Indian K-Pop Idol Accused of Skin Bleaching Goes Viral in China? Colorism, X:IN Aria & Fair Skin | In this video I discuss X:IN Aria (Malayam former child actress from Kerala), Korean reaction to her, colorism in kpop, along with skin whitening & beauty standards in Korea (Asia). The history of K-Pop group XIN and first Indian K-pop idol Blackswan Sriya Lenka are also discussed. Everything from Twice promoting skin lightening cream Scarlett Whitening, marketed with before and after photos of people bleaching their dark skin, to Stray Kids being an ambassador for skin whitening kbeauty skincare is covered. Receipts from a TikTok user expose the beauty standard for Black K-Pop trainees. I also talk about celebrities selling glutathione supplements and pill treatments like Astro Cha Eunwoo for Luxxe White and SM Girls’ Generation SNSD Yoona for BB Lab. K-Pop idol CLC Seungyeon bleaching her skin is also included.

People need to know that there are fairest of the fair INDIANS too. And when i was in my teens , i was darker than what i am today. Thats because i wouldn't use sunscreen. No proper skincare, playing in the sun for long hours . Now my skin has got lighter . Im not fair but my skintone has become lighter from before. That doesn't mean ive bleached my skin. And there are many friends of mine who went through the same.

Even if you stay their for 1 week you can still see the effects but your skin will get back to original skin tone if you come back home. And using sunscreen and skincare products can remove your tan making you lighter. Also skin whitening is not permanent you have to get it every month to stay white. She might or might not have gotten skin lightening until she accept it we can't be sure as there are several reason of skin becoming lighter. I understand that people think she bleached her skin and it is quite likely true. I just want to put it out there being from the same background as aria , that skin tones can change according to how much sun your exposed to. I personally experience myself tanning and having a darker complexion in summers (especially when I’m in India ) and having a fairer complexion during winters. Although it’s possible she did some skin bleaching I think there’s a lot of complexion change due to change in environment and perhaps being indoors more.

Exactly. I went through that same. As a teen , i was darker because i didnt use sunscreen, playing in the sun or too much sun exposure, no proper skincare, climate was too hot. Now im lighter than what i was before. So many friends of mine have gone through that same. Also many friends of mine are so so fair and they are Indian. I live in the North-East and there are beautiful women who also look like korean actresses. That doesn't mean they got surgery to look like that. Its genes. As a Indian, i am proud of both the idols sriya and ariya. I don't know why indian fans are toxic and not supporting both of them instead comparing them .In my point of view both of them are wonderful. Why we Indians are always fighting among us , honestly we need to support both of them becoz they both are our pride of india.India people has pale to dusky skin
tone that's natural that doesn't meant to their talent that we must accept. In 90's and 80's we have huge colouration issues in india but still now we have the same problem, when we can solve this problem ,what other countries think about us? It is not only a problem for indian idols ,each and every indian born in dusky colour was criticised by the people of india. We are the future generation of india we need to exit this problem or else dark people will not get any opportunities in acting or anything else.We need to stop those issues. Even if both two are fair or dark we need to support both of them as a indian."colour doesn't deserve your talent".

"Supporting someone while not degrading or comparing others". I guess people have forgotten such basic values.
I wanna ask such people in general:
If you don't like someone, can't you stop degrading and posting shitty comments on them? You can ignore them, right? How do even feel good after speaking bad?
Even if someone goes through minor changes to upgrade themselves, it is still their choice. Don't you non-celebs upgrade yourself with time, your mentality, your strength, or your dress sense, or take care of your skin with home diy or market skin routines to look pleasant? Its all ok.

I don’t know if Aria bleached her skin or not but a few things are worth mentioning:
    1. The pre-debut photos don’t look too off from the photoshoot ones and in different childhood pictures her skin tone is darker or lighter. Looks like Korean style white makeup and lighting play a huge role. Like other idols, they are making her skin look lighter. I don’t think she would need skin bleaching to achieve the light skin. The tricks they normally use seem more likely, especially it looks like her makeup is too light for her.
    2. Sriya is the first Indian idol but she technically did not debut with their comeback yet when x:in started performing so Indians were excited. But Blackswan seems to have a much larger fan base and support.
    3. Aria went viral in China because she fits their beauty standard of big eyes and small face and was being compared to Dilraba.
    4. The “Eurocentric” features is wrong to me because Indians come in all type of features. She doesn’t have “Eurocentric” features because she is Malayali and she has those features. It doesn’t make sense that she has “European” features. She looks malayali. There is no one way for Indians to look, even though some people might be used to the stereotypical look of “Indian”. Maybe they meant that she has features that meet European beauty standards? Well she has features that meet a lot of beauty standards. But I hope people don’t generalize how Indians look.
Hopefully they both are successful and don’t get mistreated because of their skin/ethnicity. Sriya is so talented and Blackswan deserves more recognition. Looking forward to their new promotions.

X:IN just had a summer comeback and Aria is still much lighter than she was during the winter. I can't stand colorism and these comments from Aria's fans shown in the video are so ridiculous.
From the pictures alone, Sriya is on the light-skin side of the brown/black spectrum. She is barely any darker than Aria for me. So comparing their complexions and putting down Sriya for hers is so childish.
And I am going to be honest, I did not know the Aria girl, so without any info, I thought she was Chinese. She kind of looks like Pinky (former Pristin member).
As for the skin bleaching products: big sigh of despair.
Between these whitening products and the super light foundation, idols who don't naturally have a pale skin be looking like ghosts (and the difference between the idols' original skin tone and the make-up is so visible sometimes, especially around the neck area and at the top of their foreheads).
Also still don't understand why pale skin is called "fair" skin. There might be some historical explanation for it but I would still side-eye the term.

    • @AdeolaAsh
      @AdeolaAsh  Před rokem +24

Apparently “fair” used to mean “good” like “fair weather”. So it seems “fair skin” is to “good hair” in that sense 😭 historians are still trying to figure out the origin though so I’m not sure. I never liked the term either

Thank you for the explanation. I did think it was something like that, but it does not make much sense for me given that English is not my first language and there is no such thing as "fair skin" for pale skin in my native language (I guess the closest would be "skin as white as snow").

We cannot say that she bleached her skin, i mean her childhood picture and her teen pic won't count cuz we usually exposed our skin to the sun alot in our childhood and teen, that's why it looks burnt and dark even if we have fair skin. I myself in my childhood had very dark skin cuz of lots of sun exposure but now I'm so fair that everybody say girl don't u walk out in sun, u look so fair😅. But my real skin is fair and i don't bleach my skin. So it can be possible cuz of that reason and also dark skin doesn't mean not beautiful, it is beautiful as well like fair skin, but if she did it then also it's her choice, no matter what people say.

Most girls complete puberty by 18. Aria was 19 when she went to Korea for training. In December 2022 she was brown 9:00 by her debut in April 2023 she was pale white 8:56 I understand everything you’ve said about puberty, lack of uniform body color, environmental factors etc which is exactly why I said it was a possibility there was skin bleaching, not a guarantee. Black people also don’t usually have a uniform body color, get lighter/darker according to the seasons, and can also get lighter with age. Most people with darker melanin, regardless of race or ethnicity, have this. My motivation for making this video was to discuss the issue of colorism in K-Pop, Korean entertainment companies trying to use diversity for clout while also enforcing colorist beauty standards, and the kpop fans who also feed into the colorism. From the reaction I’ve gotten to this video, I’ve learned a lot. Many people saw this video as me trying to insult Aria when in reality, even if skin bleaching did occur, I would only feel sad for her as I do for any woman who is made to conform to systemically discriminatory beauty standards. Moving forward, I will likely avoid talking about anyone who isn’t Black in regards to this nature as to not cause offense.

Thank you for your commentary on this issue. What is still so mind boggling about the KPOP industry as a whole is the actual LACK of creative talent, original talent, natural talent and REAL people. These companies recruit what they feel is attractive and marketable based on superficial beliefs and unrealistic characteristics with no desire for being authentic, i.e. skin bleaching obsessive cosmetic surgery, same old choreography and of course autotune…ALL FAKE.
Google; what American and India Vocalists DO NOT use autotune? You get a significant list for both countries. Then Google what Korean vocalists DO NOT use autotune? You get CRICKETS.
AND NO...autotune is NOT a tool that vocalist use to just balance out pitch; but to significantly balance out their voices. As in, actually singing and holding a tune like professionals or trained vocalist do. " Autotune uses "software algorithms" to reduce natural human pitch variations and "in fact" changes the singers original vocals" which makes the vocals sound unnatural.(Antares Audio Technologies). Autotune is cheating, meaning it could make the worst singer; the best and has been purported to have destroyed popular music and the whole signifance of what it means to be a true vocalist Artist (AAT).
KPOP management companies don’t have to work as hard as their trainees, because they can steal from Black Music Artist, appropriate whatever else they can from other cultures, use autotune to dress it all up and call it KPOP. The U.S. is catching on. KPOP now comes here to die. The only thing that keeps most people interested is the drama.

No one hating Sriya i was supporting Sriya since she came in k-pop and even now but Our typical indians just being honest and it's not her fault. No one fault is there to hate. Being an Indian I'm supporting both but many Indians are so typical they should support both of them instead if comparing each others. Sriya and Aria both don't deserve hate by any reasons because being an idol it's not a long term carrier and it only can decides when you'll be succed or not.

Using whitening or bleaching agents is someone's own choice. They can do wtever they want bt the fans who are bullying someone on the basis of color, race and promoting colorism is really not acceptable. Fun fact is that the most of them are from the same country, living in the same neighborhood where we can see almost every skintone. Every person who is colorist is really disgusting.
I also feel bad for aria, poor lil girl jst debuted in a rush and didn't get even a chance to show her full potential and some of her fans are seeking hate for her by comparing her skintone with sriya and degrading her on the basis of their beauty standards.
I wonder if they are really aria fan. Both aria and sriya wtever their skin tone is they are really beautiful. If u bullying someone in the interest of ur loved one then let me tell u it's not going to effect the bully bt it will reflect on ur loved one. Stop this bullying.... It's disgusting

It becomes your choice not because you want but bcs society wants it. There's a difference, it's no really a choice in this sort of society

@@Everythingz127 Agreed this is a harsh reality, society is more accepting toward the people with lighter skintone. Aria and sriya are the examples. Aria got viral for her visuals the lighter skintone inspite of having literally any proper line in the song. Whereas sriya hv equal part in the song but still people are being rude comparing their skin complexion regardless of her talent. For the societal acceptance one need to accept theirself first.

It is possible that Aria’s company might have made her undergo skin whitening procedures, but tbh Indians have a really wide range when it comes to skin complexion. Pale w rosy flush, olive undertones, deep browns and even darker (and I must add that they are all lovely in their own right). Aria’s complexion really does not surprise because there are Indians who are naturally paler than her without any procedures. However, the main issue here is the obsession w pale, light skin and the abhorring disrespect shown towards artists/people who do not fit that ideal. I mean, look at Shriya’s beautiful skin that many from the western part of the world would absolutely die for. The more we open ourselves to different “flavours” of beauty, the more beautiful the world will begin to feel..

Honestly speaking i knew even if some indians made it to the kpop industry, they'd have to change themselves to fit the standard there so I'm not really surprised. As an indian myself i honestly don't understand why an Indian would wanna be a celebrity in a different country when they can be a singer here as well , specially in east asia when out of all countries out there they take physical appearance seriously the most. Yes colorism exist in india as well but are we judged as much in real life as well where everyone need to look a certain way or they'd be bullied? No. Most indians i know in real dont even care about how they look when they go out. Where that's not how it is in korea. Im not really hating on korea here. Its the sense of values and culture are exactly opposite there so i don't understand why some indian wanna live their dream there when they can do it in here as well? Idk. If shes happy with it then thats okay but i honestly don't understand their reasoning

This is going to be a long one😭...Do these stupid fans understand that by insulting and harassing Sriya, they're also hurting Aria? I can't imagine how anxious and upset Aria must be feeling seeing so many of her "fans" insulting one of her country folk for her. She must be so ashamed and I can't shake the feeling that these fans are mostly East Asians **cough* cough* because this aligns with their brand.
Both women are beautiful and can co exist in this industry and I don't understand why some people are acting this way. The K-pop industry is not really ready for diversity and I'm so proud of the black woman who refused to bleach her skin and sell her soul for this ish because it's not worth it at all.
My heart sank when I saw Eunwoo promoting that skin bleaching product😭 like are there any idols who aren't problematic though? I have zero faith left in K-pop idols. Twice didn't surprise me and Stray kids have always been sketchy so I wasn't shocked. The crazy thing is that they have so many International fans yet this is what they do. You'd expect openly colourist groups like NCT to be the one's pulling these stunts but it be the "less problematic" one's doing it.
No one forces these idols to do these things, for example Kai from Exo intentionally works with skincare companies that are inclusive and he was the face of a brand that was a first of its kind in Korea for including products in his skin tone range. He and Hwasa were also involved in a similar campaign. So I don't want to hear any excuses because these people clearly know what they're doing.
