M4 iPad Pro review - too ambitious?

- The new 2024 M4 iPad Pro 13” and 11” are astounding pieces of technology. They incorporate the best OLED display tech I’ve ever seen along with the bleeding edge of powerful, efficient processor silicon and cram it all into an “impossibly thin” chassis. This new slimness makes these devices a joy to use and handle, especially with the redesigned Magic Keyboard! In this video I give my initial review after using the 13” model for a few days. I discuss the new thin design, insane display quality, incredible performance with the M4 along with briefly touch on the keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro (both of which I’ll cover in dedicated review videos). Equally important though - I highlight the fact that these new iPad Pros may be “too ambitious” for what they currently run, iPadOS 17. All we can do is hope that at WWDC ’24, iPad Pro is finally graced with an operating system it deserves!

99% of users probably would not see day to day difference of this ipad over a M2, M1, or heck even a 2018 Ipad pro
The only thing I wish I had is the new Apple Pencil, but yeah I bought my M2 7 months ago (and finished paying for it last month) so I won’t be changing it anytime soon
exactly using ipad pro 2020..
yeah mostly... only time you'll notice a slight difference is doing something specific. Something high intensive app or program like editing or gaming. Other than that for the most part, they'll feel the same.
True. Most people will also not notice any difference in day to day stuff on an MacBook Air compared to a Mac Studio Ultra. No day to day stuff stresses out any M-series processor. It’s only when you get to the heavy duty apps where the power may make a difference.
@@techinrl9869 Yep.. very true. Ipad pros even the 2018 A12x chip is already powerful and smooth for day to day stuff. Now if your gaming or editing on an 2018 iPad Pro now in 2024 where these apps are getting updated. You'll notice a difference.. Like gaming for example on Cod Mobile or something similar where its high graphics. The a12x Chip on the 2018 would lag and or freeze the game. Same thing with other high intensive programs. But for basic tasks, texting, emailing, web surfing, watching videos, music, spreadsheets, to do lists, pdfs and all that. the 2018 is still more than enough powerful and smooth for that. And same with MacBook Air M1. STILL a beast to this day.
I think it’s cool that they put an m4 chip in this new iPad before the Mac gets it. This tells me Apple may be planning something good with these new iPads.
Not necessarily, they’re likely just future proofing since they release iPad Pro every 18-24 months.
They had to for the tandem oled display, no other reason than that.
Glaze
I don't really think so. 2 reasons: we've thought this before when they added the M1 chips and nothing really materialised, unless we count stage Manager, which came out over a year later. Secondly, I think Apple are pivoting hard to ensure they keep up with AI developments, and I the M4 is designed with AI in mind (?)
@@hey_bucklebob I think they released it to keep up with other companies like nvidia
But it really isn’t that impressive
I agree they might not have to make an macOS copy but the IPad OS should have a PRO version when connected to keyboard and mouse that transforms the iPad into a more MacOS like experience
Perhaps they could add MacOS when connected to a keyboard and mouse or track pad, a monitor and power. The issue with MacOS and an iPad would likely be power usage and battery drainage.
I was going to buy the M4 iPad but then I changed my mind and chose the S9 Ultra just because of the Dex mode. It’s a shame Apple still didn’t make that function available
This is the rumour
@@delanodouglas6390 the macOS and iPadOS ATM share a huge chunk of their core and are optimized the same way, that’s why you get great battery life out of a MBA. They differ mainly in terms of UI, Rosetta 2 and how apps present themselves to the user. I bet if they compiled a macOS but with the iPadOS UI, it would run as you wanted it to. It’s not a question of if, but why doesn’t Apple do that. They will eventually do that, but not until sales go down quite a bit. This iPad will sell better because of the screen and powerful M4, maybe when the next version is out they’ll do that but without the Rosetta 2.
I re-uploaded! "ambitious" was misspelled in the intro. I spent way too long making it to keep that typo online lmao. Hope you enjoy :)
too ambishice 🔥
@@aleph_1ne i saw "ambitous" and went AH HELL NAH, we gotta go bald 😂😭
Happens to all of us CZcamsrs.
Appreciate the OCD bro hahaha. I honestly don't know what users want from the iPad.. but I do agree that making the interface more mac like when its docked makes sense. Apart from that, the iPad already excels at what a slab of glass is supposed to excel at.
@NoahHerman what video editing software are you using?
I just got done watching your shorts. Perfect timing to watch the whole video 👍🏻
I’m fine with it being too ambitious. Reminds of of old school Apple pushing the envelope with bleeding edge just for the sake of it, even if most people won’t utilize or understand it. If this can somehow lead to iPhones getting thinner and lighter again while retaining their rigidity and battery life I’m all for it.
I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't push the prices up to crazy levels as well. Innovation is good, but not if no one can afford it.
Lol dork
Been fun watching your channel grow and your skills sharpen.
Fantastic review thanks! With good understanding of the tandem OLED
Coming from a m1 IPad Pro user the 3 upgrades that interest me are the 1000 nits on sdr sustained the m4 chip and the oled display
Exactly why I’m upgraded only less self esteem people will disagree
@@prestonmacgotthamac3735 people don’t have to agree with you buy, it’s your choice, it doesn’t have to make sense
@@ricarmig right
1. What you will normally see is 600 nits. 1000 nits is only for extremely bright condition.
2. m4 is just a marketing twist. Nothing special compared to m3.
3. Oled display is good, but since iPad display even with ips lcd was so good, most of the people cannot tell the difference unless placing them side by side.
I save your money mate.
@@user-gy3kl5rd1l I have a m1 iPad Pro mini led with 600 nits sdr and 1600 nits hdr I’ve had it for a while hdr content looks amazing but its limited and sdr content is not so bright the 1000 nits sustained on sdr will make a difference
Hi Noah, great video, top content. What do you use to achieve your iPad desktop look please? It's absolutely insane and I need to have it. Thanks.
intro was golden❤
Hi. Do you have the M1 and M2 iPad Pros as well for a side-by-side comparison video with the M4 iPad Pro?
It sucks that only the pro models have 120hz otherwise I'd take the iPad Air 10/10 times. It feels like the pro is providing power that almost nobody needs.
Top quality video. Amazing!
That intro was AMAZING. Great job!
Great work Noah!
Great review! As an owner of a glorified $2k youtube watching machine (M1 12'9"), I agree with everything said here.
Killer into Noah! Got an M4 iPad Pro 13 inch coming tomorrow, upgrading from a 11 inch (Pre-M1 Series) Excited to upgrade.
Wow I’m even more excited for mine
Been waiting for this.
Hey Noah,
with the new ludicrous M4 upgrade,
does it support output of 120hz to external monitors though?
4k 120hz to be exact.
A bit dizzying and jarring for me to let my eyes keep changing from the 120hz ipad to a huge external 60hz monitor.
Fabulous work, as usual, Noah. 👏🏼👏🏼
Honestly i think it would be awesome if apple designed a feature for ipadOS that operated similarly to Samsung DeX.
You earned a subscriber, well done bro!
Been using an iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) and time to upgrade. Not pushing the limits on any of the devices. Trying to decide to buy the iPad Pro more for display and touch screen or buy a MB Pro or MB Air for about the same price. Not sure, but thinking I’m going to miss the touch screen
120HZ, Cellular, touch screen, pencil input, FaceID biometric, dockable on keyboard. My M1 iPad Pro replaced my computer. This ups the ante. The OLED panel is just awesome.
What is the screen like after longer use? I use my ipad Pro 2020 11 inch, which is LCD for work and leisure.
Emails, Teams, Excel, Word, movies, TV shows, procreate, and gaming. All combined, like 3 plus hours per day. Does the oled 1000 nits of brightness hurt your eyes at all??
Gave you a sub for the simple fact that you called out the absurdity of the 'does it bend' videos.
Great video yet again Noah. Incredible device, insane hardware, objective review. Let’s see what goes down like you said with iPad OS 18 at WWDC. Not holding my breath tho…..
These upgrades seem really substantial, I think this is the best update in years-I’m going to stay with my 2021 M1 Pro, though, because $129 for a new pencil, $349 for a new keyboard plus $1199 for a new iPad is just yeesh. I really hate that the new accessories aren’t compatible with iPads released even just a year ago, and vice versa. Excited to see what comes from WWDC this year tho 👀
I kinda want the new keyboard because it actually has a escape button
That’s the only thing I wanted was a new keyboard for my M1 iPad. Why wouldn’t apple make it for all iPads.
waiting on someone to test would the M1 or M2 work on new Magic Keyboard
But can it lay flat on a table?
Can’t wait to try the 11” M4 vs the 2018 11” 🤯
Sick opening Noah!
Easily the best review so far. I wish I saw the Keyboard more since that’s half the product for me. But very informative and well made otherwise 👏
I don't get reviewers nowadays, it's just too much cpu, too thin, too iPad like. Don't get me wrong your videos are in par with the ones from MKBHD but I don't watch these type of videos to decide wether to buy or not to buy a product, but because they are really funny and entertaining and clearly the production is top of the notch, I just can't stop watching them; meanwhile the videos from the old lady with cool t-shirts, gets to the pros and cons of each product and who should buy it, and so far she has been right about them.
What is that MagSafe ring/loop thing you got on the back of your iPhone? 😄
I’m kind of conspiratorial, my thought is they release the iPads a month and a half before WWDC, just outside of the return windows, . That so they can judge the sales numbers to decide if they need to release the most advanced iPadOS features to bump up sales, ie more MacBook like. Then if the sales numbers hit where they needed, they can shave off a few features for the next release to pump sales then.
i have a question , (please reply) is the new ipad pro TOO thin , or is it like , still comfortable ?
Now I get it why they made it so thin! The Magic Keyboard case!
It makes sense. With the old one it felt «top heavy»… this is now closer to a macbook air.
Noah can you do a rivew on the new Logitech combo touch?
More efficient chip and same battery life as before just because they had to make it thinner and cut on batter capacity. What for? Form over function? Thanks!
Open the iPad m4 and a Mac m4….. are they the same chip?
How much does the 13 with case weigh?
Can you use screen protectors on the nano texture display version?
yes!
Damn that intro! 💯🔥
intro was 🔥
That INTRO 🔥🔥🔥
My M4 iPad Pro 13 with 1tb and apple Pro pencil will be here tomorrow. I can't wait to start editing some photos and videos on it and see how much of a difference it is compared to my M1 iPad Pro with1tb
I was waiting specifically for you to upload your ipad video. Let me grab a cold one.
I gave you a like and subscribed to your channel. Thanks for a great review :)
Can you use the old keyboard on the new iPad ?
No, the magnets are positioned differently.
All I wanna know is what song that was in the intro!?
Wish you'd reviewed the NTG display too.
DUDEEEEE that intro made my pants fall off, that was AMAZING :D
Something I just realised is will the M4 mean thinner Macs?
They can't even give the option for a proper mouse pointer in the UI. Temper your expectations accordingly.
As a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 inch user, this M4 iPad Pro has me excited like I was back in 2018, but Apple must deliver on the software side. If they don’t, I will just keep using my current iPad since it would be useless for me to upgrade if barely any software updates make its way to the new iPad Pro. Like many, I’m hopeful, yet doubtful as well, because Apple has neglected the iPad.
Pricing is crazy . Just get the m2 pro 12.9! It’s like 900$ and much better than the air ones . I really don’t understand how someone can buy the air for 600/800 $ , no logic ! The new pros are too pricy . Just get m2 pro 🤩😍
I really hope this Tandem OLED panel makes its way to the new iPhone 16 series (if possible/feasible).
King of the intros ✊🏾
I finally got my M4 iPad Pro…I throughly enjoy it, but one thing that sticks out is the bezels…they seem so big! I wish they would shrink those bezels! The new Magic Keyboard is awesome. Coming from a 2018 iPad Pro, the new M4 iPad and keyboard much lighter.
Deymm so thin. Love the intro tho🔥
I would say more battery not thinner, but actually the thinness does make sense for a 13inch ipad
as processors get even smaller transistor wise, battery life will only improve!
@@NoahHerman but battery life could always be better in a thicker body
Intro was lit❤🔥
Your intros are insane Noah
2:39 does PD matter compared to IQ?
This started out so positive and then got so negative, lol. Totally agree though that Apple needs to do something about iPadOS.
Is 256 GB enough, want the 13” but I’m not sure if 256 will be enough stora
Yeah thats plenty for almost all usecases unless you’ll edit photo/video directly on it
I bought the 11 inch with 256. I have the previous iPad Pro and had 256 in that as well. It was plenty enough. Apple has just shipped mine due Thursday (in Australia)
@@codythepjust use a external SSD drive for the editing. I am sure that you can use an OTG cable on an iPad. Get a Crucial X8 1TB SSD and you should be straight. The drive is pocket sized
My 2018 iPad Pro still run strong
it's thin until you put a case on it.. which is absolutely required
Love that you are getting invited to Apple events. I have been watching since you had 50K subs. How far we have come.
appreciate you ❤️
This video looks awesome on my m1 mini-LED iPad Pro which I’ll be happily keeping for at least an extra year. Actually had it replaced recently due to 2 busted microphones so it’s basically still like new.
Have the pencil, hardly use it. NEVER purchased the keyboard because the virtual keyboard is more than enough. If I was able to write a 10 page college paper using the virtual keyboard, and the physical keyboard won’t even help me with Japanese, then there is no point to ever purchase one at this point for my personal usage.
That being said, it’s time for hybridOS (equal elements of iOS, MacOS, VisionOS) to finally hit the iPad. iPadOS is just 90% iOS and needs to go. An actual radical change of the OS is much needed, and slapping macOS won’t help it much IMO.
Glad I sold my M1 iPad pro. Still got 900 for it 2 months ago. M4 1TB should deliver today. Well worth the $900 difference for me
Seems bonkers for an iPad, but, it's still just an iPad. I think I will use this release to just buy a slightly older iPad that will still feel new to me as I'm still rocking the 2018 iPad Pro.
Mac OS is mouse-click optimized. IpadOS is touch optimized OS. Let those two OSes evolve naturally without forcing stuff on them.
till then all the power in ipad is wasted, and apple should stop claiming its a laptop replacement
Hot take
They literally created a magic keyboard for IPadOS. It’s now “mouse-click” optimized as you put it.
@@gwvaio The keyboard/trackpad is an accessory to ipad that allows you to do lightweight work. Real mouse-click work is done on laptops not ipads.
@@AliAbidalkareem lol that’s a software issue. Not a hardware problem. A click is a click. The device doesn’t care
If they add also xcode it was so embraced 😊
It’s awesome but people please realize that the other iPad pros are still great even the air 13 SO NO need to spend all that crazy money . I was gonna get but instead I stood with my awesome m2 iPad 13 pro and just bought a DJI drone and DJI gimble and still had money left over lol
What’s the point if it’s still running ipad os
This might be my next laptop
Dream hardware with children's software. $2000 Netflix machine.
The minimal updates to the hardware, in my opinion, do not specifically justify the purchase. I think Apple is offering the bare minimum in exchange for high profit and return simply because of the brand name. The economic situation in the US is changing to where purchasing something like this seems specifically out of reach and could possibly lead to buyer’s remorse. However, the operating system looks interesting and promising.
a billion dollars idea for Apple: give iPad the "MacPad" OS
Damn bro what a cooool intro. Saw it 5 times
When iPadOS comes with a proper “Finder” and haveFull feature apps will make the iPad an incredible device
It’s safe to say that Vision Pro was a flop and a gimmick. They did not sell very many units of them, and they should have focused on other areas like AI and dare we say Mac OS for the iPad. You surely gave Apple some cover as to why they are behind the rest of the other manufacturers? I am glad another reviewer on CZcams finally said it, Apple has too many products, it’s time they stop worrying so much about the pocket book and finally bring Mac OS to the iPad Pro, and a meaningful iOS revamp!
As long as I can’t use full or Desktop Ver of Microsoft Office suite. I’ll always keep it Mac
Indeed as VisionPro run iPad Apps it to needs the same mac-killer features the iPad needs.
I subscribed because of that intro. sick intro bro
Loved that intro, Noah ❤❤❤
Someone please tell me what screen size to get lol
If they have managed to fit Face ID into this thin iPad, could this be a hint that the MacBooks will finally get Face ID soon?
These intros are one of a kind to look at 😍😍
I think iPadOS 18 needs to knock it out the park
That intro… and then main video 😂
Entrance went HARD! Great review Noah
We are all waiting for something big at WWDC
The question of “a lack of ambition” should be properly addressed to the rest of the industry as against Apple
Completely agree about the stunning hardware. Personally really appreciate the thinness and lightness attempts to miniaturize everything over time.
But Apple needs to deliver iPadOS at WWDC or else it's a lot of expense that's the equivalent of buying a treasure chest without the key.
11:49 I am currently using my m1 iPad Pro with my headless m1 Mac mini running macOS via vnc. So I can switch between iOS and Mac OS on the same device. Wish Apple would make this more seamless or make the iPad Pro run macOS on device.
