Ed's best friend Jamal Edwards passed away in February 2022. This song is about Ed's sadness/depression (represented by the blue monster) always being present since it happened.

Ohhh I see that’s sad to hear I had no idea Jamal edwards and Ed Sheeran were best mates, I had no idea about the specifics of the song, so thank you for clarifying that. That makes a lot more sense with the blue monster as well

the blue creature represents his sorrow and sadness from the loss of dear friend jamal. it follows him around regardless what he does always lurking in the backround. i assume the title “eyes closed” means he doesnt want to face he sadness but in the end he ended up facing it…….
