Thank you for making your videos; I find them very fascinating and they make learning about our past very easy. I am currently living in Canada but have been searching for some videos on Afro-Canadian and Jamaican Canadian etc I came across your video and I am pleased.
Skin bleaching appears to be a cause of colorism in Jamaica, and it's a shame that some of us mentally bear this responsibility.
We are all Africans who have been forced to flee their homelands across the globe. This is a fascinating subject. I was born and raised in Jamaica, and I am always curious about my country's roots.

Colourism which is an effect from slavery is the cause of skin bleaching among some people in Jamaica, not the other way around

Hi Fayida, this was highly informative and I can tell that you did a lot of research! There are some little known facts that i' d like to share with you🙏
Arawakan is a language. The term Arawaks was applied by colonials and would have been a broad descriptive term encompassing many different ethnic groups. These groups included Lucayans, "Taino", Karibs, Warao and other groups situated along the Orinocco river in South America.
The Taino also did not go extinct, they still practice many of their old ways and still speak Arawakan. They are slowly surfacing again. Jerk chicken is actually one of their inventions.. well actually, both themselves and maroons perfected it, with the Taino's "barbakoa" being the original inspiration.
Many Taino are also Rasta, and as such, they do use Tobacco in varying degrees from time to time
Interesting, I was told my mothers family was cherokee Indian but upon researching my given name I found it is a taino/arawakan word..fascinating!

im from the caribbean and i believe that the black people that live in the caribbean shouldnt be called afro caribbean because if black ppl were there first. white people came up with the name afro caribbean because they believe white founded the caribbean which they didnt. we should be called west indians because the tribes caribs and tainos was on the islands first.

We are west Indians, you just won't see it in history but look at it historically as what @Elshe Spanner said and geographically where we are located. We can't rely on whites to call us what they think we are, we already know who we are; West Indians, Caribbeans, we are all that, without hyphenation‼❤🇯🇲
I'm mixed but have mainly Jamaican heritage. I've known for years of my Chinese, Scottish, Indian & Cuban heritage but never known which African tribe or which country my ancestors came from. I feel like it's the last piece of my puzzle so thanks for this video!

what the one thing reggae and blues have in common, they both tell the stories of a frustrated group of people who are tired of their living standards. the only difference is one is In jamaica and one in America. it's only for the sake of the bible why we ain't seeing black people start rebelling again oh and because of the fear passed down to us. Yes, we are still carrying those fears our ancestors passed down to us even though history has shown that we don't get any changed and less we rebel.
Facts. I always say all my parents did (especially my mother) was instill fear in me. Now we blacks can be so afraid to talk up because from forever times we've been taught to be obedient. It's a horrible thing not being able to speak up because of how you were taught.
There is a lot of misinformation about the languages that contributed to Jamaican Patois, though it is quite understandable given that at one point there wasn't much information available. Having done my own research as well as being an actual speaker of the language, Jamaican Patois was primarily influenced by English, Irish, Scots and Welsh - Irish moreso, as well as various West African languages with Twi being most influential. There are also smaller bits of Taino, Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese. Contrary to what is widely believed, there are no French influences in Jamaican Patois other than the name itself, which was probably taken from the French during their brief occupation before they were driven off, but ironically it is because of the fact that they were driven off before they could colonize the island is why there are no French influences. And there are no influences from German, Chinese, and Syrians being as they came later and thus weren't present among the plantations. They also make up a much smaller percentage of the population.
Marcus Garvey was born in 19th century but he is famous in early 20th century of his UNIA organization during 1916 to 1920s but decline in the 1930s

@@abdurraheemali9303 We have the dna of Al Andalus cattle here from 1510. Jamaica Criollo cattle ended as a breed in 1948. The Jamaica Paso horse helped in the development of the Peruvian Paso breed of today. When you find horses and cattle there is alway a herder or cowboy type person. Spanish Jamaica was from 1494-1665 lot of Moors in Spain did ranching that system came to the Caribbean.

You've done a good job with this video (and others). However, there is a significant error at 3:53. What was abolished in 1807 was the slave trade; not slavery. The British parliament made it illegal to kidnap Africans and transport them to be sold into slavery in the Americas. Parliament did not make it illegal to hold Africans in bondage. That did not happen until 1838.

I'm very happy about our Pan Africanism, in Jamaica its not perfect I know, but it's much better than other western Countries that seeks to cleans there population of blacks instead of embracing it eg. Brazil, Argentina, the great USA and Canada to a lesser extent, there are Caribbean Countries that embrace this type of thinking too eg. the Present PM of Trinidad&Tobaga Dr Kieth Rowlwy was said to be too black to become PM during the reign of former PM Kamala Persad Bissessar of Indian descent, in Jamaica, many people of Indian descent considers themselves black eg. popular Reggae DJ. Super Cat, there are others too who recognized there blackness proudly despite being of mixed race the Marley's for eg. starting with Bob himself, I do not condone skin bleaching, but those who does it, does not deny their Afro Origin, Jamaica has been unfairly targeted for this phenomenon, since it's hugely popular in man Countries especially India, Africa, S America, and the USA. EG check any Artist before and after of Afro origin in the USA especially the females like say Beyoncé, Rihanna, who we know is Bajan, but very much enshrined into the American culture.

I hate the term "afro-Jamaican" there is no such thing. The proper term is "Caribbean, West Indian or Black-Jamaican". I grew up I Jamaican and NEVER heard this term. Jamaicans do not refer to themselves as such.
Hi there, I agree the term Afro Jamaican isn't commonly used, it's just that in this YT series I go by country and speak on the history and contribution of communities specifically of African descent. So you will see on my channel that other titles include Afro China or Afro United Kingdom for example, even those these terms aren't used, to emphasise that I am speaking about the Afrodescendant population in thise countries. I'm sorry to hear you hate it but I hope you can understand the context for using the term and that I fully acknowledge its limitations.

It's actually a fact not a movement that enslaved black people all over the world are in fact descendants of the 12 lost tribes of Israel. If you read Deuteronomy there were blessing for Israel if we kept the laws of God and curses if we didn't. We are the only group of people that are suffering from the curses to a T.

There is no racistism in Jamaica today I am a Jamaican who live in Jamaica you got that wrong.
What we have is colorism/classism.
As non black population increases in Jamaica, so do racism. It’s not that we don’t have racism, it’s that most of Jamaicans are black and there is not enough non black to uphold it. During interactions with these non black group which is rarely, you will see different types of it.
You sure all slaves were "African"? The slaves may have come from Africa but not all "Black" slaves were "African", a huge population were descendants of "Black/Negro" American Indians brought to Africa as slaves or indentured servants then later then or their offsprings were transported back to the Americas as slaves or indentured servants as "African Cargo". A large population of slaves and indentured servants were American Indians from now called Central America & South America (Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil etc). Prior to European colonization the completion & other phenotypes of American Indians from North Canada down to south Chile were more similar to those of African decent or like the Aboriginals living in various parts of the world. Books in the Smithsonian, old published books from the early 1700s to late 1800s describe encountering American Indians once arriving in the Americas as near looking Africans and similar stores of Moore's in Europe. Yes, most Jamaicans have African ancestry but not everyone is a 100% descendant of the African slave trade the way most leaned it. An immigration or emigration story for an individual can be very unique. The only way to truly know "Your" background is to do genealogy research on your family going back at least a minimum of four generations (great-great-great-great grandparents) using official government documents like birth & death records, marriage records, census records, voting records etc. Don't let anyone tell you who you are if you haven't proven to yourself who who are or where infact your parents came from. Everyday, someone is migrating to another country for work or escaping hardship or forcefully.
Well actually. Main reason they said that Natives look African was to make the general population think of Native people of less than. African people were looked down and hated. It would be much easier to hate someone who you never seen before but got a general idea of how they looked, when a WHITE man tells you how they look. Which was African. Easier to hate. Same goes for paintings done then, they purposely made them look more African, so people would think of Native peoples as no more than savage beasts that need to die. Most if not all history from then has been fabricated to fit the desire of white man's conquest and colonialist ideas. Easier to kill, enslave and conquer people of color when the mostly white general population has no sympathy for the conquered.
