  • Save yourself some time and headaches and listen carefully to this video when you activate your new Spypoint camera. I have experience with the Spypoint Solar, Link-S and Link-Micro. These Link cameras are pretty cool but the software that supports them is a bit difficult and Spypoint customer support seems to be quite overwhelmed with very slow response times. If you do this correctly the first time, you'll have much fewer headaches with this camera system.

    Energize Lithium batteries
    amzn.to/2YHDnUR
    32GB SD Card
    amzn.to/2PfKq4m
    I have 2 Spyoint SOLAR cameras that have been running continuously for 2 years with me having to touch them other than to swap out SD cards. That's pretty awesome. Occasionally, I'll get some distorted pictures but I think it might be a write speed vs trigger speed issue or maybe a temperature issue. It's intermittent and hasn't really messed me up yet anyway.
    I've had one Link-S running for about 7 months now (using Eneloop AA batteries) and transmitting 2/day and it's been great! Sometimes, you really have to coax the phone app to refresh and show you the pictures it has captured and the Spypoint web access is hit/miss. As I mentioned, so far, the camera itself has been working great. The problems usually come in on the Spypoint cloud side when you're trying to get your pictures.
    The Spypoint Link-Micro is very interesting. I have one that ran for about 1.5 months (maybe a bit less) using the AA Eneloop rechargeables. I think that's pretty good actually. It's small, compact and much more in-line with the price of standard trail cameras but with the cellular data plan which is awesome. You can't change any settings on the camera itself, it all has to be done via the app which means that it only changes when the camera next talks to the network (ie. when you have it scheduled to.. like 2/day). You can work around this a bit by turning the camera off and then back on because that forces it to connect back and the settings will update. For me, the deal breaker on the Micro is the battery life. I don't get out to my hunting lease that often and it's a bit of drive. 1 month battery life is just not going to cut it.

      @@jamesbentall3984 , i understand your frustration. It may not be anything that you're doing wrong at this point. I'm assuming you are in a place that gets good cell signal for the LTE? They make 2 different cell network cameras (Verizon only and LTE/ATT). If you have the Verizon one make sure you have a verizon signal. What does you app say your cell signal is? If it's below 25% it probably won't transmit. Are the batteries in good shape? Does your data plan for that camera still have room for more pictures? What is the transmission frequency you have selected for the camera? If you have it set to 1x/day it will take a while before the camera will try to transmit next although turning the camera off/on will make it communicate to the network. What does the app say was the last time the camera communicated to the network? Test the camera and make sure it's transmitting pictures somewhere with a good cell signal (maybe at home). Next thing to check is the SIM card. I would remove it make sure it's oriented correctly and re-install. Power cycle the camera and try again. If none of those things work you probably need to return the camera and get another one.

      @@strixoutdoors thanks for getting back to me . When spending £200 ( I live in England ) , you certainly expect it to work . As regards to your questions . How do I know if its lte or version as nothing that mentions it on the box . Battery life is 100%. Using energizer max lithium AA batteries. Signal states that it is at 100% and the communication between the app and the camera is quick and was within a few minutes of turning the unit on . It definitely must be a signal thing as using a 32gb San disk rated 10 . But when turn is on the light goes green and then goes red even with my phone right next to it . Very frustrating. How are your means of power cycling the camera ? So if I have a verizon does that only work in the US and the LTE nationally everywhere else ?

Yes, the same would apply to Link W regarding the firmware updates and the referral program. Just FYI, not everyone has great experience with these cameras. How much for the cloud monthly plan? Does it work in Canada? So i need to buy sim card and LTE plan?

    • @strixoutdoors
      @strixoutdoors  Před 4 lety +2

      I'm pretty sure it works in Canada (Spypoint is based in Canada). It's comes with a SIM card already and you don't need to buy an LTE plan. You will need to determine if you get cell coverage with AT&T or Verizon in the specific area that you intend to use the camera in. The camera requires at least 2 bars signal to communicate. The data plans (which you purchase through Spypoint) vary from FREE - $15/month depending on the number of pictures you want to be able to receive. Here is a link: www.spypoint.com/download/SPYPOINT_Catalog.pdf. There are addtional "packages" that you can purchase if you want to store those pictures on the Spypoint cloud and be able to access them over a long period of time. Typically, I can only access about a week worth of pictures through the app on my phone. I check the pictures most days and just save the ones that I'm interested it onto my phone. All of the pictures are kept on the SD card in the camera so you can access all of them when you eventually pull the SD card.

    • @strixoutdoors
      @strixoutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Hey, not sure I follow exactly but be sure to use an SD card between 2-32GB and be sure it is a Class 10. Format the card before using it in your camera and I highly recommend doing a firmware update to your camera before putting it out. You will need to update firmware on your cameras from time to time and spypoint has released multiple updates this year alone. I usually set my cameras to a 10 sec or 1min delay but most of mine are on feeders. If you're setting them up on a trail or somewhere the target animal will just be passing by I would try instant. The 1 problem with instant (even in that scenario) is that if wind/grass moving starts triggering your camera you'll get thousands of pictures of grass and it will run your batteries down really quickly.

      Which camera are you using? Yes, as far as I know, the largest SD card you can use in these cameras is 32GB. I think the problem is that SD cards bigger than 32GB have a completely different format structure and I don't think the camera software/firmware is setup to utilize those other formats. Also check that it is a Class 10. If it's slower than that, I think you'll have problems also. The good thing is that 32GB Class 10 SD cards are pretty cheap now so just get yourself a few. Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the video for formatting and performing firmware updates. I've been running 32GB SD cards in my cameras for years and I've never filled one up yet... however, I was only taking pictures and not video. This was great for a new camera. My cameras are already in the field and I need to update the firmware. I assume you have to replace the old SD Card with a new one with the new firmware. What happens to the pictures from the old SD card? Do I copy them over to the new card?

    • @strixoutdoors
      @strixoutdoors  Před 3 lety +2

      Gerry, yes - the purpose of the video was to encourage folks to do these updates before setting up their cameras BUT, not all is lost. It seems that Spypoint can actually push the firmware updates to your camera remotely. You'll have to contact Spypoint customer service to do that and provide the camera SIM number and other information. It's a bit risky in my opinion because the firmware update done this way is subject to the cell signal strength that your camera has but I was able to do it successfully to one of my cameras. It did not appear that it affected the pictures on my SD card. If you use a new SD card with the firmware files and perform the update that way just download the pictures on the old SD to your PC and keep them there. Unless you are paying for a scouting package, Spypoint isn't keeping old pictures on the cloud anyway and even with the Scouting packages, those pictures only stay on the cloud for a certain amount of time.

      @@gerrygagnier5947, makes sense Gerry. I had a camera in a similar situation. My thoughts though: if the camera is still working fine then doing the firmware update may not be critical. However, if you feel like it's not functioning properly then I would try to get Spypoint to do the update. The best way I've found to contact them is through the Spypoint website Chat function. By far, the best way to get through and they were able to push the update. Since you have a strong signal then low risk of doing the update this way. The camera data plan is independent of whatever you use for your cell. If you get good signal with ATT in the place you intend to put the camera then get the Spypoint with LTE service. I did NOT know that there was a firmware update that you HAVE to do manually. I checked my cameras (2) before I left my house. Both worked fine. I drove 5 HOURS to check stand, put out corn, and put up my cameras. They both sent a photo of us pouring corn. I am good to go, so I think ............ I get home and 24 hours later neither camera has sent another photo, I look at neither camera has contacted the server since yesterday when we put them up.
    I contacted spypoint via the chat. He was giving me the it isn't working due to firmware, and I needed to do it at home. I explained that I tested it at home, and in the woods, and it worked find. So what happened. He really didn't have an answer, but said that they will push the update from their end.
    They do have the ability to update remotely, yet are NOT doing it. WHY?????????

      @strixoutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Sorry you're going through that. Not sure what I need to do to get CZcams to push this video out so more people can see it BEFORE they set their cameras out. Please give it a thumbs up and hopefully that will help. Are the cameras able to get pretty good cell signal in the areas you deployed them to?
      Yes, Spypoint can do firmware pushes. I'm not sure the exact reasons that they don't do that as a default but I can rationalize that doing so would be a logistical nightmare and would probably cause more issues than it would resolve. Most of the time, the cameras still function without the newest firmware update but that really depends on what the actual changes are on their side. It's a much more controlled process when you do it manually at home. Hopefully they'll get it sorted for you. Cell signal strength can cause a lot of headaches also with your cameras so I hope you have ok signal. If not, you may have to get creative on camera placement or try one of their antenna extensions. My cameras typically run between 25-50% cell signal strength and I don't usually have an issue but if the signal drops down you may not get any pictures until it's able to communicate again. Remember also that the camera won't try to communicate with the Spypoint network unless you restart it OR it reaches the time that you specified for it to transmit photos. I think Spypoint has a way to ping the camera and make it communicate back to the network though. If you set it to transmit 1x day, then you won't likely see any updates on status until after that next scheduled transmission. Depending on some of those settings, you'll have to be patient with the firmware update. It may not be a quick process for it to download and then install. They did the push for one of my cameras and it was a few days before I saw the firmware number updated in the camera status.

I have since ordered energizer platinum lithiums and a 10 series micro sd in hopes somehow that was the issue. Thoughts? • @strixoutdoors
      @strixoutdoors  Před 4 lety +1

      Eric, a couple thoughts about what your describing. Are you looking at the status light? (That’s the one right next to on/off switch inside the battery compartment). Did you double check that you got the AA battery orientation correct for all batteries? Double check that you inserted the battery cartridge the right way into the camera.
      The status light will only turn on when you power the camera on and it’s searching for cell signal. After that, I believe it will turn off.
      I don’t think the slower micro SD would cause the camera to stay off but it is best that you get the correct speed SD. It should turn on with regular alkaline (as long as they are good). I would definitely use the lithium’s when you set it out in the field though. Were you able to connect to the camera using the Spypoint app on your phone? Try turning it on (even if you don’t see the light) and leave it one somewhere in your home where it might take some pictures of you walking by. Try to trigger it multiple times and check the SD card on your computer to see if it’s taking pictures. Let me know if any of those things work.

    • @strixoutdoors
      @strixoutdoors  Před 4 lety +1

      Eric, Thanks for the update! Maybe the alkalines were a little under powered? A little strange but I'm glad you're up and running. I don't think you'll get 3-4 months from the batteries on the Micro, just my guess but depends on a lot of factors. Mine lasted a little over a month but I was using Eneloop rechargeable batteries, camera was taking ~100 pictures/day and transmitting 2x daily. The Eneloops are very, very good rechargeables but not quite the longevity of the platinum lithiums. It will depend on how many pictures it's taking a day and how many times it transmits. The good thing is that you can check on the battery charge % through the app so you might just see how much it draws down in the first week or so and get a better idea. In general, adjust your picture delay settings so you're not getting too many pictures and reduce the transmit frequency to minimal number that gives you the info you need. Also check the Night Mode setting put on "Optimal mode". Good luck!

We are happy to assist you. We checked and found out that the camera has missed many major updates. It is a must that we update the firmware. Please see instructions below and have fresh batteries.
    In order to update the firmware, you will first need to format the micro-SD card, then, follow the below instructions for the update.
    1) How to format an sd card:
    Windows PC:
    Here is a video that will help you: czcams.com/video/26jf1f7CmNE/video.html
    Insert the card in the computer
    Access the Files Explorer (shortcut = press Windows Key+E on your keyboard at the same time)

    Click ‘’Start’’ when ready to format.
    MAC computer:
    Here is a video that will help you: czcams.com/video/A6SJUGtLL4U/video.html
    Insert the SD card in the computer
    Access the ‘’Disk Utility’’ --- You can find it using the ‘’search tool’’ at the top of your screen OR using the FINDER application.
    Find your SD card and select it.
    Click on ‘’Erase’’
    Make sure the setting for ‘’Format’’ is set to : MS-DOS(FAT)
    Click on Security Options and choose one of the following:
    Fastest : is enabled by default and only takes a few seconds
    Most Secure : this is a more secure and thorough procedure (recommended)
    Click on ‘’Erase’’ at the bottom right corner when ready to format.
    2) Updating the firmware version of your camera - Windows and MAC
    Download the update file from our website : www.spypoint.com/en/support/cellular-trail-camera/product-link-micro.html
    Open the downloaded .zip file by double-clicking on it.
    Extract the 5 files from the .zip file.
    Copy the 5 extracted files onto the Micro SD card.
    Eject the Micro SD card from the computer.
    Make sure the camera is turned OFF.
    Insert the Micro SD card into the camera.
    Power ON the camera.
    The camera will run the firmware update by itself for around 90 seconds. («Status» light flashes orange).
    Then, it will turn off for a second. The camera firmware will be up to date.
    The camera will then restart by itself and it will go through the connection process. («Status» light flashes green).
    To confirm the update was successful:
    Upon the next sync of the camera, access the “Status” tab in the SPYPOINT LINK app.
    Under “General Information”, the version number will appear, for example: V1.11.06

    I'm not writing a book on how bad my experience with spypoint was but let it suffice to say I purchased 3 and all 3 worked fine for the first 6 months at which they all 3 quit working . Customer service couldn't function....got nothing resolved...end of story . I will never own another spypoint product again 🖕

      Drew, gladly. I can't send it through these chats on CZcams (CZcams won't allow). Can you please look me up on Instragram of Facebook (StrixOutdoors) and send me a message? I'll send you the email address so you can get the referral code.

    Put it out in the field, stops transmitting the day I set it out. Support tells me to go to it turn it off an on to re established connection. Super inconvenient!!!! Total garbage.

      Yes, tech support is not very helpful unfortunately. Let me try to walk through the issue with you and see if we can't find the culprit. It can often time be something pretty simple. If you like, it may be easier for you to look me up on Instagram and message me that way.. I have Facebook also but looks like there is another Strix Outdoors on FB ( I don't know how that's possible) so you'll have to make sure you reach out to the right one.

    My camera worked great until I updated my firmware. Now it won't even power on!
    Support is a joke dont buy this camera

      Support is lacking.. only way to get them is via Chat and it's hit/miss whether they know technical details about the cameras or not. Something must have gone wrong with the firmware update. Not sure if there is a way to reset the camera to factory default (will have to look) but otherwise I would delete the firmware you downloaded and just go through the whole process again formatting SD, download new firmware, etc. Make sure the camera has full batteries when you do the update.
