It's a joke based on the ambiguity of the word 'Berliner'. 'Ich bin ein Berliner' is a famous quote by J.F.K relating to the citizens of Berlin. But Berliner is also a pastry :)

As a German I think french grammar is easier, but spelling/pronunciation is wayyy easier in german
