If I recall, during the Yuuzhan Vong war in Legends, they discovered a cloaked Golan II Defense Platform left at Bilbringi - most likely left behind by Grand Admiral Thrawn as part of some grand plan for the first Battle of Bilbringi.
You have to be impressed with that platform. It lasted something like 20 years with no maintenance, no refueling, no crew and was still combat capable and manageable with a crew smaller than 100. (what happened to that original crew, clone madness?)
@@KMCA779 Golan Arms produces the highest-quality products. I assumed droids kept it operational, and the crew just left the station without decloaking it for plot reasons.

I always assumed Golans had slow hyperdrives that were mothballed once they arrived to their assigned posts.
I always assumed they were assembled on site.
For their size, I'd say the same. Much like modern manufactured homes. Built then transported to their respective sites. Could even pull the hyperdrive for the next batch.
I kind of figured they'd have removable hyperdrive modules, so if you ever needed to move one you could have a hyperdrive brought in and attached, tow it out of the planet's gravity well, and send it on its way. That would allow for shipping the things without requiring the cost of a permanent hyperdrive, so Golan could just maintain 20 or 30 hyperdrive modules for rent.

Imagine a few of these things protected by shields generated from the surface like the second Death Star was. Between planetary shields, defense fleets, surface artillery and orbital platforms, it's no wonder the Emperor needed a superweapon before he could wrest total control from the Senate.
Could you cover the legacy era a bit more? I understand alot of people don't care for the legacy era and its lesser known but I always liked how far after it takes place from everything else in starwars.

I think the lack of interest is from how it basically made Anakin's sacrifice meaningless as the Sith eventually come back and resumed their neverending war with the Jedi.

I had/have the idea brewing in my head that after Anakin died the force slowly started to fade away with force-wielding individuals becoming rarer and rarer. With both the Jedi and Sith being left in the history books the New Republic and Imperial Remnant (or something like them) would continue the Jedi-Sith conflict in spirit and fight for thousands of years as the Jedi and Sith did.
That's just my thoughts on the matter tho.

I wonder if gravity well generators could improve Golan platforms, maybe able to drop ships outside of effective range from hyperspace.
Just like thawns strategy to use interdictes to get his ships right where he wants then, golans can do the same bringing to enemy right at them

@@anishbayya2275 Or in contrast, the Golan's gravity well emitters could be used to to counter Thrawn's strategy by forced the Star Destroyers out of Hyperspace in the wrong place, especially if they were stronger.
If they were dropped out of Hyperspace next to a friendly Star Destroyer, they could accidentally broadside one of their own thinking that it was the Golan they were supposed to be next to.
@@Fiber64 You wouldn't want to use the generators during normal traffic, only when you are under attack, or about to be attacked if you get an early warning about an attack from a listening post or an informant.
So long as the attacking fleet isn't larger than what the Golan platforms could handle, the idea would be to activate the generators once combat has been engaged to prevent additional fleet resources from reinforcing the initial attack.
Furthermore, preventing a fleet from performing hit and fade attacks would be advantageous, especially since the Rebel Alliance would know how effective those strategies had been up and till now.
@nilok7, that would be a good idea, but knowing thrawn, he would have other ideas on how to attack the golan, but if all of the sudden There were interdictors without thrawn knowing this, then what you just said summarized what would happen perfectly
I grew up with the original 80's series, on VHS no less. I also have the special editions too, needless to say I prefer the 80's overall. But I would definitely agree with some of the effects of the 90's special edition. And I'm going to say this just the vast majority of us would agree, Han shot first.
Same here. I was still pretty young when the special edition came out and I remember reading about the changes made in Star Wars Insider. Things like the better explosions and digitally added extra starfighters attacking the first Death Star really improved the quality of the movies without being distracting. Some of the added scenes didn't blend so well and were distracting, even back then. Nowadays, my wife and I made a game out of seeing if she can guess which scenes have been added by the difference in special effects used.
What would have happened if UNSC had defeated he covenant forces and captured the forerunner fleet in Halo Wars instead of destroying the ships?. #askeck
Doubt it would've made a difference. I got 2 theories.
1. Covenant come back with a larger force, decimate humanity before they can learn anything more
2. Humanity doesn't end up using the ships as they're unfamiliar with forerunner tech and it would take a long time to assimilate it with their own

I'm curious if a deathstar would be large enough to support some of these in orbit... could hold them with a few tractor beams if not. Maybe they could be set into recesses in the outer hull of a deathstar for hyperspace travel, then launched back out and held in orbit when entering combat.

Ray shields only block lasers while particle shields block physical objects and weapons such as missiles or starships. Scariff was probably particle shielded.

Oh man, I remember when the gold special editions came out. Those changes just blew my six-year-old mind. My uncle had pretty much raised me and my siblings on the original VHS set and seeing the updated versions were incredible. I'm on the cuts with newer stuff, I don't hate Hayden and I think it makes a little thematic sense since this was who Anakin was in his prime before he discarded his old name and before his got immolated, but the big no I can definitely do without.

I think that's because the Empire was the "police" of the galaxy. They had to be very mobile so they just used more star destroyers as alternatives.
Regarding the Ask Eck: Man I was so hyped to see each of the Star Wars SE movies in the theaters when they came out. I grew up with a mismatched set of 80s VHS runs of the OT, supplemented with a behind the scenes documentary on the special effects. I was like the only kid I knew at school that had seen the original ANH Jabba scene with the Scottish actor before it got put in the SE version.
as a kid I watched phantom menace like at least once a week and I had the original trilogy on DVD aswell and my dad told me about him going to see the movies in theaters so that's my nostalgia

I got my dad an old vhs set for his birthday of the original editions a while back. First time I saw the original mos eisley shot I had to do a double take. It was just so different from the scene I had seen a million times before.

As for Special editions, I think we are all going to like the version we grew up with. And I grew up with the same version you did. I almost always picked a Star Wars movie when my parents let me rent a movie. It makes me wonder why they didn't just buy the trilogy for so long, since I must have rented the movies at least 20 times each.

I'm not certain if someone else have said this before, but the Shield Gate that was used to defend Sacrif was known as a Golan M1385 as mentioned in The Rebel Files.
It's defenses were not was prominent as the dedicated defense platforms in this video, since the installation had only turbolasers. My speculation is opening and closing the shield access point likely draws lots of power, which is why there was an obvious escort of star destroyers stationed around the gate.

My first copy of Star Wars was recorded off CBC TV on VHS in the early 80's. My copy had short Canadian commercials stuck in between different scenes that still occasionally slip into my memory when re-watching new copies. Honestly, it's all apart of the nostalgia for me, especially since the recording was done off an antenna onto an old VHS. I would pause and slow trac that thing so much looking at explosions frame by frame, I wonder today if that VHS would even play on an old VCR. Was also a different time, when CBC could broadcast a movie that was fairly recent without a ton of issues.
#AskEck Have there been Jedi, outside video games, who primarily used force techniques as a weapon instead of lightsabers? We see dark siders do this, like Mother Talzan and also Sidious seems to prefer force powers to lightsabers, but I canât think of a Jedi who has done it to a large extent.

I used to play my own sort of table top game with starwars as a kid with my friends. We used Wookiepedia as a reference and my friends never understood why I wanted to own Golan Arms until I researched lvl 3 Golans and nobody could touch my planets.

Had a dream about a variant of these a while back. I called it the Golan-SL. Basically, it was a Golan III with a mini Death Star Super Laser. Probably wouldnât work, but it still seems more practical than a Death Star, and they could probably shew through fleets with ease

A Golan III and Validusia are pretty much all you need (correct me if I'm wrong) to defend a system from medium sized fleets in Thrawn's Revenge. I defended Sluis Van with just those against a New Republic fleet of two Home One type MC80s and a few smaller ships. The defenses annihilated the fleet, only missing one MC80 that escaped just in time, but was badly damaged.

I remember a note in the Thrawn trilogy where, I think it was Lando, a character talks about the timing of a pirate attack being done so that the defense stations aren't near the target. And a later book by Zahn has a mention about the Golan platforms (and now I can't be certain of the exact words since it has been a while since I read it) lazily circling the planet Muuninlist. So my impression is that the Golan stations would not be geo-synchronous and that is it possible for a fast & small force to reach a planet by flying past them, but that the main point of the stations would be to defend planets from major attacks and in that case they would likely be able to move to intercept enemy fleets. And of course if a Golan is placed to defend a space station (like an orbital dock or something) then you can just park it near that target, but planets being what we scientists call "large" it simply isn't worth it to try to dot the orbit with space stations. As for having a hyperdrive in a Golan... If the only time you plan to move it from one system to another is when it is delivered to the customer after being built, then having a hyperdrive attached permanently might not be worth it. Using a tug or even a detachable drive (if you have a company that produces these stations, you could make a dedicated "Golan-transporter" to move them to where they are needed) is going to save a lot of money and remove a part that would need more maintenance over the years while doing nothing. The later Golan's having hyperdrives might imply that either hyperdrives are so cheap that they can just stick one on a station or the tactics regarding the stations have changed and perhaps moving them between planets as needed (blurring the line between a ship and a space station) could be more common than before.

The thing with ship weapons in the Saga Edition Star Wars sourcebooks can be confusing at times - most capital ships are given half the weapons they were listed with in earlier sources (some conversions from earlier games forgot to do that because they either weren't told the reason why or they forgot).
The reason is that unlike the previous d20 Star Wars RPG, Saga Edition didn't use firing arcs. Instead the game designers worked on the assumption that a capital ship or large space station could bring a maximum of half its guns to bear on a single target, so that's what was listed in the ships' stats.
Having a hyperdrive of any sort would be a necessity since defense platforms would be more efficiently built at a fixed construction facility then moved to the planet or other location where the purchaser wants it. Then if the need for the defense platform goes away, it could be sold and the new owner could move it to where they want it. Since rapid deployment would not be necessary, unlike a battle ship, getting there is more important than getting there quickly.

My favorite large battle tactic in EAW is as the imperials to hold a interdiction cruiser until late fight and as the enemy begins to break drop it in behind my lines and hit the GWG at 2 seconds before hyperspace jump. It gives a lovely 8 seconds of cheap shots.

Just to say, one of the best changes is that the victory scene in a new hope originally had a lot of people replaced with cardboard statues, they changed it so it was all people and no cardboard statues.

Quite an interesting video about the Golan, it's just a shame you can't capture them in Thrawn's Revenge.
In the remastered version of RotJ, I found the new music inside Jabba's Palace is a little too much in my face for my liking. And 'nub nub' is such a sweet tune, it just fits the scene of the Ewoks celebrating their victory over the Empire with their new Rebel friends so we'll.
I grew up with the original VHS releases of Empire and Jedi, it's what I watched so many times in my childhood.
But I'll tell you one thing the Disney versions of the films miss: the 20th century fanfare. It's such a small thing that makes a big difference, the drum roll is an integral part of the Star Wars theme that everyone seems to ignore, but to me it never feels right without it.

It does have some tidbits that might interest you. Some things such as the nelvaanian race. The giant green battle platforms the separatists used, or more, like how the force works underwater like kit fisto demonstrated

I can appreciate alternate cuts, gods knows there are movies that I would kill for alternate edits of, e.g. a chronological captain marvel re-edit.
I vastly prefer when the original media is not screwed with after launch. I remember buying butterfly effect and the dvd ending was different to the one I saw in he cinema, thematic but irritating, thatâs amplified when the original cut is not so much as available as packaged in extras so the ONLY available option is a fan-edit based on a conglomeration of 5-6 different media sources (most other franchises could never build up the support to even get that level of professionalism put into a fan work).
8:14 I think the only reason why we don't see ships shooting further than line of sight in the movies is because it wouldn't look good on film. They actually do shoot really far. One time in the beginning of Empire strikes back with the ion cannon but other than that, you don't really see them shooting that far.
Obviously they can. 2 golans at opposite ends of a planet can defend it from 360°.
Official DVD versions (not 4k but it's the best you can get) of the theatrical versions were released in 2006, I think, but they didn't make a lot of copies so they can be hard to find. I haven't seen it but I hear they are the true original theatricals where A New Hope doesn't even say "Episode IV: A New Hope". My VHS copy of A New Hope I grew up with had the subtitle as in the 1979 theater rerelease.
Just got off a lucky defense of my dreadnought shipyard at yaga minor as the pentastar, no defending fleets, and I got attacked by 8 capital ships, managed to hold them off due to a 3rd party, sure wish I had those Golan 3s
I think I'd want a couple Lucrehulk battleships to defend my planet. Those things were nasty strong.
Before I saw an actual Image of a Golan Defense Platform I thought it was Spherical like a Deathstar but much,much smaller and just Turbolasers and Point Defense Weapons

These are probably the most (in terms of physics) the most realistic ships in all of Star Wars.

What if Golan defence platforms were used to defend Earth or Reach from a Covenant fleet instead of (or in addition to) Mac platforms?
Eck has to answer that.
We would have lost a lot sooner. Both times. Covenant shielding and armor is highly resistant to purely energy based weapons. The UNSCs only advantage is the sheer kinetic energy imparted to the shields and armor. Anything else is more easily absorbed and dissipated.
@@johnverick-smith9794 Then why is it easier to penetrate Elite's shield with energy weapons if they are so resistant to energy based weapons? Even the Jackel shields will overload with enough energy blasts, while being pratically impervious to UNSC small arms fire. Even the UNSC sniper rifle can't penetrate Jackal shielding. You're just wrong I'm afraid.
@@pedrokantor3997 He was talking about ship grade weaponry, the super MAC has enough kinetic energy to destroy all but the biggest ships in a single shot. The MAC would be more effective than turbolasers.

Because he was talking about the weapons they use in space which frankly operate at ridiculously faster velocities than any small arms ever could. That was the question. That's surprising that Golen defense platforms took form during the Clone Wars particularly the Golan 1 then Golan 2 & 3 used after the Battle of Endor in Legends.

I basically agree with you on the Special Editions. I grew up watching the theatricals on VHS (I was 13 when the Special Editions came out) and overall I liked the Special Editions but I didn't love every change. They screwed up Han shooting Greedo but I actually prefer "Yub Nub" over the Special Edition ROTJ ending music (the new visuals are nice, though). Other changes they made since 1997 I am also mixed on. Rerecording Boba Fett's voice bothered me, not that they did it but it sounds like they chose bad takes. I can't blame the actor as I've seen him act outside of Star Wars, he is capable. Having Boba sound like Jango makes sense but they at least could have done it well.

#AskEck Hey love the videos, here is my question. During the Battle of Felucia during the Clone Wars, we see it change hands throughout the three years of the war. Can you explain how and why this was such a huge slog other than the plants?
I actually have the OG Original ones in VHS. Where Han did shot first and where Jabba was a human stand in until Lucas thought of an actual creature. I don't have a VHS player nor do I want to actually play them in fear of damaging them. Not sure how much they are worth now.
The X-wing novel stats were different to what the video said. I remember Stackpole saying the G2s were the equivalent of an Impstar.
Re. Hyperdrives - I'd imagine that there was some kind of hyper-capable tug that would be able to attach to the station at some point to move it through hyperspace, similar to the hyperdrive rings that the Jedi starfighters would attach to in the Prequel era. Something like the Class Four container transports we saw in Rebels; attach a handful of those to various points on the station and hyper it to wherever it's going, then detach and use the ships for other duties.
I kind of hate the idea of a defensive fortification with a hyperdrive. History tells us that if you give something a capability, _somebody_ is going to make use of it. That's how you ended up with battlecruisers engaging dreadnoughts at the Battle of Jutland, resulting in the famous line "There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today" as battlecruiser #3 blew up. It doesn't make any sense to equip a vessel with a hyperdrive if it's never expected to need one, and it's just begging some bright spark of a CO to decide to "improvise" by going and attacking some pirates next door, leaving a critical system with a gap in its defences.
Why a Golan can be Sturdier than a Star Destroyer: The only Engines it has are those it needs to stay in Orbit. That's a whole lot of extra power for Shields and Weaponry compared to a Star Destroyer. Not needing to move allows for thicker Armor as well.
When i play Thrawn's Revenge, i just spam Golan III (i just built 3-4 Golan's to Coruscant lmao)
I built a golan 3 on bilbringi because it was my only shipyard planet.
If you put a small hyperdrive onto a Golan you have effectively created a Monitor Class vessel
#askeck which type of deflector shielding is a more effective form of protection: a bubble-like field thatâs constantly active or when the hull is struck, sensors in the armor trigger nearby generators that trigger a transient energy field localized in the area?
