  • At 6,288 feet in elevation, Mount Washington is the highest mountain in New Hampshire and in the northeastern United States.
    Part of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, Mount Washington reaches well into the alpine zone and is home to what some consider the world’s worst weather. The mountain is often shrouded in clouds with weather that’s more reminiscent of areas of the arctic far to the north.
    While the weather wasn’t great for our climb, it wasn’t that bad either with temperatures in the 50s and 60s and winds in the 30mph range. For the most part we were hiking in the clouds once we reached the alpine zone, but we did have occasional views as the clouds would blow out. By the end of the hike, the clouds were definitely lifting and we could see the climb we had just made.
    We were joined on the hike by our friends David and Paul, the Oklahomo Hikers (‪@OklahomoHiker‬) here on CZcams (bit.ly/3rTkLQr). This was their introduction to northeastern hiking and it was also Moe’s birthday, so we decided to go big with a Mount Washington climb!
    To make the best of the bad weather and take what we consider to the be the most mellow route up and down Mount Washington we ascended via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to Appalachian Mountain Club’s Lakes of the Cloud Hut. At the Hut, the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail ends, and we joined the Crawford Path to the summit of Mount Washington. From the summit, we descended on the Gulfside Trail to the Jewell Trail, which we descended down to the Cog Train base station and back to the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trailhead parking where we started.
    Our total hike was 10.4 miles with 3,947 feet of elevation gain.

    We’re hiking Mt Washington for Memorial Day weekend, we want to do this same loop and bring our Lab along. We’re hoping she’ll fare well with the rocky parts but we might get her some hiking boots.

    • @HikerTrashHusbands
      @HikerTrashHusbands  Před 3 měsíci

      For the most part she should be good. There might be some spots, especially along the Ammonoosuc Trail where you might have to give her a boost up. Coming down Jewel is pretty rocky/boulderly before it gets down to treeline and you’ll want to keep an eye on her. Booties might help keep her pads safe.

    That's a fine loop. I did Ammo for the first time in April but there was still plenty of snow on the ground. Didn't realize how rocky it is! I think that's a great weather day for Mt. Washington - sporty conditions on the way up but then clear skies on the way down.

    • @HikerTrashHusbands
      @HikerTrashHusbands  Před 3 lety +1

      It is rocky! It’s our go to loop for intros to the mountain. Nothing too technical or scary, but plenty of leg pumping, get to see a hut, and when the clouds do blow out it has amazing views.

  • @ChrisBakerauthor

    In 1934, they recorded a wind gust of 231 mph. This was a world record at the time.
    Considering all the fog, I really wonder if Mount Washington is worth it. You can't see anything up there.

    • @HikerTrashHusbands
      @HikerTrashHusbands  Před rokem

      Yup, along with plenty of windy, cloudy, cold and otherwise not terribly pleasant, and sometimes dangerous weather. Hence the moniker of the "worst weather in the world," for Mount Washington.
      We think a hike up is always worth it - more times than not Mt. Washington is in the clouds, but as happened on this trip, the clouds blow out from time to time and you're treated the stunning views. By the time we were descending on the Jewell Trail, still above treeline, it was almost a complete blue sky and made for an amazing trek down.

    Love the video! I just completed the hike last Saturday for the first time. The weather was perfect all the way up. Blue sky and great views. The train down was my only option. :)

      Anahata that is the way I do it now since I'm a senior citizen. I hike up Ammo to hut, next day hike the summit, take train down. Or reverse it. I have done hike up and down so don't feel the need to again. My old lady body would be very upset with me the next day or two!!

      We had to be sure we got them to see as much as possible while they were here and we couldn’t think of anything better than Washington. It all worked out perfectly! Can’t wait to have them back for more adventures - but it’s our turn to head their way next and they’ve got some stuff in western OK lined up for us.

  • @roxannegordon2854

    I love the sounds of the mountains! No music allows us to hear it. Can you show the trail and talk at the same time? If you strap the camera to your chest like my husband (and I) does you have hands free to show us the trail even if it is foggy. I've been on this trail up Ammo, down Jewell but it was 9 years ago. I'd like to see if there is anything different besides the foliage getting taller. We also went across the river to the cog railway parking lot since we parked there, but further down Jewell, about half a mile or less, the trailhead is directly across the street.
    You did well to go that far in the fog and slick rock up Ammo. And there are a LOT of photos for your family album.

      We love Mount Washington and the rest of the Whites. Feel so lucky to be able to be up there as much as we can be. The loop in this video is the one we use to introduce new folks to the presidentials and the Whites - it’s always an experience no matter the conditions.
      Glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for the suggestions. Hope you check out the rest of our videos from the White Mountains (czcams.com/play/PL0yvxNj-zYS7QFBNwLcryMlajvzEfsb17.html) and beyond!

    U never hike in sandals, especially Mt Washington...I hiked it several times, it wasn't so washed out back then.. best time is end of June and all of July.
    I always had great weather.. I never used poles.

      Hike your own hike and to each their own. Moe’s hiked more miles in sandals specifically designed for hiking then most people do in their life.

    How long of a day is that? Are the trails well market for the beginner? Thanks and great video

    • @HikerTrashHusbands
      @HikerTrashHusbands  Před 2 lety +5

      This was roughly a 12 hour day, but we did spend time at the hut and at the summit in the summit lodge (which are good rest stops and just interesting places too). Trails are well marked below treeline and then above treeline there’s plenty of signage and cairns along the way to keep you on trail. This is definitely the route up and down Mt Washington for a beginner.
      If Amonoosuc looks too intense for you, I’d suggest just going up and down the Jewell Trail. The video should give you a good idea of the ascent on Amonoosuc, which is steep and rocky, but not technical (at least during the summer months).

    We drove up Mt. Washington in the summer many, many years ago in a lite rain and at the top it was like a blast of winter and people who walked up like these guys Beg us to take them down in our car but we had no room in our car to do it. Many many people have died on Mt. Washington I would believe it is well over two hundred have died by now if not over 300 hundred.
    If you plan to claim Mt. Washington be prepared to lose your life, because it can easily happen!
    Good luck!

      @HikerTrashHusbands  Před 2 lety

      Mount Washington is definitely not a mountain to be taken lightly or fool around with. We always make sure we're prepared for climbs like this and made sure that our friends were also prepared. No taking chances on these mountains!!

      Norman I've been on all these trails in this video and sandals??? Not recommended. Once slip, twisted ankle and you are screwed! There is no way to get back down by hopping on one foot, really scary situation. I had a scary ankle situation coming down Zealand trail, a walk in the park compared to this hike and I was in agony hopping on one foot.

    • @ChrisBakerauthor
      @ChrisBakerauthor Před rokem

      You wouldn't want to add the extra weight to your car anyway. That is the scariest drive I've ever had.
