    That sucks it is running near the Power Box. Love that you use the terms we used when I worked for COX. Plant -> Ped -> Tap -> Demarcation -> Ground Block. Bad ground. I use to use Uneven Splitters (Tap Splitters) So that the Cable Modem had the least dBmv drop because internet is usually on the highest frequency.

    My recommendation is to see where all the wires go like from the ground block into the splitter and see where the outlets go or where the TV boxes are and just clean that up a little and also maybe redo all the wiring from the outside but don't cut off the wires that are going into the inside too like the TVs and the Internet modem maybe redo Paul that and put it in one box and then put it in one splitter something like that so it's not all those two mess if you know what I'm saying or meaning for an example you can have the ground block and then a wire going to a date way and then having it go to all your Outlets I don't know if that works by the way I'm using voice text to speech

    i did not know it could only be split once before getting to the modem. this was helpful. my internet is supposed to be 50mbps and i'm only getting about 10 - 20 at best. I think it splits a couple times before it gets to the modem so maybe that's why. i'll have to check. are those barrel connectors ok as long as it doesn't split? thanks.

    • @stupididiot2199
      @stupididiot2199 Před 5 lety +5

      No that’s not how it works lol. Being split does not mean splitting your speed before getting to your modem cause in the DOCSIS standard your signal has many different frequencies it can take so splitting it will just direct your own frequencies in the cable to the split one. There’s a reason why we can still use a type a cable made in the 1880s. Because these are analog signals you can have many different frequencies on the wire. Just search up how this stuff works and don’t listen to this guy. I don’t think he’s qualified to talk about this stuff. If you know anyone who is an electrical engineer just ask them because they learn about this stuff in college.

    • @D.AGE.
      @D.AGE. Před 4 lety +1

      Negative sir, you need a qualified technician with proper equipment. If theres more than one splitter leave them. Lot of times splitters are used to balance the levels coming into your home. Theres 3.5, 5.5, 7.5, 6, 8, 9, 2.5 splitters.
      We may use any combination of this if you're levels need to be dropped by say 12 dbmv. If you remove a splitter your levels may ski rocket and completely cut your internet off

    • @D.AGE.
      @D.AGE. Před 4 lety

      If you have slow speeds call your internet provider. Most slow speeds are caused by a bad connector, line or levels need to be adjusted.
      Unless you have a docsis meter and are aware of your areas system qualifications do not mess with it or you night be charge for customer damage.

      @@stupididiot2199 splitters take off db so yes they split signal. They split off 3.5-7 db depending on what spot you use or if it’s a 2,3 or 4 way. You always want the modem off the -3.5db on a 2 way or a 3 way so it doesn’t loose to much. Cable tv can run in low negative db where modems need at least 2-3db

    Quick question to you all. I have the box for cable outside my house. It only has one line coming from the box to my downstairs room. Then there is a splitter, where it hooks up to my wifi. Can I hook up my coaxial cable to that splitter to use it for my cable tv? Or, do I have to have another coaxial cable to go to another splitter for my cable tv?

    • @aikimike
      @aikimike  Před 4 lety

      You could hook the coaxial cable to the splitter and get tv, might have problems getting all channels in well depending on signal strength. If you do a service call cable tech could charge you a fee for install, so beware. But if that is the only line coming in your house and you split it once for tv and internet that is ideal config.

    That is really a sloppy installation with cables running around the outside of the house. One cable should go from the NID to the attic with splitter(s) and branch cabling in the attic.

    • @bogieman101
      @bogieman101 Před 2 lety

      Or crawlspace, which I prefer. If an installer tried to pull a sloppy job like this, he would be on his way. One outside box, located at utility entry to attach to house ground. Drill hole into crawl space, mount box over hole so house cable feeds into crawlspace out of sight through back of NID (I drill hole big enough to tap plastic pipe into brick for cable to pass through. Seal with anytype of sealant. And for God's sake seal holes in NID so critters (spiders/wasps) can't get in. Makes a neat clean install.
      I would rather have splitters all in NID personally,with extra cable slack in crawlspace, but definitely not like this video.

    Modem stands for Modulation / Demodulation. Since the Internet does not involve any sort of modulation, therefore there is no modem involved. What your house has is an Ethernet Terminal Adapter (TA) or router.
    Yes, I know some Internet Service Providers refer to various devices as "modems" but that is only because they think consumers are too dumb to learn something new. So they stick with the term for outdated hardware.

    • @antonioterrell354
      @antonioterrell354 Před 3 lety +5

      What do you mean?
      An actual cable Modem (for "Modulator/Demodulator") is used and necessary in the home to translate the baseband ethernet data to RF signals and vice-versa, to communicate over RF cable channels with the CATV headend using one of the DOCSIS standards.
      A router is connected to a modem by ethernet cable or when integrated in with the modem it is then popularly called a "gateway."

    @brad885 Před 4 lety +9

    🤣🤣 you probably have a bad drop. When it was installed, the setup was probably fine. As fittings/wire oxidize, your signal degrades. 3.5db is the loss per split, not the "magic number for your modem". Ped typically comes out 10-15 db. With a 35 return. Assuming 10db at the tap, 3db of line loss over that distance on rg6, and 9db max on the splits (3.5+5.5 for a balanced) your signal at install should be -2db with a 44db return. Well within spec. Which...means your lines are probably bad. Get a cable meter and find out though.

    @scottypitts7679 Před 6 lety +17

    The most confusing part of this video is "why did you make it?". You did not show anyone how to "fix your internet cable modem".
    1. The "like a ground connector" is called a grounding block.
    2. Yours is not grounded, the wire is left dangling, which will cause worse signal than without a block all together.
    3. Grounding a Coax line has nothing to do with lightning or power surges. it has to do with dissipating the waves outside of the cable that are caught by the shielding in the coax cable. If you read the spec sheets on coax cables you will see that the only purpose of the shielding is to protect the center conductor from interference.
    4. As a former cable guy your set-up should be allot more organized than that. It would have been better if you had talked about signal loss over distance of cable and then the db drop of each splitter and how it affects the signal.
    5. I am not trying to troll you, but if you are going to write any form of "How- To" you should be allot more knowledgeable than you are. Most of the information I just gave you is from a Crutchfield Home A/V manual from 2000. This is not new information.

      Right! With it dangling it basically acts as an antennae to pickup whatever stray electromagnetic waves might happen to be around.

      As long as the coaxial cable shield is intact from the signal source to the signal receiver, it will function as designed. There is no need to connect it to earth ground (which is what a grounding block is for) for the purpose "dissipating the waves outside of the cable that are caught by the shielding in the coax cable"--connecting it to the signal source and signal receiver's internal grounds are all that is necessary, and that is done as soon as the coax is properly connected with an F, BNC, N, KS, or whatever other type connector is being used.
      It is, however, necessary to connect the coaxial cable shield to earth ground (which is usually accomplished with a ground block) because it is mandatory per National Electric Code (NEC) rules. But wait..it can't be connected to just ANY earth ground, it has to be connected to the building's earth ground, that same earth ground that connects to the electrical panel's neutral/ground bus. I've seen many old cable TV installations where a separate ground rod was driven just for the cable TV line, with the ground block connected to that separate ground rod. Those installations are not and never were compliant with NEC rules unless the separate ground rod was actually connected with a 6AWG or larger wire to the building's earth ground. Since those ground rods were always driven because it wasn't convenient to connect the ground block to the building's earth ground, of course that never happened.
      So why does the NEC mandate that the coaxial cable shield be connected to earth ground, and not just any earth ground, but the one that's connected to the building's electrical panel?
      Because the NEC aims to prevent a situation where the coaxial cable shield could be energized by a fault and present an electrocution/shock hazard. Such a fault could arise inside the building, such as a faulty TV that puts 120V on the F connector. Or outside the building, such as a broken 7.2kV primary wire falling onto the cable TV hardline and energizing it.
      Were the coaxial cable shield not grounded, then every place where the coaxial cable shield is exposed becomes a shock hazard in the event of a fault. Things like splitters and F connectors become energized with deadly voltage.
      But if the coaxial cable shield is grounded TO THE BUILDING GROUND, then there is a low-impedance path to ground which will result in one of two things happening:
      1)An overcurrent protection device (circuit breaker) will trip, which is likely in the event of a faulty TV energizing the coax shield.
      2)The coaxial cable will burn open, which is likely in the event of a broken 7.2kV primary wire energizing the hardline.
      In either case, the internal coaxial wiring is prevented from becoming energized.
      But this can only work if there is a low impedance path to ground. Simply driving a ground rod and connecting the coax to it does not provide a low-impedance path to ground. It takes a low-impedance path to ground to pass sufficient current to trip a breaker or cause a coaxial cable to burn open--and that is provided by using the building's ground, that which is connected to the building's electrical service, meter, load center, breaker panel.

      @brianleeper5737 Před 6 lety +1

      Should also mention that grounding requirements are also for fire protection. A coax shield that's energized due to a fault is as much of a fire hazard as it is a shock hazard. In the case of a 7.2kV fault, the ground block ensures that the cable will burn between the tap and the ground block, all of which is exterior to the house. If the ground block wasn't installed, that 7.2kV will find another path to ground inside the house (probably through a cable box or cable modem), almost definitely causing a fire in the process.

    1st off the ped you zoomed in on is a phone Ped ...they also use cables to attatch service........what you shouldnt do is fuck with any of the Connections, Grounding or splitters found in a service Box.......in theory yes you would like the modem line to only lose 3.5db but If you dont know what your signal is to begin with then the modem is proably screaming ....to much signal, possibly a fucked up Return to go along

    1) splits are irrelevant. What is important is what quality and quantity of signal gets to the modem. Sometimes you have to run signal through a few splitters to get signal strength down and return number up. The general advice of running a line from first split to modem is only true if signal supports it. Home run lines to one place is always better but rarely set up that way especially in older homes.2) ground is unhooked. (And therefore doing nothing). Has little to do with lightning. Lightning if close goes right on through and blows up your electronics ($20 surge protectors are likewise useless to stop close lightning)3) cable owns everything up to house box. Customer owns all from there in. 4). The house in this vid is a cable mess. The input on the two way is a hand-tight cable designed only for end equipment. The rest looks like trash.5). How did this vid fix cable modem?

    • @aikimike

      I agree with you on several points, this was just a walk down of system not in use, also if the signal is to high then maintenance tech needs to be notified to fix, not put a bunch of splitter to fix it.

      @@aikimike nah we routinely use splitters and to get signal within spec. Been to places with signal so good you could split it 20 times and it wouldn't matter. Maintenance doesn't come out unless there's a mer/ber failure, hum on line, or docsis fail at tap.

    • @devonsykes2598
      @devonsykes2598 Před rokem

      Splitters are very relevant. Splitters take off 3.5 to 7 db they can cause low signal or help us get it into spec

    • @imperialraiden8259
      @imperialraiden8259 Před 7 měsíci

      @@aikimikeThe signal at the pole is what it is (considering there are no impairments). In some areas signal is very high and needs to be split at the house in order for it to be within standards that's just how the plant is built. And, the closer your house is to the amplifier at the pole, the higher the signal. And it has to be that way so by the time the signal hits another amplifier many many poles down, signal is good enough to amplify it again. If it's too high, Maintenance will laugh if you call in most circumstances. There are a few times when signal is too high and is messing stuff up... very rare.

    Hold up so ho every installed your service did a terrible job. The underground cable should have been feed to the main area. Now you have cable all over your house lol. That fence would of been easy to get that cable under even no it may of been a bit of a pain I would never do a install like that lol. Anyway this is stuff you don't need to mess with and if anything a teck would fix anything lose. I Don't think anyone learned anything hear lol. It's 2022 many of us understand. Got some old cable their. You definitely need to new boxes on your home you should never have these in those boxes. Basically the ones Comcast has that I have seen them use on mini houses are completely closed and the only part at the bottom of it is to where they can run the cable up into it
