  • Planning to go into UPCM MD-PhD Program? Can't decide if you want to take MD-PhD? Or just want to know what MD-PhD in Molecular Medicine is? Here are insights on the program by an MD-PhD student.
Just like any program, MD-PhD in Molecular Medicine has its pros (aside from free tuition) and cons. Once you get into it, there is no turning back (or at least without consequences hehe). But what I am sure of is that MD-PhD is one hell of a ride!

New Subscriber here!! First of all I would like to commend your effort in making vlog about MD-PHD program possible and for being eloquent in explaining every detail continuously and for having an approachable aura the way you deliver yourself that engages the viewers to be interested in watching you and your content.
As an entrepreneurial student, my course isn't that related to natural or hard science but promotes solution making strategies to solve the unsolved problems occurring in the country that triggers the fuel of my passion implanted in the heart of mine to reach my dreams of being a physician-scientist one day. When I was young, I dreamt to be a scientist because I very much excel in science when I was in elem and I became best in science when I was grade 8 as my favorite subject is biology. When I was senior high, I became a STEM student wherein we conducted a science research. From then on, I knew that researches solve the unsolved mysteries of the smallest to largest organisms surrounding the earth and universe which enlightened the bewildered thoughts of what we just know to what is intended to be known.
If God's will, I hope He can permit me to pass UPCM's interview and requirements in becoming a MD-PHD student in order to collaborate my entrepreneurship learnings with medicine and applied health research in in making holistic solutions to the country's biggest underrated as well as unsolved problems and dig deeper to unknown scientific discoveries that can be a great help in developing advancements in healthcare system.
Thank you miss Jea, our future Filipino physician-scientist!!

Hi! Thank you sa interest mo sa program heheh.
      1. Iba iba talaga eh, depende sa research interest mo. Some do immunology studies (novel vaccines, B-cell/T-cell response, innate immune response studies), some cell cultures, some DNA studies, may iba hinahaluan ng bioinformatics, parasitology studies as well. Basta the research should be in line with the objectives of DOST-PCHRD, sufficiently molecular and had medical importance.
      3. Pwede iba ibang topics per research na gagawin mo. Hindi naman need to continuous studies. Pero if nandun yung interest mo, no one is stopping you naman. Need to publication na ikaw ang primary author for you to graduate sa program, so yes, highly encourage na mag publish.

Hi! Thank you for creating this vlog. Ive been looking for someone to make a vlog about the MD-PhD program of UPCM for quite some time now :)) Usually kasi purely MD from different med schools yung topics ng most vlogs. I have a few questions lang regarding sa graduate research sa UPCM:
    1. Do you have advisers in the MD-PhD program who also do research, or at least interested in biomedical engg or computational approach to health research?
    2. Do you recommend the MD-PhD program (based on advisers/grad courses/laboratory etc) for those who are interested in applied health research instead of basic clinical research? I believe the PhD is in molecular medicine but does the program also cater research problems that are outside “molecular” medicine?
Thank you so much, and best of luck to your channel!

    • @JeaGitzie
      @JeaGitzie  Před 3 lety

Thank you! It is delightful to see that a lot of you are genuinely interested in the MD-PhD program :).
      1. The MD-PhD committee members (advisers) have varied research interests and are also open to other research fields. We have advisers who are in public health and thus knowledgable in biostat and epidemiology. We also have advisers who are very akin to computer programs and bioinformatics.
      2. Since the focus of the program is in molecular medicine, most PhD courses would focus on the molecular side. However, the MD side would supplement the needed clinical knowledge which one could combine with that from the PhD courses. The laboratories in the department if I am not mistaken is being renovated right now to improve the facilities and it's capabilities. We also have the UP-NIH which we can also arrange to use. Admittedly, there are still a lot of room for improvement for the labs but we can work with it. This is also why some MD-PhD pursue their research abroad under the sandwich program. For the advisers, we must have a primary adviser from the committee but one can arrange to have an external adviser which could add help and expertise in one's chosen topic. The researches are also not limited to basic research alone. Sometimes done in partnership with PGH, MD-PhD students join applied researches as well e.g. recent Covid researches.
I hope I answered you question. Hope to see you in my next videos 😊

I personally do not plan to dedicate my career only to research as I also plan and want to practice as a physician, which I know is challenging in the Philippines. But you are right. If one is already sure at the time of choosing na research track talaga ang gusto niya as a career, then MS Mol Med is a good choice especially, di na niya need mag take up pa ng med courses and duties na alam naman na niya na di niya gusto i-practice. :)

As far as I know, nope. The program talaga is set na 1 year PHD courses first before med proper. 🙂

Hi! I believe so. I am not sure about sa curriculum nung 2 PhDs that yiu mentioned pero yes, PhD talaga ang cpunting sa PhD part ng program just that isa lang ang graduation so you get one diploma for both.
