That looks very similar to the Rivergate Centre in Irvine!
Great video! I LOVE Glasgows subway ❤❤
Me too!
What a colossal waste of money by the Catholic church, who should be required to offset the carbon footprint of this piece of architectural excrement.
I went today! I stood in the stone circle in the most haunted vault, but I stepped out the same way I stepped in , so we’re cool 🤣👻
Phew!
Spooky stories are fun, but it’s important to remember that they are nothing more than fiction. And anyone who has seen what they claim is a ghost are extremely ignorant of just how frequently human beings hallucinate, and how frequently our senses misinterpret things and momentarily create an image in our minds. For the record, I adore ghost stories, I actually collect them, particularly from the Victorian era. But I don’t for one second genuinely believe in ghosts. It’s fun to pretend, to even spook ourselves with ‘what if’?s. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and so far we have less than no evidence for ghosts. None.
I wonder if it's the atmosphere in the Vaults that attracts so many ghost stories. I know I was convinced once that I saw something down there... only to later realise it was an oddly-shaped lamp!
How do your videos not get so many more views. They are excellent. Well made, I'm enjoying the content.
I've been wondering that myself! Thanks for watching!
Just mentioned to the teenager I'd like a tour of this place for father's day so hopefully be going soon. We watched Threads together after your video as I hadn't seen it and she likes horror movies...cheers!
Amazing - hope you enjoy it... and that Threads didn't leave you too traumatised!
@@ghostsoc we both fair enjoyed threads so thanks for the quality daddy daughter time. Looking forward to the nuclear bunker tour next month.
Crakin job🍻
Thank you!
Really good video as always. I’m fascinated by old nuclear bunkers. We really did think that the bomb would be dropped and we would all die back in the 70s and 80s. The fact we spent all this money on all these bunkers and the infrastructure for them shows we didn’t just take it as an idle threat. Since the 90s we have thought less about nuclear war and forgotten these amazing buildings so thanks for sharing
They really are quite amazing... and all over the country, too. I'm hoping to explore at least a few more in the future!
So glad I found this channel, love the content. Fascinated about this bunker, never knew about it. My ears picked up when you said it's open for tours. Might need to drag my fiancé along for a visit.
You definitely should - it's such a fun and fascinating place to explore!
One of my favourite films!
I have never believed in ghosts or the supernatural, but there is one thing that has happened to me I cannot explain, as I was taking the tour in the vaults, I briefly saw to the right side of my eye, a man in a brown tweed suit and top hat, walking across the hallway far down very swiftly and he was very prim proper and straight as he walked. To this day I cant explain what that was, because it was too vivid to be a trick of light to me!
Get back to work, number one.
Now that's interesting. Fits the description of things that other people have seen for sure!
@@ghostsoc Its put a big bump in my Logic that's for sure, and I just don't know how to Rationalise it, it was just a little TOO vivid in my opinion! If it was a ghost, wonder who it may have been!
Me and my wife did the vaults tour. She took a few photos and ended up with one that looked like she had captured a floating Skull! Sadly shes changed phones and the photo doesn't exist anymore!
Now THAT is spooky!
Wait Glasgow has a subway?
It's little, but it's there!
There's also a suburban railway network (part of the "normal" railway rather than a separate system), part of which runs underground through the city centre.
Great video review of a great film. I do find Threads the best (imo) on this subject as its gritty and chilling. The American version "The Day After" is worth a watch but think it gives false hopes of society surviving to an extent afterwards and "Where the wind blows" is also great but focuses on just the couple not society as a whole. Really enjoying this channel, keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching. And agreed about "The Day After". I recall reading an article about how the director of Threads was kind of annoyed by how positive a spin that film put on things!
very nice short docu. loved the picture of the exposed st enoch square, need more like that :)
Glad you liked it!
I went a couple years back with my family and we all experienced something. I heard whispering in my ear at one point but i couldn't make it out. My mother and my sister both heard a little girl laughing which me and my father didn't, although another lady who was on the tour did. And my father went into the stone circle and ended up having 3 scratches appear on his arm
That's interesting! It's not on every tour that someone in the group has the courage to step into the circle. And every time I've been and someone has... nothing has happened yet!
Replaying old fairy tales on film doesn't make them more credible.
Indeed!
I have never seen it but i will have to go check it out now
I'd say "enjoy"... but with Threads that's probably not quite the right word!
I really thought this was a huge channel with a million subscribers after seeing the video concept and execution. I'm shocked after seeing only 150 views
Haha - thanks! We're growing slowly but surely...
Having seen "Threads" I still think "Where the Wind Blows" is more affective. I found "Threads" too extreme to take seriously, whereas "Where the Wind Blows" tells a simple and very human story in a very touching way.
When The Wind Blows is absolutely devastating stuff - definitely a rival to Threads as far as nuclear horror stories go!
The government were well aware that there was no way the majority would survive a nuclear way, things like "Protect and Survive" and the American "Duck and Cover" campaign were simply a way to try to reassure the public so they did not unduly worry about something they had no realistic way to avert or ameliorate.
This!
The TV movie The Day After did come before it. The Day After did change US policy regarding nuclear weapons. Either way, I find both films to be an excellent warning that nuclear warfare should be avoided at all costs. I have seen the original showing of The Day After and can understand how President Reagan was moved by it. The presentation was it aired as a normal TV movie with commercial breaks and everything up to the point where the bombs drop. As soon as the bombs drop, they wanted to convey that life will not be the same. Not a single commercial interrupted the movie from that point forward. You have to understand that President Reagan, to that point, was willing to use nuclear weapons at the first sign of aggression. The film The Day After did kickstart the SDI program, AKA the Star Wars program. Policy shifted from one of offense to defense. The sentiment felt by the public was that while the soviets were mostly good people, the soviet government wasn't. I was alive at the time, so I feel like i can add what I saw to the conversation. Threads wasn't shown in the US until later on. I've watched and enjoyed both, well, enjoyed as much as one could. The settings are different in both films. Both films are complementary and a wake-up call to the public that if nuclear war happens, nobody wins. Excellent video.
That's fascinating. I love the detail about the lack of ad breaks in the second half. I must watch "The Day After" again... and maybe even put together a video about it!
A haunting classic of a movie.
One of the most haunting I've ever seen!
As always, a great video, Ghosty! Another topic that I hadn't heard of, either. :D Thank you for always putting out such high quality content.
And thank *you* for watching :)
Edinburgh born and bred and never felt anything supernatural down in the vaults during my countless visits 😢
Still worth a visit though, I'd say, just for the history!
@@ghostsoc of course! My friends and I used to go on a Friday evening once a month. We'd go to Greyfriars Kirkyard afterwards, that place was creepy but again no ghosts. I do believe in the paranormal though!
That’s because supernatural things don’t, by definition, exist in reality. And certainly not ghosts, which we not only have ZERO evidence for, but which also violate every law of physics and thermodynamics in the universe. You didn’t experience anything because there’s nothing supernatural to experience. People who claim to experience ghosts down there are either highly suggestible or attention seekers.
It's so loud and ran down. The trains are literally 40 year old and have no been refurbished
They're on the verge of being replaced, I believe!
Are there any shops left in The Centre??
A few... but by now it's almost 50/50 shops and empty units
At the time I worked at an events company who were contracted by the Big Idea to handle PA for all the press conferences etc. So I knew about it from first plans, through to fruition. It was a fantastic idea and spent its first year or so fully booked out by regular School trips, for which it was really well set up. What killed it dead was the Glasgow Science Centre opening a few years later with a similar concept but about ten times the floor space and exhibit room. No real way to compete with that - and it was set up on a wholly different scale of funding. Real shame - it was a brief gem in the area and made superb use of an otherwise unusable area. When coming in to set up events there, there was so much security and rules about not straying off path, as it's a very closely monitored nature reserve - hence the design to make it disappear in the landscape and very very strict restrictions on infrastructure. Hence the parking off the peninsula and the bridge that could be opened up to avoid allowing scallys across it outside opening hours - all pretty clever. Real shame when it shut down.
Really interesting to hear your experience. It does seem like the basis for the place was sound, and it was run well... but just couldn't compete with the Glasgow Science Centre
I visited this - I can't remember when but there was a pretty small window to do so. I hadn't realised it had lasted such a short time. Interesting video.
Must have been fascinating to experience!
thank you for another wonderful video :)
Thank you for watching!
Gotta love the dry Scottish sense of humor ☺️👍
Glad it's appreciated!
I have visited similar centers, they are always built with grants from large organizations. It is fascinating to see buildings built for millions containing a stuffed penguin, old computers and a replica bone of a dinosaur.
Haha, brilliant. I know some places that definitely fit this description!
Funny but a few months ago I saw a CZcams video, I think it was Glovestrains, where she videoed that strange bridge with a gap missing in the middle.
It's really striking-looking when you first see it - especially as it looks like it's been that way for a while!
I was alive in 1969☺️👍 Great video, love your channel, which just "popped up". Greetings from Denmark.
Greetings. We've actually got a video from Denmark coming up!
What a bizarre idea, who would have ever thought a science museum in the middle of nowhere would be a success?
It was really successful initially, as the plan all along was to work with Schools (and this area of the West of Scotland is pretty far from the middle of nowhere - there's a good population and dozens of schools in the catchment) as a day trip location - it was set up brilliantly for it, with big workshop areas.
@@malcolmdonohoe9388 The middle of nowhere is relative, but even in big cities things like science museums are rarely profitable, and have to rely on government subsidies and donations. Seems like an oddly specific thing to build in such a location, surely something more useful to the people of Irvine would have been a better use of the money.
I think if things had worked out differently it really could have become a destination in its own right. Alas... it wasn't to be
The fact that Glasgow Science Centre even looks quite like it probably didn't help. Such a cool building, though. I hope that someone eventually thinks up a good use for it.
The two are eerily similar at first glance. I wonder if one inspired the other...
@@ghostsoc I'm pretty sure Nina and the Neurons had something to do with it... That reference probably means absolutely nothing to anyone who wasn't either a small British child in the early 2010's... or a parent of the above.
It would make a great, remote, events venue, like weddings and parties. Also a refuge for when the zombie apocalypse happens lol.
Can't be done - as I understand, there were incredibly strict restrictions placed on it being a visitor attraction as it's on a Nature Reserve. You couldn't set foot outwith a certain area. Way too much money to redevelop, sadly. It's been mooted a few times, as far as I understand.
It'd be a cool venue for sure... but I think the practical concerns have meant that it just can't happen. Kind of a shame, really
No way the demolished the house over the Seminary !! Insane tbh. Great video :)
It's kind of wild... but the Seminary was viewed as more valuable as it was unique
I went a while ago and had scratches all down my back and a large M carved in to my shoulder. My husband thought I’d had a fling but I didn’t know what he was on about till he took pictures
Ooh, that's interesting. A lot of people come away with similar scratches, from what I've heard...
The 1970s rolling stock were technically autonomous with the driver just opening doors, closing doors and telling the train when it's ready to depart etc. the new trains operate the same currently but are supposed to be driverless at some point (my facts might be slightly wrong as my memory sucks)
I think it's definitely a phased rollout of the new driverless capabilities... but I think it should be later this year that most trains on the system are driverless
@@ghostsoc I didn't know they were going driverless so soon, I figured it was going to be a few years
Being in part the result of a Glaswegian great-grandfather, I'm a bit puzzled why I didn't know Glasgow had an underground line until now 🤔😅 . Great video 🙂👍
Thank you! And, yes, it really surprised me when I learned about it, as I'd visited Glasgow before without ever noticing!
I miss the bye! at the end of each video
The bye will be back in future videos! 💪
14 stations?
Whoops - 15! Although that fifteen has had a few changes over the years
Such an interesting map at 0:51. St enoch station, Queen's dock and Princess' dock, no Kingston bridge and M8, Western infirmary...that's definitely a map of the subway when it just began its operation
If you like old maps, the national library of Scotland have some on their website
I think that map is from 1965... although it's not too different from the original map, which you can see here: maps.nls.uk/towns/rec/4269
@@trainsarecool190 If you go to the "georeferenced maps" feature on the NLS website, you can compare lots of old maps with contemporary aerial views.
2:04 _"But the kind of ugly that was very fashionable ... in the 1950s"._ Best description I've ever heard. Spot on! 😂
The 1950s was certainly an interesting decade
Well, fashionable for Architects and Town/City Councils certainly. Not so much the everyday chap in the street, whom had no say in the matter.
The Clockwork Orange... 💀
Good film... even better underground transit system...
it's anoying as hell that the seats do that
You didn’t mention that it closes at 18:00 on a Sunday, it really has to move forward to the 21st century 😀
Good point. Especially annoying as it ran late into the evening in the 1800s!
The worst one is the later opening on Sunday imo
the city has the a suburban rail network second only in size to london so the subway small as it is compliments the overall transport system of the city
Glasgow's train connections are AMAZING, to be fair!
