- When we think of retirement, it often evokes dreams of leisure, relaxation, and the freedom to pursue one's passions. Yet, the decision to retire is not merely about leaving a career; it's about embarking on a new chapter filled with purpose and fulfillment. Joe Kuhn, a seasoned retiree and creator of the "Joe Kuhn Loves Retirement" CZcams channel, shares valuable insights gained from his personal journey.
Retiring to Something, Not Just From Something
Rather than focusing solely on leaving behind the stresses of work, Joe advocates for retiring to something meaningful. His emphasis on having specific plans, hobbies, and activities in retirement resonates with the idea that the transition isn't just a departure; it's an arrival into a new, purposeful phase of life.
Slow Travel and the Joy of Unplanned Adventures
James and Joe discuss the concept of "slow travel," an approach that involves savoring the journey rather than rushing to the destination. By embracing the beauty of unplanned adventures, he emphasizes that retirement opens up the possibility for individuals to explore at their own pace, fostering a deeper connection with the world around them.
Adaptability and Embracing Change
Joe shares the evolution of his retirement plans, demonstrating the importance of being open to change. Unforeseen events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, forced him to reevaluate his consulting work, inspiring his CZcams channel’s transformation into a retirement coaching platform. Joe's story underscores the resilience required in retirement, encouraging individuals to navigate the uncertainties with flexibility and a willingness to explore new paths.
Slowing Down and Recognizing Stress
Joe reflects on the shift from a high-stress, task-oriented mindset to a more relaxed and balanced lifestyle. The act of slowing down, evident even in routine tasks like mowing the lawn, becomes a metaphor for the broader shift in priorities during retirement. Joe's candid revelation about being unaware of the stress he carried during his working years prompts listeners to reconsider their own well-being and the impact of stress on health.
Spending Less and Financial Realities
Contrary to expectations, Joe reveals that he is spending significantly less than initially estimated. Adjustments in car usage, changes in insurance, and a transition to streaming services contribute to this surprising revelation. It is important to carefully assess finances and the need to adapt spending habits in retirement based on changing circumstances.
Confidence to Spend and Seeking Support
Joe addresses a common fear amongst retirees - the confidence to spend money. Despite having sufficient resources, many individuals hesitate due to economic uncertainties. Joe advocates for seeking support, such as from financial advisors, to gain confidence in financial decisions. Retirement is not just about financial planning; it's about developing the confidence to enjoy the fruits of one's labor.
Joe Kuhn's journey through retirement offers unique insights for those contemplating or navigating this significant life transition. From the importance of retiring to something meaningful to the adaptability required in the face of unforeseen challenges, Joe's experiences provide a roadmap for creating a fulfilling retirement anchored in purpose, flexibility, and financial mindfulness.

You two are directly responsible for helping me decide to retire. James: I learned how to calculate how much I need and figured out that I had enough to retire and not go broke. Joe: I never heard of NewRetirement until I watched your videos. With NR I have the confidence to know I can retire and I can tweak my financial plans and quickly see how they will affect me! THANK YOU BOTH! Paul in Hillsboro Oregon retiring April 5, 2024!!
So glad to hear that!
I'm at exactly the same point as you!! April 5, 2024. Laura from Richmond, VA. 128 days to go, but who's counting? 😂
Hey congratulations!
WOWWWWW Let's throw Azul in there with James and Joe for an hour discussion!! - Weekly CZcams show.
Brilliant!! Perfect trio!!
James i love your wholistic approach thanks for introducing us to Joe. After spending hours crunching numbers and learning about sequence of returns Joe has given a great perspective on the qualitative part of retiring. Best Peg from Alaska
🎉that would be awesome!
Thanks James for making this interview happen. It was fun.
Thanks for coming on the show Joe!
Nice collaboration from two guys that I watch each week! I enjoyed this and I know others will also. Great job!!!
Light bulb going off moment: Retire TO something not retire from something. Thank you gentlemen.
Great words from Joe!
Two of my favorite retirement CZcamsrs! Nice!
Thanks, Dan!
Great show! Two of my favorite retirement CZcams personalities!
Nightmares: My first year into retirement I had a job-nightmare every month. In it, I would be doing my job and messing it up. In my dream, I would say, “This is a big mess AND I am not even being paid for it anymore!” I retired at 72. I fell into the “just one more year” trap for a few years.
I drive a Honda Pilot with 255,000 miles on it. Retired at 54 also. Best thing you can do if financially able is to replace money with time. You can’t take it with you. I will turn 62 this year. Never did any work once retired. Did what I wanted - loving life. Never looked back.
James, you are a great interviewer. Thanks for this! Good job!
Thank you!
"Confidence to spend". Never a truer statement. Going from a saver all my life to becoming a spender is what I find most challenging.
My husband and I LOVE both of you. You both have been so encouraging and helpful on CZcams. Joe, you are INCREDIBLY blessed to have that retirement group. At this point, we don't have that. The friends we know who are retired do not have good financial sense, and we would not choose to confide in them or ask them for help. Maybe the Lord will provide that in the future. You two are the BEST out there on CZcams on the topic of retirement.
First days of retirement is like floating in zero gravity…so cool bouncing off the ceiling/walls…then you realize you’ld better tie yourself off to something(hobbies etc) or you’ll float away 😂 love both your channels, can’t get enough…thanks
Thanks for supporting our channels!
I watched way to many say one more year and stay too long. My coworker said one more year at 63 and never made it you never know how long you will have good health. I swore to not let that happen to me. I want to stop trading time for money so that’s exactly what I am doing. How many quality years from age 60 to age 80 🤔 I have had great bosses and for the most part enjoyed my job till this past few months. I knew it was time with a new boss, and I didn’t need to put up with anymore DEI corporate training etc.
My two favorites!
I'm 64 my experience and friends experience is things start breaking healthwise in 60's so retiring at 50 is a good move. There's a reason people retire at 65.
Great video! I recently retired age 56 and completely agree with the stress issue. Worked Union sheet metal mostly as an estimator and project manager. Great companies and really good job. BUT, after a few weeks or so into retirement I had no idea how stress was actually affecting me. Now I get better sleep, workout 2 hours a day and enjoy learning guitar. Looking forward to getting some vacation planned and spending more quality time with my wife
Wonderful
I'm getting ready to retire in a few months (career federal employee) and I have spent countless hours watching CZcams videos on early retirement. Your channels are two of my favorite CZcams subscriptions - I always learn something new or see/hear something thought provoking. Great interview! Thank you both for what you do to help other navigate the process of retirement planning and life after retirement!
I'm sick of spending the golden hours of the day sitting at my desk. When I see the sun shining on a glorious summer day, it kill me to be trapped inside. I think freedom is not too far off for me. I've got the money, now I just need the courage.
Great video by-the-way. I watch both you guys all the time.
Then don't
Facing the unknown can be scary, but your decision to retire at 54 and dive into reliability and maintenance consulting is awesome! Your idea of retiring to something, not just from something, totally clicked with me.
Great vlog with the two of you! I am 58 and will retire within the next 1-2 years. Getting all my ducks in a row, but know I need to do this and can do this and I have enough to do this.
You go this!
Both of the hosts are very wise and articulate. Good video!
At 57, I drive a 1988 Honda Prelude with 297,000 miles. :-)
Had to do a double take when I saw James and Joe’s name popped up. Always watch you both and amazed what I learn from each of you. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! 😄
Retirement; I recommend it to anyone who is interested 😊
I watch both your channel’s. I retired in 2017 at almost 56. One item I recently woke up to is the RMD on my IRA and taxes. I’m meeting with a financial advisor next week; I recognize i need to make some adjustments to my plan because of listening to you two gentlemen. Thank you 😊
I’m glad to hear that!
No RMD on ROTH accounts…
I agree with Joe regarding stress. My blood pressure dropped 20 points upon retirement.
Great interview, love both your channels.
Wow so great to have two of the best of the best Retirement CZcams experts collaborate on this tremendous video. I got many key points and inspiration from this fantastic discussion!
Yeah, this is huge, powerful advice. Fear of the unknown: We're prepped to start school, build a career, but are never prepped for retirement.
James and Joe are two of the best on the subject of retirement.
Please, more specifics: What salary, did wife continue to work, health care, portfolio, projects?
Thank you!
Two of my favorite channels. Thanks for a great video.
Excellent video, thanks to both of you!
so CRAZY-all my favorite internet peeps are meeting!! worlds collide-cats and dogs living together!!
😊😊
James and Joe collaborate. Excellent!
Great talk.. two of my favorite you-tubers! On the verge of retirement myself... thinking through this!
Love the collaboration! Great and informative video! Joe is right, the information is out there!
2 of my favorite retirement planning influencers on 1 screen!!!
I love it!!!
Thanks guys!!!
Thanks for watching!
Loved this episode. I’ve been tracking James and Joe for the past month listening and learning. Both guys are great and have knowledge/wisdom to share. Listen in!
Two of my favorites. So awesome. Thank you gentlemen
Great collaboration gentlemen!! Watch both your channels, retiring early January. I took a week off over thanksgiving for a “staycation”………for the first time I looked at my wife and told her I don’t want to go back on Monday. Y’all have a great day!!
Glad to hear that! Thank you.
Wow! I've been watching joe for a while and only recently started watching root. This is amazing to see the colab!
James you asked some really great questions and this was a very informative interview!! Thanks!!
We just became clients of Root Financial with JT and are extremely excited to work with a company that has such thoughtful leadership. James you are doing a fantastic job with your company’s culture and we appreciate your videos.
Thanks, Rick! We look forward to working with you and Lily!
I am gleaning, thx so much.
All reluctant retirement dreamers need to read the book "Die with Zero"
Great book
Love it!
I listen to and have benefited from both Joe and James’ YT channels. My wife retired in June 2023 and I retired in September 2023. We are 58. Loving retirement in Hershey PA! Roth conversions will start next year. Thank you both for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
Thanks for supporting our shows!
Fantastic interview. I’m preparing to retire in the next couple of months at 64 and this helped me go through a lot of the issues that come up. Thank you.
So glad to hear that!
Fear of the unknown is real. Great conversation.
Love this. I am currently 54 planning to retire at 64, but I'd love to retire sooner. Problem is, I have a lot of expensive plans for retirement that will require ample financial resources. I have deferred a lot of expenses (new home, RV purchase, etc) in order to save more for retirement and I am doing well in that dept, but the trade off is not being able to enjoy those things until I am much older. Fortunately, I am in excellent health and I prioritize maintaining that, but there are no guarantees for the future.
2 of my favorite guys on CZcams
Nice interview. I've watched some of Joe's videos before.
Another to check out is two sides of FI. They are also good.
yeah I transitioned , at 48 I became a relief fill in play work guy. Nice being able to get out and not care guy. I looked forward to it…. and realized around 55 that I was also topping off my SS . getting rid of a few zero’s on your SS record is big. Just a little payroll turns a zero year to 90% theres socialism in SS…..
Thanks for a great discussion. I was fortunate to meet Joe, who helped me make the retirement decision instead of waiting 'one more year!'
Great to hear
The exact 2 people I wanted to collab! I love both of their channels, full of Insights and truths!
Glad to hear that!
ME Too!!
Great show
Even with nothing to do on any day still moves faster than when I worked. I have to think of things to do. The lists gets done to fast.
Confidence to retire and spend money is a big issue as Joe mentioned. Fun to see these two guys together. Joe is a talker 😂
Great interview. Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
James read the comment to reduce the beige
😂😂 point taken!
Great job James
Thank you
Nice job. Great information.
Thank you
Thank you both for the discussion. James, you asked good questions. Joe had a good concept. Think about how long you and your significant other will be physically active. If the age is 75, how many more years does that give you to go and do. As humans, we often forget how much our physical abilities change within 3 to 4 years, let alone 10 to 15 years.
Thanks for watching
SPENDING: I keep it simple: $1K a month in cash, auto-pay bills, and charge everything else. I pay off the CC in full every month. I see if my bank account is going up, down, or steady. It has been going up slightly.
Hi James, I have been watching your CZcams videos for a year now and like what I am hearing. I’m at that point in life now where I want to retire but have some fears….how should I go about talking to someone like yourself or someone in an another financial group…Mr. confused.
Considering Joe Khun is a retirement advocate, it seems like he works quite a lot.
I used to watch ch his channel
Nice surprise to see you both on one video!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Joe seemed to have enjoyed it! You should mention your podcasts more often, I listen to them while driving in both vesicles. They're quite good! I use USB sticks but any phone can play them and usually has a place to plug into the sound system in most vehicles.
its really pretty simple to determine if one can retire, know you expenses, know your income and factor in inflation
There’s a lot more to it than just that. That’s just the financial part. There is more.
Point is retire TO something
I wouldn't feel comfortable sharing my finances with family, friends or a retirement group.
Totally with you on that! Only I and my financial advisor know my finances.
Great conversation! What does Joe do for health care?
He said it in the video. I think it was Farm Bureau. He said he had a whole video on it.
My Problem: My wife and I have much different POV’s. She just wants to stay home and spends hours playing computer games. I am an outside guy who would love to travel.
Have you considered renting an RV for a few weeks? You would be able to travel and she could bring her laptop and play her games, lol. Would not be any fun for me on either count, but might be a trial compromise for you two.
Same here, wife and I rented a RV for a week in Florida. Going to do it in retirement this coming year. Makes sense
Spot on
Did you invest in oil & gas?
Hahahaha!
Consultants. Don't believe they pull their weight.
Good grief stop talking!!
