  • This video shows me troubleshooting a no-spark condition on my Johnson / Evinrude 1991 200 hp V6 outboard (Johnson / Evinrude / OMC).
    Please look at:

    Specifically, I talk about how to use a remote start switch, set timing, test parts with a cheap multimeter.

    By far the mots informative video, I have been searching posts on youtube for weeks, this is the most simple, straightforward explanation on 'how to' troubleshoot vs how someone replaced a part. Thanks!!!

    Another note, if you purchase CDI items, give the troubleshooting number a call. Very knowledgeable people are willing to help out. Much better than using all the various forums. I would second the factory manual, all the others are fairly worthless.

    When testing the pin outs on connector plugs order a pair of male and female pins for your engine and solder leads to them.
    Buy doing so you have the best connection and eliminate using gator clip. Of course you would order the pins when you need to replace another higher dollar component because the pins themselves aren't very expensive to justify the shipping. Just my 02.

    What of spark plugs does this motor use? Is it a special kind? I just bought a bout with a 1993 200hp Johnson. And i want to do a tune up.

    Mine misfires on the muffs when I run the throttle linkage by hand. But it misfires and puffs a little puff of gas or smoke out of the intake side right below that WOT throttle bolt. Is that a head gasket?
    Idles fine, only does this when I run the throttle on the muffs and do the throttle only not the timing linkage bar. Haven’t had a chance to put it in the water yet.

    • @TheSmittycjs806
      @TheSmittycjs806  Před 4 lety

      I don't know for sure; maybe. If it were a 4 stroke i would say check the valves. That leaves us with gaskets and piston rings. How is your compression?

    • @mrmidnight32
      @mrmidnight32 Před 4 lety

      Casey Smith compression is low, about 90’s last I checked but it’s even across the board and apparently these motors have semi low compression to start.
      I was chasing an idle misfire months before but the motor ran great with throttle. Finally cleaned the corroded ground to the coil pack which fixed the idle misfire. But then it made the misfire happen when in throttle

  • @gonzalotomasovalle5514

    Hey i just got the cdi stator and powerpack. But the connectors out of the powerpack that plug to stator are all brown wires. How do in know which plug goes on which side?

    • @TheSmittycjs806
      @TheSmittycjs806  Před 6 lety

      That is strange. The CDI powerpacks for a Johnson have several connections. The long orange cables go to the induction coils. The connections with the blue plugs you can count the wires/pins on the connectors. My power pack looks like this ssli.ebayimg.com/images/g/FJsAAOSwEPtZZIHh/s-l1600.jpg

    • @juliosolis7941
      @juliosolis7941 Před 3 lety

      They're two plugs with brown wires on the original power pack one is on the left and the other on the right but on this cdi brand all 4 are coming out of the center

    Do you have to adjust the timing when changing the timer base?

    • @TheSmittycjs806
      @TheSmittycjs806  Před 5 lety

      Yes. It wasn't a large adjustment but the manual says it needs to be done. The timing adjustment is difficult to do because you have to adjust it at idle and at wide open throttle. Right or wrong, I did the adjustments with my boat on the trailer at the dock.

  • @fishmandad588
    @fishmandad588 Před 6 lety

    Hi do u gotta reset the timing if take off the timer base on Johnson 150 2001

    • @TheSmittycjs806
      @TheSmittycjs806  Před 6 lety

      Yes. I think the best way to do this, without a timing wheel, is to keep your boat trailered. If you have your original flywheel you should have your timing marked already. All you have to do is get a timing light and a buddy. I used the one from harbor freight tools. It had an adjustment for ATDC so all I had to do was match "0" to the timing needle at full throttle.

    I have no spark on my 1996 Johnson 225 HP outboard. Stator looked bad and didn't have its insulation anymore. Bought a new stator, installed still no spark. Just bought the Timer base. It looks very old compared to the powerpak. Hoping it gets spark. Good news is the new power packs aren't to expensive. About $200. Bad news is Maybe i should have bought the powerpack first LOL

      Hey man, the new timer base fixed the spark issue. I know I’m supposed to adjust the timing now.
      Engine is running terrible in the water. Won’t run past 3,000 rpms.
      Hoping you can post a link of the procedure steps you followed for adjusting the timing

      @TheSmittycjs806  Před 3 lety

      @@boatrestore2816 There isn't any good videos that I could find. The hardest part of adjusting timing on these motors having to adjust it at full open throttle under load. The way I did it was to keep the boat on the trailer strapped down.
      You look a little bit like a crazy person at the dock throwing water around; the only other way to do it is to purchase a special prop

    What was ur boat doing wasn't getting spark

    • @TheSmittycjs806
      @TheSmittycjs806  Před 7 lety

      Paul Thomason at first, I thought it was getting too much fuel and flooding out. I discovered a no spark condition when I sprayed staring fluid into the air intake and nothing happened.
      I checked compression and I was within spec, so that was a relief. Spark plugs were wet, so fuel was there. Spark was the last component of the triad.

    • @paulthomason8375
      @paulthomason8375 Před 7 lety

      Casey Smith did feel like it was run half motor I'm haveing a problem were I get to the run fine if it will start then fish start up idle speed

    • @TheSmittycjs806
      @TheSmittycjs806  Před 7 lety

      What forced me into this project is my motor would not start; however, I think I know what you are talking about. Sound to me like one of your ignition coils might be bad / one cylinder is not firing. You could check this by running your motor for a minute or two, then pulling your plugs. The one that is wet is the problem.
      If this result is inconclusive, then you need to get a voltmeter with RMS or buy the RMStator I mentioned in the video around 18:24. Then you have to test the Stator, Timing, and Power Pack.

    That is not an idle adjustment screw. This engine adjustment ( I have it ) for idle is set threw the idle timing screw.. the throttle plates have to be 100% closed when at idle. Messing with the "idle screw" will cause the lync and sync to be outta wack... I can make a video if anyone needs.
