Earlier in the clip if you rewind he actually killed a hyena. So he's not being cocky or arrogant, perhaps he feels accomplished from defending his surroundings and his kill. One of the things i learned from researching the Serengeti is that hyenas will actually steal food from lions and even kill their cubs! The lion surely had this in mind when he attacked that hyena. Just like me and you, we have to eat food in order to survive, go to work, move about the various different rooms inside of our homes and such forth. Although we don't ever worry about having our cubs killed (we are humans), lions do because when they give birth they have cubs which are like lions only small and pretty much helpless. In a cuteness competition a cub can be incredibly powerful but hyena's have no respect for those accolades. In fact they detest it because their babies are nowhere near as attractive. Some amateur researchers (myself) speculate that these are killings of jealousy over their vanity.

I hate it when people compare animals like "that animal would beat that animal". You could say that this species has a higher probability of beating the other species, but that is in nearly all cases obvious.
I could say a guinea pig can kill a lion, if it somehow manages to crawl up its butthole and constipate it so badly that it dies from it.
