  • Video: An evening spotting high speed trains at the North Downs Tunnel (or Blue Bell Hill Tunnel) on High Speed 1. This was filmed from Bridge 750 situated by the southern end of the tunnel and on the historic path called Pilgrims Way.
    At this point of HS1 the linespeed is at its peak so most services here were doing the full 300kmh / 186mph (excluding the Javelins of course), that being said though by sunset there was a fault on the London-bound line which caused a 374 to do a rare manoeuvre of using the 'wrong' line. Then as a knock on effect there were a few speed restrictions on the 'down' line and later the reopened 'up' line with a 395 & 374 crawling by slowly into the tunnel. Things returned to normal by the very end with a London-bound 373 going by at full speed into the tunnel.
    TRAINS INCLUDED:
    Eurostar Class 373 TGV TMST e300s & Class 374 Velaro e320s and Southeastern Class 395 Javelins.

    As someone from the United States, I've always found HS1 to be an engineering marvel. The way they have that section of railway entrenched in a forest is amazing. Not to mention how fast those trains are, it makes me wish we had those here in America.

      Wait until you see HS2 runs even longer and faster, There is also a rumour that one of the companies to provide the HS2 trains have designed multi level trains bit like the Duplex TGV

      @@Cyborgdelta1 I'm looking forward to it. I may move to London JUST for that reason.

      @@Cyborgdelta1That sounds cool! Have you seen the talk in the media about expanding HS2 to an 'X' shape? It would go down to Bristol, Cardiff + maybe more.

      @@callofduty12316 I have heard of some thing like that but I do know that Boris is very keen on the idea of an underwater rail link to Northern Ireland and to Scotland, if certain political issues don't get in the way first.

    I love how you can actually hear the zap of the pantograph arcing over all the noise of the train! Always surprises me the amount of water spray they pick up from the wires when its rainy.

    Another great video, did well to capture that crossover near the end! Also loved the way the sparks off the pantograph lit up the tunnel at night 👌🏾

    Awesome video of high speed action and nice one for seeing some 373's too. :)

      You're welcome. It is fortunate that some 373's are still in service on some Eurostar services. :)

    Am I correct in stating there is never a crossover in the tunnel because they haven't fitted a near 3km tunnel with pressure shafts/ventilation shafts due it being under an area of outstanding natural beauty?

    • @Pixel_pixie963
      @Pixel_pixie963 Před 5 lety

      There is a crossover near the tunnel at Nashenden.

    • @MATNJAN1
      @MATNJAN1 Před 3 lety

      Correct. They had to build the tunnel a specific way, building up the layers in accordance with pressure testing. They actually got to a stage where they had made it too safe, so started cutting back a bit to save cash. Therefore some stages of the tunnel are thicker than others.
