No way would I go back to a Hemi from the Ecodiesel for towing. The tow ratings for the ED are *slightly* lower but the fuel economy and overall effortless feel with the ED when towing makes it the hands-down winner. Towing fuel economy with the ED is 50 to 100% better than the Hemi and the engine isn't screaming when pulling a good size trailer. I can go nearly double the miles pulling our travel trailer with the Ecodiesel as I could with the Hemi - that's real world experience. The Hemi is an awesome engine and definitely the better engine for speed, aftermarket mods and overall sexiness. But if you need excellent fuel economy, effortless towing and serious torque then the ED is the right choice. Excellent review!
Delete it and you will even get better results! I would never consider a hemi engine at all.
what’s the max towing cap
With that being said you recommend the ecodeisel
@@luisgarza2069 Yes, and the new Gen 5 truck’s diesel is even better. Since my post I sold my 2014 EcoDiesel and bought a 2021 with the new version of the engine. I’m enjoying it more than my previous truck
Diesel is almost always the better choice. You travel way more miles, torque is insane, and its cheaper at the end. Love this RAM diesel. Fantastic
Hi! I just bought a 2022 Limited EcoDiesel. I live in Northern Vermont and it is my daily driver along with its work-related duties. After 2 months and 1,800 miles my average fuel economy is 26.9. I had a Hemi as a loaner for a couple of weeks before and was at 18.9. Ram recommends 89 octane, which is $3.77 vs $3.99 for diesel. Based on those figures 15K miles would cost $2,992 Hemi; $2,224 EcoDiesel. My mileage improves on long trips and is impacted less by heavy loads, driving in the mountains, or towing. I don’t have the larger capacity fuel tank, but the range on a full tank is around 550 miles.
I suspect a younger version of me would like the snappier performance and more aggressive engine notes of the Hemi. But my 49 y.o. self loves the quiet, efficient, diesel.
BTW thank you for your videos. They were very useful during the buying process. You do a great job!
If you don't mind me asking do you have the 3.21 or 3.92 rear axle? If 3.92, did you drive one with 3.21 to compare? Thx.
Still you are happy with your ED RAM ?
I have to disagree about the towing. You can tow almost the same weight, actually more depending on how the truck is optioned with the Ecodiesel. And the fuel economy is double the Hemi. Completely worth it. I just traded from a Hemi to the Ecodiesel and I went from averaging 13.5 mpg to 25+ mpg per tank.
How were you averaging 13.5 with the Hemi. Are you always running from the cops? Mine averages 18.5
@@nick21b1985 3.90 rear end gear and daily driving in town back and forth to work.
I have a 2017 with 3.92 gears and I average in the 18's
@@nick21b1985 glad you got that, I did not. I was driving in Orlando in lots of stop and go traffic with little highway driving. My other Hemi I had got 19 or 20. But I'd rather have the Ecodiesel. I just averaged 29.4 on a 1300 mile trip.
29-32 mpg with the 3rd gen ecodiesel, 20-22 local
I love that delmonico red pearl. Truck looks fabulous.
I tow with the 2016 limited eco diesel.. Its excellent! I can tell you its better than my coworker who tows with the Hemi. I pass him all the time ,most hemis that tow alot have issues .. Stick with the diesel for towing folks..
Such a very good video good job and that is, a very nice good looking truck I've ever seen*💗
I really like this years revamped look. I love the blacked out version of this style too with the black rims/grill.
Looks very similar to my 2020. The camera mirrors weren't available with the tow mirrors on my year. I have the longer box than this truck but still with 3.91 rears.
Only other change I noticed was a handful of differences in the infotainment ui.
Very happy with mine.
If you are towing or driving across the country get the Diesel. Nothing can beat a Diesel for towing.
I custom ordered a 2021 Ram Ecodiesel crew cab in March 6.4 bed 4wd with 3.21s, currently have 7,500 miles on it no issues. I pull a 27ft over all length Puma travel trailer in the summer months I live in Idaho lots of hills and fighting wind it pulls it fine if you stay around 65 to 70 and returns a solid 12MPG. So far I would recommend this truck. I got it with the 33gal tank option, I can easily go over 700 miles between fill ups. Even now with the diesel being higher then gas here I’m still saving money on fuel vs my 2019 3.5 Ecoboost.
Same here. I just drove from San Antonio to Baton Rouge, had a half a tank when I arrived (7.5 hours). I love my ecodiesel, 33gal and tech package are the best options I have and I have them all (custom ordered).
What is the weight of the trailer. I have found a left over 22 with the eco diesel and 3.21 was just wondering how it would handle around the 5-7000 pound tow?
@@phildunaway8568 my camp trailer weighs around 5300lbs dry with water and all the stuff I bring with us she’s about at the max I would haul with the 3.21s. According to the VIN mine is listed to haul 8k but I wouldn’t do it on the freeway or daily. Keep in mind I’m in Idaho it’s constantly windy it seems and lots of hills. It’s pulls it alright, but not going to win any races. Currently have 23,000 on it now not a single issue so far.
I'm wondering if it still has 29 on the highway with that 3.92 read end? Is that rear end standard with the diesel?
Nice truck, I love the color, if it had the 6'4" bed it would be perfect.
I love you and your channel Ben, but man you speak so fast!
Now, onto the truck. I am simply amazed by the look of the Limited or Longhorn. Plus, it holds it's physical appeal year after year. I'm typically a ford guy but this tuck is now at the top of my list for a new truck
Ben does this truck have the light in the tailgate handle too? I have a 21 limited lol
Great looking truck!
Really sweet color !!!
What is the estimated MPG with the Eco-Diesel and tank size?
2022 dodge limited eco diesel is a beautiful truck love it. Dodge always built awesome trucks
What is the mpg for the eco diesel?
I definitely disagree with the towing decision on the Hemi.. The Hemi may be RATED to tow more, but in the REAL world, the Ecodiesel has a far superior towing experience. It will pull the sane weight up hills without SCREAMING and without having to work nearly as hard. Definitely go Ecodiesel for any amount of regular towing. Otherwise, your Hemi WILL be getting passed by the Ecodiesel Rams with their QUIET, EASYGOING chug-chug diesels as their torque band easily pulls the same -- or more -- weight up the hill. Oh, and a BONUS - you get FAR better fuel economy with the diesel too. The only cost is a little more maintenance with fuel filter changes about every 15K miles and a bottle of DEF about every 3K miles. The Ecodiesel is less than a second slower 0-60, which is not a bad tradeoff. With 480 lb-ft of torque and the smooth diesel powerband
if you are going to tow a lot, get the diesel. Nothing beats a Diesel for towing or running across the country. get the diesel.
Does that have the start/stop technology?
I completely disagree with your opinion on towing. Towing purposes is the exact reason I got the Ecodiesel instead of the Hemi. The eTorque Hemi is the only Hemi option worth considering if you're towing with a Hemi and want to compare it to the Ecodiesel.
By chance anybody you guys know about can you get a8 ft long box put in? Or come with
Im not sure if they redesigned the internals of the new refreshed eco diesel.
But The first ram I drove the engine blew up at 65,000KM. 2014 model year
Happened in 2017
Went to the dealership and the technician said engine failure on these is very common. He had a customer have 2 engine replacements…
Best advice
keep oil very clean. Plug in winter. Warm up first for few minutes and gently get going.
It has been completely redesigned
Thanks for this review, Ben. Really enjoy your Ram reviews. Coincidentally, today I ordered a Big Horn Eco-Diesel 4x4 in Delmonico, but an oddity at the dealer was that the ordering system would not allow us to add the premium lighting package. Do you know if the '22 has the LED lighting as standard?
Halogen bulbs are standard on the big horn
I’ve been waiting to order a big horn Ram for about 2 months now and I’ve only been waiting for the premium lighting package the whole time. Still hasn’t become available for the Big Horns 😔 getting tired of waiting, I may just order it with the halogen lights
@@jaimezavala2973 Crazy that it's not available currently. I don't want to go aftermarket if I can avoid it, but I'm not sure there's much choice at this point. Either that or I live with the halogens and simply upgrade the bulbs.
@@alana1079 I don’t want to go aftermarket either, but I really like how the LED lights look over the regular halogen lights. But I also don’t know if I want to keep waiting either at this point
I have halogens on my 2021 Big Horn sport BUT those LEDs look so much nicer! My next truck in a couple years will definitely have LEDs…
Soooooo sweet!😊🥰🚗👍
Nice truck - pretty color
I had my '21 Limited Off-Road Group Eco-Diesel for 5 months, and I loved it. Sadly, I wanted the Defender 90 more and sold the Ram. Made a good profit too.
@Nabi Meziane How's the Defender vs the Ram?
@@scottandrews4822 it’s amazing, over 12k miles Now on it.
Yes it's worth it every truck you review is worth it.
Have a big horn edition, and wished it had a console and a longer bed. Still a nice truck
1500 diesel tows 12,560 ... The eTorque hemi tows 12,750. The gas milage is def worth loosing 190 lbs of towing in my opinion. The non eTorque hemi only tows 11,610. That is almost a 1000 less than the diesel. Diesel is slower, but has more torque. The price is the hard part.
@HalfShell true... A diesel Ram's payload is just under 300lbs less depending on the configuration. Depends on the individual use. For us pulling something like a trailer payload doesn't mean much. I would never use a 1500/F150 for 5th wheel. That's a job for a 2500+/F250+. Construction kinda jobs could benefit from extra couple hundred pounds I'm sure. Once again depends on individual use. For me I like that 30+ mpg, and the extra torque.
@@charleskessler1905 About 2 months ago I did a weekend trip from Tuscaloosa, AL, to Pensacola, then back and forth to Destin a few times, and back to Tuscaloosa. Averaged 31mpg on the trip. If I still had my Hemi I would have filled up 3 times to the basically 1 tank on the EcoDiesel.
@@ChasingBama That 30+ number is sooo tempting. Ford just stopped putting the 3.0 diesel in their F-150. I won't do a Chevy. Which leaves Ram with the last none super duty/2500-3500 to have a diesel. I wanted to buy a Ram Backcountry this year, or next. I thought since it's built on a Bighorn I could get it with a diesel. That was a big NOPE, :/. The Backcountry forces yea to get a 5.7 even though it's built on a Bighorn that the diesel is available on. Now I don't know what to do. 2023 Ranger (gas of course in the US), Bighorn without the Backcountry package (diesel), or ??.
@@charleskessler1905 well if it was me I'd figure out a way to get the diesel. I'm not sure what the back country package is, is that similar to like the Rebel?
@@ChasingBama It's a offroad package from Ram. It comes with some nice features, and is "cheaper" than a Rebel. They list it with the features included with the Backcountry package. It's also built on the Bighorn, so the newer of the two Rams (old body, new body) they currently sell both. The newer body style Bighorn has the diesel as a option. The older body style the diesel isn't a option. They trick you with it two ways though. One even though it's built on a Bighorn the diesel has been removed for this package for whatever reason. Two they list it starting at $41k. We figured $50k with add ons. Nope! Ram FORCES about $10k worth of add ons. That puts it just over $50k bare minimum even though they say $41k. With any add ons the buyer chooses it can hit $60k+. Seems like a used car sells tactic by Ram to me. I don't mind paying $50k, but I don't want to hit $60k+. This leaves me with getting a bare minimum watered downed Bighorn diesel vs a fully load decked out 2023 Ranger gas. Not sure who wins that. I'm waiting for the US ranger info to decide. Should be a 31mpg diesel vs 26mpg gasser. The 5mpgs don't mean all that much to me.
Ford and Ram has the best interior space
ordered a rebel last month. just wish they could build them quicker haha probably 4 to 5 months right now
When you delete the ecodiesel it really opens it up. When you tune them. Even better. The stock ED with the 3.92 gears tows so much better than the Hemi FYI.
How much of an improvement?
Had bought a brand new top of the line Dodge Ram a few years ago, and my trans went at 1600 miles, smh. They rebuilt it, but since then, from that experience I’ve been scared of Ram trucks no matter how nice they look. Maybe one day I’ll come back…
There has to be more to this story, that really sucks.
I’m surprised the eco diesel has the dual chrome exhaust….nice !!!
7:25 curbs tf out of the truck haha
What’s it like owning the diesel? Are maintenance costs much more than gas burners? Oil changes, etc?
What’s different about it. Never owned a diesel but love these 3.0 liter turbos for road trip economy.
From what I’ve heard and read the cost of maintenance, combined with the initial extra cost for the diesel, effectively offset any mpg savings.
Diesel can get you longer range per tank of fuel and much better towing mpg. Gas is easier to maintain and simple.
Nice...except for that future money pit air suspension
Ben, do you know when Dodge will allow people to build the new challengers on the Dodge website? And when are they expected to arrive at dealers?
odd comments on towing, the diesel shines in towing MPG.
Good looking truck but my buddies that have the ecodiesel complain about sluggish start and poor acceleration etc...
Tell them to look into a peddle comander. Like $300 but it plugs into the obd port and improves that sluggish feeling so much you'd think it was a hemi
I just ordered a 22 ram 1500 limited night edition and the dealership couldn't tell me if it would come with the heads up display, the technology group was not shown on the build site but they still couldn't tell me if it was something I could have added to the order
I just got the 21 limited night edition and have the hud
On the Limited
The gear knob is something I’ve never seen, I wonder if it takes time to get used to. Coming from someone who drives a 2002 ram ;-)
It took me a little to get used to. But I've had mine 18 months now and it's totally fine. It has some features in it that aren't possible with old style lever.
Example if u get out and forget to put it in park it will notice and do it for yiu as well as apply the parking break.
How's the reliability been on this generation of EcoDiesel? I'm fortunate enough that my work gives me a stipend for a car allowance since I drive a lot, but there are some strings attached (4 doors, 27mpg hwy, 7 years old or newer) to qualify for the stipend. That's the only reason I have interest in this truck/engine combo over others, it checks all the boxes for the stipend, but what's most important to me as the owner and maintainer of the vehicle is the reliability. I'm currently rolling around in a Camry right now just because I know they're bulletproof, but I'd rather be in a truck. Any insight is appreciated, thanks!
I used to work as a traveling wind turbine technician and got a stipend for truck aswell. I ended up getting 2020 Bighorn Ecodiesel and was doing about 120miles a day round trip because my sites were remote ones in Wyoming. I really liked the truck. Even with the extra weight of 4WD hardware l, it still got 28mpg highway. Then when I got a hard tonneau cover it actually went up a couple mpg to 30. Granted this was at 7000ft elevation. I noticed the mpg dropped a little bit once I got to sea level. But during that whole time, I never had a single problem with it. It would start fine even when it was -20 out. Doing all highway, I would get about 550 to 600 miles per 26 gallon tank (with 3.92 rear end). If you do a lot of highway driving, then this is the truck for you. If you do a lot of stop and go city driving, you'd be better off with the V6. Only issue I ever had is that the transmission was a little clunky for the first few shifts after start up for the first few thousand miles, but after that it smoothed out
Have a 2020 Limited EcoDiesel since new and have 40,000 miles on it (I drive a lot). No issues whatsoever. Amazing highway truck and crazy good fuel economy (costs pretty much the same to run as my Honda Accord 2.0T). Sounds like a perfect truck for your use case.
@@grantlindsay8102 thanks for the reassurance! The 3.0 Duramax seems to be having more issues than this engine, so I’m leaning Ram right now.
Ram should ship their eco diesel in Asia Philippines I would like to see this in a dealership
Delmonico Red the best Color.
For the 22 Rams I hope they have LED lights available for the Big Horn models when I get ready to get one.. I’ll settle for halogen but I’d prefer LED
I have halogens on my 2021 Big Horn sport but LEDs looks so so much better!!!!
@@leedanielson7452 I have contacts with my local dealer and he said that the LED lights on Big Horns are on a temporary restriction.. Halogens are great don’t get me wrong. If I have to settle for Halogen I’ll get Halogen.. I just want my truck lol
@@M_Perry530 There is nothing like a new ram!!! My 2021 Big Horn is my seventh new ram I’ve had over the years and loved everyone of them….
The eco diesel is a way better option for towing all the way around!
Great video but a little fast talking 😀. Are you being charged for time?
My ram mechanic told me there's so many fuel pump issues
I know a few people with this. Never heard of that issue. Heard of def fuel issues freezing up in winter though.
Fuel pump went out on my 2019 BH, but it's covered under powertrain warranty. 6Yr./60,000 miles, for Hemi...I'm at 43,000 miles and that's the only problem I've had.
I love eco diesel
You can tell he never tows if he recommends a hemi over a diesel.
diesel is way better for towing
I have a hemi ram, and an ecodiesel Wrangler. The ecodiesel is 100% worth it when faced with the option of the 3.6 v6 OR the ecodiesel with no hemi option. But, since the ram gets the hemi, I would say it's probably not worth it on the ram. My Jeep manages 22mpg on 37s with the ecodiesel driving at real world speed... 80-85mph. I imagine the ram would do about the same. Not really worth the MPG improvement and while the ecodiesel adds a lot to the Jeep, it's still a somewhat lazy diesel compared to that lovely hemi.
I tend to average 25+ in the Ecodiesel versus the 13.5 my 2020 Hemi Ram got. Definitely worth it and honestly I don't miss the acceleration. I don't think it's that slow to be honest.
@@ChasingBama At what speed? My JL will get 30mpg if I idle along in the slow lane but I don't have patience for that kind of thing.
@@jimdieselsgarage 75-80. It's sits at like 33 or so on the highway. Like I said that was my total trip mpg. This was not all on the interstate. I have the 3.21 rear end gear. I doubt it would get above 28 with the 3.91 rear.
@@ChasingBama Pretty solid. I find the mopar MPG guess-o-meter to be off by 2-3 mpg so cruising along a 80-85 getting 25ish sounds pretty feasible where getting even 15 on the Hemi might be a stretch. The Hemi is much more responsive, though, so you gotta weigh what you want more I guess. I could imagine being happy with either.
@@jimdieselsgarage I always do my own math, I reset my trip computer on each tank to get a real world number. It's true depends on what you want to be happy. If gas was under 2 dollars I'd be driving a SRT again 😁
Small word of advice, take it or leave it...
Separate your words
Ben I really don't think those any trucks are worth 70k 80k 90k just too ride around town in
Did someone say Eco-Diesel 👀
honestly the fact dodge has the cummings in the 2500 I just don't know why they couldn't get a smaller version for the 1500 as for diesel an i6 is just a better layout and it can fin in the 1500. and it would have been more reliable. because this ecodiesel is nice on paper but in the real world... meh especially for a diesel
Tundra still looks better to me . Haugen cluster looks cheap and the center console looks like the placed a tablet in the center might look better placed witdth in stead of length wise. Small things but they count when your spending what north of 45k
Truck would be better with the 22 stock wheels. Those wheels just don’t look right.
Love the color and the Truck overall! But not a big fan of Diesel Engines
I think it's stupid how ram doesn't even have a power outlet in the bed...
Does this turn into a lemon immediately or the first day the warranty expires?
get the extended warranty - the modern diesel is all choked up
HEMI is amazing, but this tows more than HEMI, please make correction
The gas mileage for the eco diesel sucks because, my 2021 GMC 1/2 ton Denali with the 3.0 inline 6 duramax turbo diesel gets about 28-29mpg city and 35-35mpg highway with 6,000 miles on it. Has 277HP and 460foot pound that tows 9,500 pounds. Just saying that the eco diesel isn’t even in GMC diesel.
He says crazy gas mileage. LOL.
Man slow down in the details. You’re spitting words out when going over the detail. Slow it down, its not an interview
Geez dude, lay off the coffee!
STAY AWAY FROM THR AIR SUSPENSION! STAY AWAY FROM THE AIR SUSPENSION! They eventually fail, and super expensive to replace especially if your out of warranty. The Rams are amazing except for this option.
Easier to remove and replace with traditional suspension.
thee.....
Interesting how my ram 1500 bighorn 5.7L hemi 4x4 can tow 11,500 lbs and the limited ecodiesel can only tow 9,000. I guess it is “limited”…
It depends so much on what year and what model you have... We have the 2017 RAM 1500 Longhorn EcoDiesel Crewcap and this is the most powerful version of that year. Towing capacity mentioned in the loadsheet is not just related to torque...
My 2021 1500 limited Ecodiesel can tow more than 12k lbs
@@maxsanchez1937 yeah I looked it up and the max tow for ecodiesel is more than the hemi at 12,500lbs. That’s badass for a halfton.
You actually should check what your "rear" gear ratio is on your differential(s). 3.92s allow more power/torque to the wheels than 3.21s making for a higher tow capacity.
Sound like you're trying to sell both trucks. Come on man. Is your truck and it's diesel. Big trucks don't use Hammy's
I would prefer he delete the review abought towing. He is absolutely wrong in regards to towing. See Bob R review. I just bought one for its towing purpose only!!
Couldn’t understand a word you said. Speed it up so no one can understand anything
Try slowing down on the voice please
You need to slow down when doing a review and showing details.
9000 ish lbs tow capacity?!? And didn’t cover mpg at all. Cmon man. Trucks aren’t toys. Let’s review em fr or just go back to playing with toys. Weak review.
Terrible video get to the point
