They want popularity. Itâs as simple as that. I used to think it was only nerds who got bullied at school who did this nonsense, now im 100% sure itâs the popular kids at school who want to still be popular, and they have an ideology that enables them and rewards them.
I think you're slightly wrong. It's people who are desperate for popularity, yes....but I believe it's the unpopular kids from school (especially highschool) that are seeking that what they feel entitled to. They were feeling the same back in school but they couldn't hide behind a screen and fake who they really are and they couldn't gang together with similar types from around the globe back then. They are only a few in every location, so it's only online that they have support/allies.
My experience of them is that they always felt entitled to popularity and getting their way, but they're unlikable weirdos, so they can only succeed if they hide behind a screen and plays a role. That's the core, the bulk of them.
Several other types has latched on out of opportunism though. Muppets that jump on every popular bandwagon just so that they can fool themselves that they are popular.

Dude was a real genius too, he was on for top grades in school and expected to go to an ivy league school, but ended up with crap grades and just about got into college and didnt even finish it, his drive to be popular ruined him; which i guess you can say is karma. On disney, youd think the money men would figure out that less viewers means less money, but they seem driven by hubris, its a cultural problem at disney that isnt going away, if the shatolyte does anything, it should bury star wars forever...but it wont because disney and lucasfilm wont let it. I love how desperate they are getting. Grew up as a normal kid who loved Star Wars. I now have young kids that I was excited to introduce into the SW universe, now I doubt I'll show them anything besides episodes 4-6 and Rogue One, if I even bother. Pretty disappointed.
