can go wrong with the toilet will require an entire maintenance staff on duty at every household.

    • @prwninja
      @prwninja Před 7 lety

      Maybe they are designed to be as easy to maintain as possible, where the local populace will be trained on how to maintain them. Besides lots of poor regions have communal toilets, so it's not like every household needs them. And the smell from burning isn't any worse than it's now, because people are leaving shit out in the open. Also burning shit isn't probably that energy intensive.

    • @CuDylan
      @CuDylan Před 7 lety

      Answer me this why are people leaving shit out in the open rather than burying it under a few inches of soil? What is stopping these communities from just pooping in community outhouses that are a deep ditch where poop can be easily buried? And also what 3rd world man would use electricity on burning his poop in opposition to using light bulbs in his home or even using electricity to heat food instead?

    Awesome design, though I think the waste could be put to better use in a composting system. In a controlled system you could bake off pathogens to make it safe for plants, and possibly capture hydrocarbons produced in the settling bowl.
    Separating the solids out may make it possible to vacuum transport them to a localized compost facility, making it possible to scale up.
    Also, run (or aerosolize) the water over oyster mushrooms grown on wood chips to clean it further. The proper combination of plants may make the filters unnecessary (and cheaper)
