Wow just looking back at these photos and came across the photo of the shop on the corner of Lambert Road and Hopefield Road. This belonged to. My mum and dad Joan and Frank Smith in the seventies and early eighties. The shop had been an Evarads off-licence.
I really miss all the old shops like Lewis's, Woolworths, C&A, the original BHS. used to look forwards to their Christmas window displays,( well Lewis's and Woolworth's) they were great. Is it true that we also used to have a Co-op on High Street? Can't remember, and if there is any other shops please feel free to tell me. Was born in the 60's and my memory isn't that good.
I remember the old co-op on High Street, I remember it closing down to become part of The Shires Shopping Centre (which later changed it's name to The Highcross Shopping Centre) It's where Rackhams/House Of Fraser used to be until it closed and became various new shops.
That's weird I am born and bred Leicester, as are my family, my mum worked at the Electric Board on Charles St (I think) when she was about 16 or 17 and has she was born in 1948 that would make it the mid 60's, told me a story about elephants going past the window on the street could this be the same time as in your picture.
Could well be since making video i got the date wrong The Elephants parade down Charles Street from the railway station and then parade through the streets to Rushey Fields."This was Billy Smart's Circus and was the normal way of getting the animals from a railway station to where the circus was performing.the photo dates to 1965 three years after Belgrave station closed where the elephants normally got off the train.
I think it's crazy how people, due to lack of any common sense, want everywhere to be pedestrianised and then are stupid enough to whine about the lack of people using city centre shops... derrrrr

this city looks dead comparing to what it was
Wouldn't it be amazing to know who those people are at 0.51 Gallowtree Gate and where they are now?
Dead
*Hard to spot a white face in 2023 !*

Then it was great, all the places I worked at from the 60's on are now gone. It became a multicultural dump
Really interesting actually but REALLY SAD that 🇬🇧literally stole everything from India including majestic elephants 😢
Nonsense
