- Once upon a time, a bunch of kids decided that there was a vampire in the Glasgow Necropolis and went on a bit of a mad one trying to hunt it down.

Remember, kids, always ask a grown up before you arm yourself to go vampire hunting
Someone should definitely make a horror film based on this story, where the adults don't believe the kids that the vampires are real, so they have to team up together to fight evil. A sort of Scottish 1950's take on The Lost Boys or It. Except with feral Weegie kids kicking the shite out of the undead. It'd be great.
Best movie summary I've heard in a long time. I'd 100% watch that!
@@ghostsoc You deserve more views. This is a nice little channel about fun spooky places.
the red glow would be from "Dixon's Blazes".
Firstly, the incident took place at the SOUTHERN Necropolis which is located in the Gorbals area. Not the original one in the city centre by the Cathedral. Secondly, BBC Scotland did an excellent documentary about this for the Radio Scotland service. A rumour had got up around local children that a 'vampire with iron teeth' was lurking in the cemetery. A young PC was shocked to be confronted with the sight of several hundred children, some armed with kitchen knives and other weapons at the gates of the Southern Necropolis. At the time, some campaigners believed this was due to adult horror comics from America being sold to children in Glasgow. These cheap reprints were retailed by people who didn't understand that in the US, comics were sold to the adult market and wrongly assumed they were something along the lines of Scotland's own Beano or Dandy. The result was that rules were brought in and the horror comics were withdrawn from sale to minors. In the years since, some have claimed that this 'moral panic' was unjustified. However, researchers at BBC Scotland did find that a comic featuring 'The Vampire with The Iron Teeth' was being reprinted in the UK and would have been available at the time. Frankly, if you wanted a good scare in Glasgow, either try spitting on the floor of a bus and tram and feel the wrath of Glasgow Corporation Conductress or go to Cleopatra's Nightclub (Clatty Pats) when the nurses from the Western Infirmary are in for a night out!
Thanks for clearing that up - I did wonder about the distance while researching this! And thanks for these details too. Perhaps I'll revisit this story in a future video...
@@ghostsoc That's okay, I loved the one about Cumbernauld by the way. In addition to the original Necropolis in the city centre and the Southern in the Gorbals, there's also the Eastern Necropolis on London Road. Hope I didn't come across as a Smart Erse (To coin a Glasgow Phrase). Suggestion, what about a video about the mansion houses which used to be in Govan before being demolished in the early 20th century to make way for workers' housing?
@@MorristheMinor Not at all - I love getting comments like this, as they help me get a more complete picture. And that's a great suggestion. Will look into it - I definitely want to do more videos in and about Glasgow sometime soon!
The comic book prohibition was a campaign by CPGB which the government fell for.
