Live at Let's Rock! Southampton! Includes photos and footage from Live Aid and and a tribute to David Bowie and Freddie Mercury to an amazing version of Bowies "Heroes"!
Anybody who heard David Bowie sing live or even on the radio or vinyl and no matter what song he was singing he made us all feel like heroes. Legend. R.I.P
Having watched Live Aid many many times, what many people won't pick up on is that Thomas Dolby has edited out the bit where Bowie introduces him as "the very brilliant" Thomas Dolby. seems Mr Dolby is a class act.
I worked in Thomas Dolby's pokey little flat in Fulham in the 1980s, when I first arrived at the flat he wasn't there but there was a wall full of gold and silver albums, I had no idea who he was and to be honest never heard his music. I got know him quite well by the end of the job, he told me he was thinking of having a grand piano in the bedroom with a mattress on top of it but realised that certain activities on the bed would knock the piano out tune, we had a good giggle at that. I asked how the music business was, he just smiled and said, same as the building trade, do the job and get paid! He wanted us to be in a video for a song he was doing as clones of him, we politely declined. I met his parents, who were really nice folk, he had a stable door for a back door and steps down into a back yard, a nice touch. I'd forgotten all about that job until now. Thomas, if you read this, I hope the electric grid you have on the living room wall didn't electrocute anyone, also I ,met Dean Garcia and his girlfrend in Crete, they booked a last minute holiday and had the balcony room next to mine and he told me they had visited the your flat. he saw the electrical thing and said you had deck chairs in the living room, no sofas for you then! Dean had been working with the Eurythmics and played me some great studio jams with them, small world ain't it. Shit, that was 1983!
Bowie also lent some class to the 70s, 90s, and after the millennium. Darkstar was a fitting send off. An appropriate way to say goodbye. The most enjoyable Last Words I've ever heard.
After Low Bowie went downhill greatly, coinciding with his cure from drug addiction. He lost something, became derivative, copied others. Rehashed old songs that he’d given away to Iggy Pop. He himself called the 80s his Phil Collins years. After Low he came out with one decent song, Heroes. They that was it. The man who made Diamond Dogs almost single handed ( the best album ever) made that dancing in the street video with Mavis Jagger. It just doesn’t fit. Wasn’t the same person
@@rainwater8135 A considerably more depressing POV than the one I prefer. Not that I necessarily disagree with your assessment. While I intellectually can see where you're coming from and how you could feel that way- I've chosen a more expansive appreciation of music. I might agree that Bowie's greatest work came to it's apex on Low,(or Aladdin Sane or Station to Station) and Heroes was him on the downward slope- still, what an incredible downward slope. Sons of the Silent Age, Dj, Look Back in Anger,Ashes to Ashes, This is not America, it's no Game, Under the God, Amlapura, Shopping for Girls, Hallo Spaceboy, Thru these architects eyes, Looking for Water, Love is Lost. His plummet to earth sounded better than most musicians entire careers, in my not particularly humble opinion. It IS all opinion, of course. It's difficult to tell someone how they feel about music is wrong (unless they say the best band ever is Milli Vanilli). Perhaps I should rephrase that. It's EASY to tell someone how they feel about music is wrong- but it's impossible to say that without at least a fragment of your consciousness realizing there is no ultimate arbiter of taste. It is fundamentally about individuality and the peculiarities that lead us to like the things we like, no matter how repellent that taste may be to other people.
Thomas Dolby is one of the greatest performers of all time. From a fellow synthesist to another I admire him alot and maybe someday in the distant future I will be the one making a tribute for him.
Lucky i got to see bowie live in 83 one time in Anaheim i was just outta high school at the time. Bowie had sounds and music like no other can do, his psychadelic style was rare genius
Wow, the title is no exaggeration. I was only 4 months old, but I get a bit teary to look back at all those who gathered for that noble attempt at heroism, just for one day. *Spectacular tribute, Professor Robertson!*
I Got Tears In My Eyes Watching This . Trying Not To Cry . Wonderful Tribute From A Wonderful Man . Thanks For The Upload , Appreciate It . You Are Loved David Bowie .
1980 I really got in to this David Bowie track , Heroes, when I heard it, it made me very happy. It was a crazy patch in my life, and music just made it so Much better.
It doesn't matter where you go, or what priceless gems you present to an audience, there will always be plebs who will voice their inane babble over it.
One person's priceless gem is another person's bauble. We can babble about the bauble, but in the end, isn't everything in existence uniquely priceless?
And thanks so much for posting this Thomas is such a treat and for anyone that’s ever seen him in concert it’s something you’ll never forget. And this tribute awesome!
David Bowie is the inspiration so many artists in the 70’s & 80’s. The Sex Pistols, Peter Gabrielle, Kate Bush, Madonna and many more. They in turn influenced so many that we listen to today. Bowie is the source!
I was 19 and turned down a ticket to go as I was into Echo and bunnymen, joy division, cure etc etc - went to sutton market to buy a “Frankie Say’s” T shirt as I was buying the shirt spandau were playing. I rushed home and watched the rest on tv - happy days indeed - we loved Thomas from his Thompson Twins to Europa and the pirate twins days -
Very fitting tribute, haunting memories of his passing. Bowie was such a incredible talent and enormous influence on the modern musical scene that on that Ja 2016 day the world of music suffered a significant loss for the ages.

VERY well put...

I watched Live Aid many times as well and noticed that too. Both were modest, classy & made great music.
Just been to see that, what a modest talent Mr Dolby is!!
The roar from the crowd after his introduction was massive too! 😌😎👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Up until now I'd only ever known him as the guy who invented surround sound.
@@Revelian1982 wrong Dolby - unrelated to Ray Dolby THE inventor/Founder of Dolby labs & its noise reduction recording technology
@@markbritton2175 Oh, so they were brothers.

The echo In The voice samples was deliberate indicating he’s no longer with us but we have Bowie’s echoes. Nice artistic choice
Someone had to follow Queen that day. Not sure anybody else could've done it so seamlessly.
This performance brings me back to that unforgettable July 13th 1985.
Bowie Is Immortal.
Great tribute, mr. Dolby.
I was there ! X
Always appreciated Thomas Dolby. Now I know him to be a good man.
Crying now.
Same. 2022 and same.
Mee too...
Very Very Cool. I wish Thomas Dolby would come out with a new album, wouldn't that be great.
His new novel is coming out this month - June 2024 - and I hope to see him at the Totally Tubular Festival in DC in July.
Thomas Dolby and David Bowie are the two giants!!! Fantastic instrumental by Dolby. What a great musician, man.
Bowie & Dolby gave the 80s class!

I never got the opportunity unfortunately but he was, and always will be, one of my heroes and an inspiration in my life.

Crying and have stopped breathing...
A beautiful tribute to The Guv'nor.
I saw a version of this last night in Texas. It was a gentle, moving tribute to a great musician from another great musician. It was magical.
David didn't like to fly. The reversion into characters was a defense response. Excellent as always Thomas!
There's something in my eye. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.

Well done Thomas all respect and thanks for this great tribute to the Duke .
I got to see him perform this in an intimate setting with 200 people at a synthesizer convention in Los Angeles in March 2019.
Afortunado
Birchmere club in DC…it was transcendent and what, thirty years after the LP Flat Earth came out? Soooo GOOOOD!
