- One of the key skills that young osprey need to learn is how to self feed. Up until recently female NC0 has undertaken all the feeding duties at meal times.
Watch as LM12 delivers a live brown trout, eagerly grabbed by PF4 ('scuse the typo in the video), who manages to hold it securely, dispatch it and begin to self feed.
Tough skin can be tricky and both chicks found it hard to make progress on a larger fish, fortunately Mum is still on hand to help them out. Judging by the competitive Tug o' War though, it won't be long before the youngsters can self feed on their own. They sure are growing up fast!

Blue PF4 is much more proficient at self-feeding than her little brother, being both bigger and stronger. Blue PF5 really struggled to tear the fish he was feeding on around midday today, but he persevered ... and he persevered ... and he persevered and by the end, that fish was longer than the living version. I don't know if he managed to swallow the tail or not in the end, but at least he'll have the neck muscles of Hercules! 💪
Ha ha He has had to fight for everything His big sister bullied him so much But he persevered and he hid behind mum and he is a fiesty wee guy now who will more than hold his own Maybe we should call him Hercules right enough
How did they get ringed?
A licensed and experienced ringer ringed them on the nest. When the parent comes off and alarm calls the youngsters play dead, making the process of calmly and quietly ringing them quick.
When is the last time these chicks have had a food delivery?
I think this is the third day of no food.. I think…
I’ve been watching for days and they are so hungry
PF5 has a small fish on Wednesday evening anf PF4 on Thursday afternoon. LM12 has been defending the territory which has made it hard for him to leave the area to hunt. As wild animals they can go long periods without food, even if they do shout about it!
