Adding A Walk In Freezer To Your Farm - Final Costs On Our Farm Business Expansion

- We finally have our walk in freezer installed, up and running. For a couple of years we have been using residential freezers for storing our farm products and it is time to expand our core infrastructure.
Today we are going to go over the entire costs for purchasing, setting up, wiring and replacing part of the freezer so it is ready to store product. The freezer is a singe phase, 220 volt unit that will replaces our current fleet of home freezers. This will be used to store our pork products such as chops, tenderloin, bacon, sausage and ribs. We will also be storing our pasture raised poultry cut ups such as breasts, wings, legs and thighs in the freezer for sale to our farmer's market customers.
We'll compare the costs of our unit to purchasing a brand new, comparable sized unit along with the setup costs included. You'll get the full picture of our entire investment into our farm business.
If you have been farming for a couple of years, it may be time to consider upgrading your infrastructure and adding a larger capacity freezer storage unit to your farm. This will allow us to keep our more popular cuts of meat in storage on a more consistent basis.

As a restaurant owner... I've always fantasized that I would have enough space for a walk in fridge/freezer some day in my house.
They are the BOMB! We love it.
Have you considered installing some kind of structure over the refrigerator to provide shade? (Even a couple of trees would do, but you will have to wait for them to grow! ) I believe the electrical bill for this refrigerator would drastically decreased.

Put structure. Not trees over it for added shade. Tree debris will be a maintenance item and if not taken care of will reduce your lifespan of the freezer unit.

I'm wondering after having it for a while what the electric bill is in comparison if you noticed a difference compared to residential freezer. I store 1 cow per year in chest freezer and have a second one for other meats pigs and such. I would like to grow to a larger setup and hold up to 10 head cattle and 20 pig after butcher in a walk in long term. But for now residential works.
We've ran the numbers and the walk in is actually cheaper than all the residential freezers we had. More efficient.

The box should last a good while. If we take care of the mechanical, it should be good for years.

We've kept one for personal use and I still have one that we are going to give to a family member. Otherwise, yep, sold them all. That was an adventure in itself.

Do you have a blast freezer as well? Wouldn't you lose moisture from your produce if you leave it in this to freeze slowly?
I do not have one. We don’t do produce. Only meat.
How much does the electricity cost per month to run this? I've been considering doing the same thing.

We actually save money with the big freezer. Been meaning to do a video on that.

Don't remember the name of the unit but we bought it from Whaley's Refridgeration here in Greensboro.
How much did the cost of your electric vary between that walk in and the chest freezers

I don't have exact numbers but the bookkeeper (Saundra) says it is cheaper to run the big unit instead of the smaller ones.

We own 20 and lease an additional 12.
