    *I realize I skipped over mentioning the color page when I talk about all of the different pages. I should have included it but I talk about some of the color features shortly after. The Color page is pretty much the biggest selling point of DaVinci Resolve.*

    • @lb5928
      @lb5928 Před 4 lety +2

      Wrong.
      Davinci Resolve by far performs the best. As of version 16 it has full GPU support which is not the case for adobe premier. Final Cut has GPU support but its not as good as Davinci Resolve.
      I can't express enough how good the GPU support is in Davinci Resolve, It literally makes scrubbing, exporting, ext much faster than in either of the other two.
      Davinci Resolve 16 is a no brainer.

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  Před 4 lety +4

      You may not be wrong about Resolve having the best GPU support BUT what I said in the video about Final Cut is that it runs the best on the most range of computer powers. In order to get smooth playback and timeline scrubbing you’re talking about in Premiere you need a very powerful computer unless you stick to 720p or 1080p timelines. If you took a base MacBook Pro and throw 4K ProRes HQ files in a timeline final cut is going to perform vastly better than resolve on the same computer. You can easily find videos from Jonathan Morrison using 8K RED footage in final cut on a 12 in retina MacBook which is a 1.1ghz core m with no dedicated GPU. If I tried to use resolve on that computer it probably wouldn’t even open the project with major lag of crashing lol. Again I love resolve and it’s my favorite NLE but it’s not better on every computer.

    • @lb5928
      @lb5928 Před 4 lety +2

      @@initialfocus You should install the latest version of Resolve on a laptop with no dedicated GPU and turn on the GPU support.
      I think you will be pleasantly surprised, It will utilize the integrated GPU available and perform respectably even with 4k footage.
      Integrated GPUs from intel and AMD are pretty powerful these days.

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  Před 4 lety +52

      That’s such an amazing feature. Any editor knows the frustration of a software crash. I’ll add that Davinci actually has this feature too! A few months on from your posting, I’m guessing you’re pretty much on Resolve now or using it as much as possible? Nothing at all against the other two being compared, but I think whether comparing price, features or general performance (GPU optimization in Resolve) the choice is pretty clear by now for most who do try them all. The main thing for me other than the industry standard color page is there is no round-tripping needed or jumping in and out of other apps - it’s all there from start to finish in DR. Good video on this and the points you made were well thought out and presented. Thanks.

If this is true that would be a very big negative if you ever plan on having sound cut and mixed professionally. If you plan to do all of your sound within the application then that won’t be a problem. Hoping I can get confirmation on the OMF export. Perhaps the AAF is proprietary to Avid?

    I started off on PP. I actually loved it and stayed with Adobe for years without ever wanting to learn other systems...that is until a few weeks ago. PP has been lagging and crashing incessantly recently, and each new update made it all worse. Yesterday, I finally had enough and tried out Resolve. I'm hooked!

    I use Resolve for my BMP4K footage, but after trying to do a full rush video editing project, I longed to return to Premiere - although I hate Premiere. Just simple things like a full-screen timeline, masks, titles I could kill in AE because that's my thing, marker index (clear, not list form) and more unfortunately drove me back. But I do want to master Color in Resolve.

  • @technomikelyons

    I use three editors, mainly.
    I use Vegas Pro Edit for some things mainly for one particular fearure: automatic crossfades. It makes it easy to drag one video or audio clip to overlap another and it automatically sets the crossfade/dissolve to however long they overlap. The main complaint I have is the usual frequent crashes.
    I also use Hitfilm. It's a bit like something like Premiere and After Effects rolled into one. I really like using it. The perpetual pricing of the pro version means that you get 12 months of updates, and if you decide not to renew for another year, you still get to keep using it, just without any further updates. They also used to offer a free Express edition, but now they've added a subscription model where Express is now the Free tier.
    I have begun using DaVinci a lot more recently, and am becoming more snd more impressed, especially with some features like Fusion and the Power Bins. It may soon become my main editor, and am seriously considering getting a Studio license for the full feature set.

      @@GurmeetSingh-fr8uo other than hdr colour editing and a few different effects options, the really big difference is that, as far as I can tell, the free version of davinci doesn’t use the gpu at all, and instead relies completely on the cpu. This obviously bottlenecks performance a tonne, but I have still found it to be tolerable on my pc. It’s definitely not smooth, but it does the job

    You forgot to mention one thing : you can't install final cut on a pc. DaVinci and premiere are made both for mac and pc. So mac are expensiv for what they are. You can have for the same price of a mac a killer pc machine. Anyway if you work with 4k or 8k you will work with proxy for editing, this workflow is used in film industry also corporate etc.. They are made for. It is funny to mention DaVinci, in 2015 I had a professionnal conference between video editors and we where speaking about the futur of Da Vinci for video editing, I tried it in a short moovie festival early this year, Da Vinci is really interresting but you still don't have a lot of tools you can find in premiere. To mention : i have used in a professionnal field final cut pro 7 for years (tv area), when final cut pro X released it was a desaster, 20 years ago, my first video editing software was premiere pro. To me premiere is better than what we had with final cut pro 7, a continuity.
    I don't agree with you, not all softwares are the same, they all have their own logic, even for ediiting. I learned to edit trough Avid actually, with the 3 points editing system, because you have no other choice (almost). So yeah, I would say final cut pro X is like an entrance in video editing world, professionnally I work on every kind of projects, tv, cinema, documentaries, corporate with just premiere (every companies use it). Tools, tracking, effects are just so... Goood...
    And for exemple, something you don't say too : you can "buy" premiere for a certain amount of time, if you need premiere for 3 months only, you can cancell your subscription.
    I love to use DaVinci to create proxy, to relink after I finish to edit on premiere with proxy all the files with the RAW and DaVinci is a beast for color grading.

      7:32 "Final Cut, it's made by Apple. Obviously it's only available on Macs." Also, I missed the part where he said "all softwares are the same". Probably because he never said it, he just pointed out similarities in their basic layout.
      "And for exemple, something you don't say too : you can "buy" premiere for a certain amount of time, if you need premiere for 3 months only, you can cancell your subscription."
      No kidding, it's not like you can do that with literally any monthly service or anything.
      Your comment screams that you're an old guy who doesn't have a current understanding of all 3 platforms.
