Southwest includes two free checked bag during every flight. Also you're paying an extra $40 to save almost 15 hours. While the plane was much shorter, but I have trouble believing the 1 + hour. When I fly I need to drive to the airport (90 minutes). Arrive 90 minutes early. Stand in line to go through security, which can be unpleasant. etc. Then after landing, wait for my baggage, hike to the parking lot etc. The last time I flew, I broke my leg. :-( It would also be interesting to compare driving as well.
Been taking Amtrak for the last 10 years on leisure trips and it’s worth it even when riding coach, I fly only in emergency scenarios only, I’m over the bull jive when it comes to flying
You don’t take amtrak to get places fast. You take it for the journey. If you’re in a rush, drive or fly. If you want to see the United States and relax, take amtrak.
This could be a possible HSR route if CHSRA's future Sacramento branch extends to Eugene, than connects via interlining with the Future Cascadia HSR between Eugene and Vancouver. This can be done by easily extending past Sacramento Union Station to the relatively straight interstate 5 corridor to Eugene, where it can connect to the Cascadia HSR and have a stop in Portland. This could even allow San Diego-Vancouver via HSR, if you want to.
Unfortunately Amtrak doesn't service as many places as airlines do. I live near Alton, IL.For me to take the 65 mile trip to Centralia IL on Amtrak, I would have to go North to Chicago (300) miles. Then switch trains and travel South another 300 miles to Centralia. In other words, I would travel 600 miles ( all day) to get to a city that is only about 65 miles east of my starting point.
Tbh I’d rather go the traditional route of riding trains, I don’t feel safe on planes.😣 It’s honestly terrifying being that high up and constantly worrying if you’re gonna crash. Ik it may sound like I’m paranoid but we all have our reasons.
The question is do you want comfort and great views at a good price, or do you want to get there fast? If I had a business trip and I had to get somewhere fast I would choose the plane. But if I wanted to go on vacation and speed wasn't important, I would want my vacation to start as soon as I leave. I would want comfort and beautiful views out my window. When my vacation starts, time is non-existent just as long as I get to my destination.
For me air, no contest, and I’d pick that view as nicer for me personally. I did really like the comparison though even if I came out differently than other viewers :)
If you have the time I would invest in the train ride simply to admire the view and have a few extra hours for napping so that you can have a great time when you reach your destination. Sometimes the hustle and bustle takes the fun out of actually having fun. However if you’re in a hurry to get there and not much time to enjoy the plane would be the best option. But I’m a romantic so I’ll choose the train
Does that include time spent checking into the airport and travelling between the terminal and the city centre? Obviously it’s not going to make up 15 hours but I’m pretty sure it’ll take the multiplier from 14 to like 4
Yeah that's true. You want to be at the airport 2 hours early for that 1 hour flight. I dunno how easy trains are in America but in Europe you just show up at the right time and hop on. They don't even check your ticket until the train is moving.
If we could double track and upgrade to 110 mph all the passenger train routes Sacramento to Portland would take 5-1/2 to 6 hours. By plane? 1-1/6 hour. But add 2 hours for security, 1 hour for baggage claim, and at least 1 hour driving to and from the airport, and you have total travel time for taking the plane of at least 4 hours. More if the traffic is stall-and-crawl at each city. 1-1/2 hours longer is worth it cause you don't have to deal with traffic and TSA stress.
Trains, hands down. We just need to electrify them, make them 110mph avg, and most of all GIVE THEM PRIORITY OVER FRIEGHT. That's the real issue, freight, and their 4 mile long trains with one engineer 🙄
Using trains is also much more of a green option as opposed to flying, I prefer it whenever I'm going anywhere top far from home but just close enough for the train
Well, yes, there are distances in America. In Hungary, you can get anywhere from Budapest in 3 to 4 hours, if you want to travel the length of Hungary by car, it will take 6-7 hours 😃
I was an engineer for SP now UP and at we would have to what's called a Dead Head and it would SUCK because the Amtrak train would STOP where wouldn't, it's painful riding Amtrash.
Time is money, if you’ve got the time to spare, like during summer, take a train. if you’ve got the money but only a week worth of vacation then take a plane. Not many people can say they have ridden a train before anymore so that’s a plus. Also you can bring a large amount of luggage for no extra cost. P.S, bring your own food if you didn’t pay for the dining car! It’s very expensive and very mediocre!
Depends on your reason for traveling. I say if you have time to spare and want to make it more of a journey go with the train option. If your destination’s more important fly.
plus back in the day im not sure if they still do it but they serve alcohol and had snacks and a little bar so I think it's way better than the plane if your not too worried on time
It all depends on how you feel and what you’re willing to do with the time. If you want to get there faster, take a plane. If you want to relax more and sightsee, take the train
Had my first experience from Baltimore to Charleston. It was 10 hours but it kinda didnt felt like 10 hours especially once you take out a Nintendo Switch. Spent the time to play and beat the main story in Xenoblade Chronciles 3.
Even the Amtrak Capitol Corridor train is pretty nice. Lots of legroom - like business class on a plane. Go to a restroom on the train any time you like vs planes with seat belt signs going on and & off. But you might experience quite a delay near Martinez as they raise and lower a rail bridge to let ships pass.
Not to mention no TSA and no $100 charge for an extra small suitcase. We really need a high speed rail.
It's on it's way. We're already building one here in California that stretch from Sacramento to San Diego.
Plus you get double the luggage capacity on Amtrak for no extra charge

This could even allow San Diego-Vancouver via HSR, if you want to.
"Easily" and construction in modern America, especially California aren't two words that belong together in a sentence.
That leg of the trip is mostly at night. The sun goes down after Eugene, OR then boom 6 or 7 am you wake up in Sacramento.
Tbh I’d rather go the traditional route of riding trains, I don’t feel safe on planes.😣
It’s honestly terrifying being that high up and constantly worrying if you’re gonna crash. Ik it may sound like I’m paranoid but we all have our reasons.
Hey Sacramento one of my local stations!!!!
May have taken an hour to fly, but you have to include the arriving at least 2 hours early, weather delays, and baggage area.
I would choose the Train for $68, the scenery is worth the extra hours. Plan ahead!
Hands down I love you guys love this video
Amtrak just sounds so much better, I'm planning my first trip for next year. I'm taking a friend back to Vegas cause we flew last time
I would choose a train most of the time, but usually the cost is crazy!
I would say that a plane is way more time efficient. But if you want to have a fun experience and you happen to like trains, Amtrak is the way to go.
Train looks fun, as long as you're not in a huge rush.
So basically
Take a Plane if you need to get there fast,
Take a Train if you want to enjoy getting there
For me air, no contest, and I’d pick that view as nicer for me personally. I did really like the comparison though even if I came out differently than other viewers :)
I would still take the train. 👍🏾
Honestly I would still take the train
YOu also need to add the 2 hours for security for the plane ride.
I want the journey, but my parents only want the destination. So it’s anything but the train for my family, sucks for me, cuz I really want to.
The rails never fails it might be slower than a plane but it never fails
If we could double track and upgrade to 110 mph all the passenger train routes Sacramento to Portland would take 5-1/2 to 6 hours. By plane? 1-1/6 hour. But add 2 hours for security, 1 hour for baggage claim, and at least 1 hour driving to and from the airport, and you have total travel time for taking the plane of at least 4 hours. More if the traffic is stall-and-crawl at each city. 1-1/2 hours longer is worth it cause you don't have to deal with traffic and TSA stress.
Thank you for sharing your trip here.
I was an engineer for SP now UP and at we would have to what's called a Dead Head and it would SUCK because the Amtrak train would STOP where wouldn't, it's painful riding Amtrash.
i'm gonna go with the train everytime baby
Time is money, if you’ve got the time to spare, like during summer, take a train. if you’ve got the money but only a week worth of vacation then take a plane.
Not many people can say they have ridden a train before anymore so that’s a plus. Also you can bring a large amount of luggage for no extra cost. P.S, bring your own food if you didn’t pay for the dining car! It’s very expensive and very mediocre!
Planes may be for faster destinations but trains are a real journey!

Depends on your reason for traveling. I say if you have time to spare and want to make it more of a journey go with the train option. If your destination’s more important fly.
Anyone who wears Doc Martens is automatically a friend.
plus back in the day im not sure if they still do it but they serve alcohol and had snacks and a little bar so I think it's way better than the plane if your not too worried on time
It all depends on how you feel and what you’re willing to do with the time. If you want to get there faster, take a plane. If you want to relax more and sightsee, take the train
It’s all what you want. I have never traveled that far on a train. It sounds fun I would love to see the views, but you can’t beat that travel time.
It's which is better. Not what is better. When there is a restricted range of answers (two in this case) which is used. 😢
Does Amtrak provide Internet & Bluetooth for their Bedroom Customers from Chicago to San Francisco?
Had my first experience from Baltimore to Charleston. It was 10 hours but it kinda didnt felt like 10 hours especially once you take out a Nintendo Switch.
Spent the time to play and beat the main story in Xenoblade Chronciles 3.
You have to add the two hours they ask you to be at the airport early for the TSA line.
Train is for the true fans and plane is for the busy guy
Amtrak every time!
Fun fact: in some cases, if you include all the airport stuff, like crowds, security, etc. trains can actually be faster than a plane!
Tbh if your in a hurry take a plane if not and just wanna relax before reaching your destination and see some nice views take the train
