The Monterey Bay Aquarium Has a Secret

  • There was so much I wasn't able to tell you. Like, for example, most of the jellyfish on display at the aquarium are born and bred at the aquarium. They do active research on jellyfish breeding, which is a finicky thing, and every species has completely different needs. They also don't just grow the jellyfish, they have huge tanks of algae that they feed to the tiny animals that the jellyfish eat. I guess I should have known that jellyfish are predators, but I don't think I did!
Also...Mola mola are WILD! I need to make a whole video about them. JAY! IT'S A BABY WHALE!

vlogbrothers The “most” qualifier is SO TRUE; even home aquarium hobbyists have to learn about a bunch of not-so-friendly organisms. Bristle worms are a pretty gnarly example - they get 10’+ (3m+) long and can bore through rock! Seeing their interactions with all the “good guys” too, like micro-crustaceans/invertebrates, isopods, copepods, etc. It’s like collecting Pokémon IRL!
It’s such an amazing hobby, as it combines chemistry, biology, ecology, and so much more. Incredible learning experience!

In middle school my science teacher showed us Monterey Bay’s kelp forest web cam as an example of a biome. I returned to that site repeatedly to watch and eventually found the otter cam as well! After haggling with my parents to let my computer time coincide with the otter and kelp forest feeding times I set alarms on my watch and basically spent the entirety of my summer tuning in to watch. While I have never physically been to Monterey Bay aquarium, it holds a tender place in my heart and this video was an awesome look at it. Thank you!

About every year, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has a Free Resident week, where people who live in the area can get in for free. My favorite thing to do, is go to the Open Ocean exhibit, take a seat on the second floor benches, and just chill for a while. I’ve been in that aquarium almost every year of my life, been all up and down the both floors and both buildings, and I still manage to take at least 30 photos every time I go. Because, no matter how jaded I might be about the rest of my life, I can always find something beautiful and incredible there, something that inspires wonder and intrigue. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve grinned like an idiot watching the penguins hop around, or inadvertently let my mouth drop open while craning my neck to see the very top of that kelp forest exhibit during a feeding. I’m glad you got to experience this place, and the rest of Monterey’s ocean, and I thank you for helping me enjoy it all over again through someone else’s eyes.

Well, I am a fan, if I may gush! Your work has profoundly influenced my research up at the Monteray bay aquarium, on the sea snake. I've been bitten forty three... seven. Hundred times. Mostly on the face. A lot of this has been reconstructed. I think they did one heck of a job, even if my moustache is... a TAD askew...

If you're ever in the area again, Hank, I'd suggest checking it out. MBARI does a lot of fantastic biological and geological research using the latest robotic and autonomous technologies.

Thank you Hank for making this video! The Monterey Bay Aquarium is dolphin-ately one of the best places on earth. I had the privilege to attend some of their middle school programs, then volunteer there in high school, and now work there! While the public facing parts of the aquarium are magical, the behind the scenes engineering and science of it all is just as marvelous. My only complaint is that you visited a few weeks before I began working- next time maybe come check out our new education building!

This felt so retro, like I was watching your family's home videos, like I was transported back to some of the original vlogbrothers content with slightly shaky cameras and blurry images and bad focusing, and I'm not quite sure if it was because a slight percentage of the video was below average quality for you, or if it was because we saw Katherine and you talked as though you were talking directly to me (the audience member) as an individual, or because aquariums are so intensely linked in my memory to my childhood that it just reminds me of that time period. Regardless, it was an immensely enjoyable video. Thank you.

I actually lived no more then 2 miles from the Monterey Bay Aquarium my entire life. Every year there would be a field trip there from elementary to high school, and when I went to local summer clubs, they'd take us there for trips too. Honestly knew most of this stuff due to the fact that you learn a lot of this going to the Aquarium as much as I did but it's so surreal to see something I'm so familiar with be shown on the vlogbrothers. I could probably map out the entire video in my head of where Hank went. I know that Coco restaurant in the first 2 seconds of the video is no more then maybe 2-3 blocks from the aquarium.

I used to work for a robotics company that made underwater robots for science/discovery (and some military) applications, and we built a vehicle for MBARI while I was there.
Every time anything came up for MBARI a little light inside of me started to glow, because while we did a bunch of stuff that was cool, much of it was for oil companies or military. And while making an EOD robot to blow up WW2 mines is a life saving endeavor, it was still predicated on war, and while Phoenix was used to help find Malaysian airliners, it was invented to help a really rich guy go search for buried treasure. And the countless other vessels were designed to either locate or mine oil, which is not pleasant to think about.
However, with MBARI, I always knew that we were building a tool to enhance our understanding of the largest, and arguably most important ecosystem on the planet. And whether they were tracking migration patterns or researching ecosystems or simply getting stock footage for their demo reels inside, whatever they were doing was going to be net positive, and help advance humans and animals alike.
So it was these little bursts of awesome that helped me get through much of my days there. I had a lot of emotional struggle with every oil-company-based project we were doing, but I had to keep reminding myself that we were also saving lives, and researching ecosystems that might otherwise still be alien to much of humanity.
One of these days I’ll visit MBA, and maybe I’ll spot a video on a monitor with a yellow torpedo looking robot in it, and know firsthand that I actually did something worthwhile in my tenure there.
(PS- I ran the inventory systems and the kitting/S&R teams, so I have no engineering or technical information, but I most likely had my hand on nearly every part of everything we ever built while I was there!)

Can we pause to have an open and honest discussion about the pros/cons of aquariums in general? I understand that many aquariums do great work in educating the public about the importance of marine preservation, and serve to inspire youth in particular.
However, even aquariums of far higher quality than most are motivated by profit at the end of the day. I do not believe they always have the best interest of the animals in mind, as evidenced by the fact that the Monterey Bay Aquarium has kept and led to the death of at least one great white shark in the past - czcams.com/video/QMbHLF_zwjs/video.html

    • @herranton
      @herranton Před 5 lety

Millions, if not billions of dogs have died in captivity. Same with cats. Recently, my shrimp tank crashed and all five shrimp died.
GW sharks are notoriously difficult to keep in captivity. The MB aquarium kept one alive the longest. GW sharks are on the decline. Yes, it is due to humans, but not the MB aquarium. If we want these creatures to survive long term, it might be important that we keep know how to them in tanks.
The world isn't perfect. Maybe it should be, but it isn't. If you want to complain about that, then do so. But there is no discussion about keeping endagered things to be had. We NEED figure it out. The people running/working at the aquarium share your concerns and are infinitely more knowledgeable than you about them.
The fact that it is for profit just means there is more money. I wouldn't doubt that the for profit salt water aquarium industry has done more yo advance the understanding of reefs than the entire scientific community. Why? Sheer size.
And once your car's exhausted, your hot water showers and your power to run the device you are on now cause the oceans to warm and the reefs to die, you will still be able to enjoy them at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
