  • We all know he feeling of craving our favorite mal, and not wanting to get off the couch. Maybe its raining outside? A blizzard? A full blown pandemic that kept everyone in their homes? Whatever the reason, the market of ordering by app, and 'food delivery' in general, has had a storied past!
Place an order on your favorite app, and as you wait for the food to arrive, have a look at the history which made that all possible!

"Is food delivery super-convenient, or just super-pricey?"
    Yes.

    • @atlbrysco6198
      @atlbrysco6198 Před 3 měsíci

Totally agree, mrWendybird - not only do they charge a delivery charge, but they also force you to order through their app which (for whatever restaurant/fast-food joint you choose) they put a premium on top of the price of the restaurant - some up to $6 or $8 dollars per dish! Just opening something like GrubHub, choosing a restaurant, and perusing the menu, you can also go to the restaurant's website and see the same menu - the price difference is astounding. It's no wonder that these services flourish and make huge profits... it's just a shame they don't pay their delivery people any better.
This model has also brought the usual problem of technology with multiple providers and "He said, She said" - for example, for a friend of mine in KY that was stuck with no Thanksgiving, I went to the Bob Owens website and ordered a Thanksgiving Meal for six (he was with friends) - it cost me over $100 and I (living in GA) requested the restaurant to have the meal delivered (Bob Owens uses DoorDash). Thanksgiving comes, and I get a call from my friend that he and his friends never received it. I called Bob Owens, and they swore that they produced the meal and handed it off to DoorDash, so I needed to call them to work it out. I called DoorDash, and they said that their "customer" was Bob Owens restaurant, and if I wanted to work it out I had to call them. No one would accept blame, my friend (and his cohorts) never got a meal, and I got screwed out of over $100.
Food delivery services (other than the original, owned by the restaurant) suck - and I hope they burn in hell.
      Have a good night!

Exactly for the people complaining about the fees okay, go spend your own $4 a gallon gasoline wear out your own tires, wear out your own brakes and go stand in a crowded restaurant line, because that's exactly what delivery drivers do wear out their cars, burn their gas and stand and line all day!!! And these greedy delivery companies make all the profit!!!! I literally the other day saw them offer me a delivery for a $1.50 lol let me ask you a question, would you bring me food for $1.50 when gases $4 a gallon? lol basically if you're a delivery driver you work for tips because you don't make s*** from these companies, barely enough to cover your gas You're working for tips, I don't deliver to anyone that doesn't tip plain and simple!! As any waiter will tell you if can't afford to tip then you can't afford to eat out!

Uber Eats has gotten prohibitively expensive in the Seattle area. The "service fee" has gone way up and they charge $5 flat on every delivery as a "compliance fee", throwing a hissy fit because the city of Seattle and state of Washington won't let them pay their drivers what amounted to well below minimum wage anymore. The one bone they've thrown the customers is that the "no tip, no trip" ethos is gone; the drivers now have to earn their tips.

Refuse to order delivery from an establishment that does not hire their delivery drivers as employees and pay a fair wage, For example, Doordash does not hire employees as "Dashers". Theses "Dashers" or delivery drivers are independent contractors. In my state, many delivery drivers are considered servers and paid as low as $2.13/hr. While the company charges customers about 5 bucks for a "delivery fee" that many drivers don't receive a penny of.

A lot of pizza franchises near me have stopped hiring delivery drivers and instead outsourced to DoorDash. I hate this because if they get my order wrong, it turns into a battle between DoorDash and the pizza joint arguing over who is at fault. Once a DoorDash driver forgot to bring my drink the driver claimed it was the stores fault. The store said it was the drivers fault. I said I didn’t care who’s fault it was and just wanted a refund for it since I never got it.
Long story short it took almost month before the pizza joint finally gave me the dang refund. I had to actually track down the franchise owner and privately contact him just to get my $2 back smh

The history of food delievery and drive thru restaurants are very interesting, but I'm surprised Jack In The Box wasn't mentioned. Back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, they had a unique drive thru, with a clown head on it that would take your order, and the design of the drive thru mimicked an actual Jack In The Box, same with the signs on or near the restaurant. Said clown would be named Jack and would change over the years. In the 1970s, there were animated commercials with a cartoony version of Jack as well as his friends The Jack In The Box Bunch, similar to McDonaldland. Paul Winchell, OG voice of Tigger and inventor of the artificial heart did the voice of Jack and other characters, most noticeably Onion Ring Thing. There's a few ads and comics on CZcams and they are really charming. Jack was dropped in the 80s leading to a dark age for the chain, made even worse in 1993 when Jack In The Box had one of the worst E. Coli outbreaks ever. So, in 1994, Jack would be brought back as a businessman and is still around. Honestly, Jack In The Box's interesting history would make a fantastic Weird History Food video.

Pre statement before hate collides, (I live in southern Indiana)The fact many people order doordash and others regularly have no right to then argue they cant afford a living off minimal salary means I've used them a handful of times just to test. want some cheap taco bell? hand over your 20 dollar bill for 3 items off the value menu with tip (I at least tip my drivers respectively). I live in a smaller rural area that offers this and it's a joke. Maybe in the dense city it works? but damn Doordash wants to charge you premium steakhouse prices for a fast food delivery. Maybe it's just a mishmash due to area nuances. But the thing for me I hate to be mean is when I see the videos of people complaining they cant survive off their wage but then show on the same social media they get food regularly from delivery apps. like yeah... I'm not gonna feel sorry for you struggling to make ends meet when you order this regularly, it's called living within your means.

Towards the end of The Original Kung Fu TV series, there was a small scene in which a Chinese restaurateur took the orders of a Sheriff to bring him his lunch. A big tasty lunch, as I remember. 😋

It’s not like super pricey it’s too damn expensive. What people need to do is get off their asses go down and get food. Yeah may be very inconvenient but it’s better than straining your wallet and if people would realize this, the food cost 10 times more when you have it delivered because you gotta pay the driver a fee as well to so in reality, you’re just paying 10 times more than originally cost if you just gotten off your ass and gone down to get food

For anyone complaining about the fees and the tips go get your own food!! food magically shows up to your door it's not free and I'm not running a charity! as any waiter or waitress will tell you "if you can't afford to tip then you can't afford to eat out" same thing with deliveries The delivery driver makes 90% of their income from the tips The companies pay as little as $1.50 Will you bring me a bunch of food to my doorstep for $1.50? Lol f*** no!! so the tip is what you're actually paying the delivery person to bring you the food!(And yes 100% of the tip goes to the delivery person despite popular rumors) which is why I don't accept any deliveries without a tip I'm not running a charity!!!! And my landlord will not take good wishes and hope for in Lou of rent, just a thought remember only Kings and que ens used to be able to afford to have food brought to their doorstep or bedroom so if you can't afford to tip or you think it's too expensive then cook your own damn food or go to the restaurant and get your own food and wear out your own car and spend your own gas!!!!

I feel bad for the female narrator for this channel. I love the male narrator as much as anyone else, but people give the female narrator too much shit when she's clearly doing a good job as well.
Has to feel terrible for her everytime someone comments on the "wrong narrator" being used.

I eat take out but I'm too cheap to have it delivered. Not that lazy.
Also I can't imagine how gross a Big Mac and Fries would be after they've sat around waiting for the delivery guy to pick them up and get them to you. I don't mind McDonalds, but you have to get it and eat it immediately, because as soon as it starts to go cold it looses it's appeal. Every time I stop by McDonalds there's a line of delivery services picking up orders, so someone's good with it.

Extenuating circumstances prevent some people from picking up their own food, so they need those services. Other people might have only one car in the family and sharing it makes it impossible to drive somewhere themselves. Plus many more; you can't simply chalk it down to laziness.
Plus that line is proof not everyone thinks like you. Shocking, isn't it?

why pricey? it's about the same if you go there (sometimes you get offers from the app or you have the pay the delivery) but in the most cases it's about the same.
delivery makes people more lazy, fat and creates more garbage. that's the problem.

Anyone else notice that the weird history videos where this lady narrates are always veiled commercials/corporate ads? When the guy narrates, you know, the one who's actually funny, it's always about actual weird history. This wisconsin soccer mom or whoever sounds like his HR boss or something and is basically unlistenable.
