Him saying it was his belief that his selected target "didn't have any friends and therefore wouldn't leave an impact" had more to do with believing that as such, his absence wouldn't be felt or noticed as much if he died vs someone who was more known and "popular" whose absence might have left more of an impact on people and therefore caused an uproar/a sense of urgency to find out what happened to them. There are many killers who choose their victims, having this mindset. Believing that the intended target has no one (family and/or friends) and therefore won't be noticed if they suddenly go missing. Generally and thankfully, they usually turn out to be wrong which is how they wind up getting caught.
