Lee Iacocca was the best thing that every happened to Chrysler. The bailout might have been the financing behind the recovery but it was Iacocca's commitment to do the right thing by the company and its employees that made Chrysler great. People were proud to buy a car from such a great man.
The government refused the loan at first they were going to let the company fail and in came Lee. The government gave Lee the money and not only did he turn the company around he paid the loan back early. Awsome man. Knew what America needed and wanted in cars for sure.
Absolutely love this commercial Lee Iacocca thank you for bringing us the Chrysler minivan Chrysler LH cars you are truly the best America can be! You will be truly missed
THANKS Lee you will be missed. I couldn't imagine the world without Chrysler. Thanks for saving it it deserves to stay the best. Their cars all offer what most don't. Long live Chrysler!
That man right there was a major influence on american cars period. He invented and later saved the mustang. Then left ford and saved the entire Chrysler corporation single handedly. Some how old Lee always knew what American consumers wanted and needed. When he came up with the mustang there was nothing else like it in America it was a legend over nite when unveiled in 1964. When the mustang was dying out due to becoming to big and gas prices were up. He redesigned the mustang made it smaller and more fuel efficient. No they were not anything close to a power house mustang but it was what we needed at the time and it was and still is the only mustang to compete with the original mustang in sales. Again it may not have been what mustang fans wanted but it was what Americans needed and wanted at the time and instead of the mustang dying that little car saved the mustang. So love them "I do" had one in high school. Or hate them they were needed. Then he went to Chrysler when they were as good as sunk. The government refused to help Chrysler as long as they had the same leadership so in came Lee the government bailed them out on a loan. Not only did Lee turn the company around but he paid back the government loan early. Hell of a man when it came to autos he knew what we needed and when we needed it.
Rest in peace Lee. Between him and Carroll Shelby they breathed new life into Chrysler at a time when they really needed it! Brought them back from a near bankruptcy to total success. Shelby was brought in (as their performance consultant) and he did an awesome job with the Omni, Charger, Daytona, Shadow, Lancer, etc... and the joint venture between Chrysler and Maserati brought us the *amazing* 4v per cylinder head from Maserati/Cosworth. Best years for Chrysler in my opinion. Really great times when they built fast, *affordable*, fun cars to drive!!

Lee Iacocca's straight talking TV commercials convinced me to buy a Plymouth Acclaim, and I am generally VERY hard to persuade. It had a Japanese Mitsubishi engine in it, which seems to contradict his claim that American cars were then every bit as good as the Japanese. I never did have any trouble with that Mitsubishi engine, but I sure had a lot of trouble with the transmission. I think they rebuilt it 2 or 3 times under warranty, and the car had other problems as well. That five year warranty that originally persuaded me to buy the car must have caused them to lose a lot of money on my specific car. Lee Iacocca was a darn good talker, and I'm sure he did a lot of good for the company, but from my standpoint the quality of that Acclaim was nowhere near what I was led to believe in Lee Iacocca's clever TV commercials. From what I can see, the Japanese have always been out in front of the American cars in terms of quality. If you don't believe me just look at the resale value of any used Japanese car and a comparable American made car.
Jay Dahl The Ultra Drive 4 speed auto was horrible. The best combo in the Plymouth Acclaim and dodge Spirit was the Torque-Flite 3 Speed automatic and the 2.5L Slant 4.
I'm on my 6th Nissan. The Japanese are never satisfied with the status quo. They continue to constantly fine tune improvements to their cars. I had (3) Buicks earlier and they fell apart, I mean really fell apart. GM was indifferent to the situation.

Don't forget that he saved Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty too by soliciting funds for their repair. But he was mortal, in his own words "he flunked retirement".
Lee was a great American. More CEOs should learn from him.

LOL. They were cheap junk. Granted, they were better than Ford & GM's cheap junk, but that isn't saying much.

Arguably the greatest American CEO of all time.

He left Ford only because he was fired from it.
You came up with the crew cab. That is a winner by itself. 1986 Dodge trucks seemed quite good.

RIP Lee Iacocca the person who gave the World the Minivan, Lamborghini Diablo and Dodge Viper.
Iacocca was the man. Good thing he and Henry Ford agreed to disagree.
If I could buy a brand new Plymouth Reliant I would. Cheap to own, simple and cheap to maintain.
SADLY, WHEN IACOCCA WENT AWAY, SO DID CHRYSLER'S QUALITY.
They made cutbacks, they discontinued the 5/50 warranty, their relabiliity slipped.
So this was before Chrysler had Jeep?
Chrysler acquired JEEP in 1987.

Well he certainly would be better than the options that we have now.
