5.11 maverick assaulters belt review. Design flaw?

  • Traditionally male belts have the buckle on the left side. This belt is designed to contour your waste, but you must wear it with the buckle on the left side. Is that a design flaw?

    Everyone disliking this video doesn't understand that this is a contoured belt that is only intended to be worn one way. If you flip the belt over, the contour is completely wrong. I found this out after buying the belt but thankfully I have a 5.11 store 20 miles away and I just took it back. Good video.

      It IS a big deal because the excess belt velcro's back to the right side where your holster goes. now you've got two layers of belt Velcro together and the holster won't fit over the belt. That IS a problem! Unless you're not wearing it as a gun belt.

    Not really a design flaw. The loop there is designed for rappelling / belaying if need be. Most of the population is right handed and for right handed individuals, the rope attachment point needs to be either centered or left of center for adequate braking action during a rappel/belay. Since they cant put the carabiner loop on the velcro portion, and the Velcro has to be on the female side of the buckle with their tapered male buckle design, in order for the rappel feature to work for the vast majority of the population (right-handers) the belt must be oriented this way. I guess it could still be seen as a design "flaw" but it's much more than the simple oversight that this video makes it out to be. Not to mention that you're the only one that seems to have a problem with it.

    • @jarotex
      @jarotex Před 3 lety +3

      First of all it's not a repelling belt. It's a gun belt first! And you're right most people are right-handed so they carry their holster on their right side. That is a problem because the excess belt doubles up on the right side where the velcro is. Now your holster won't fit over the double layers of belt.

    Now I know what you're saying but have you thought that maybe the reason why the writing is upside down on the buckle is 'cause the wearer can read it when he/she looks down? By having it upside down on the buckle means that when the wearer angles the buckle and looks down to read, it's the right way up.

  • @jarotex
    @jarotex Před 3 lety +3

    YES YES YES!!! Thank God! I've been looking all over the internet trying to figure out why this belt is upside down and you are the only one to point it out. Not only is it a problem because the buckles upside down, but your excess belt velcros back to your right side exactly where your holster goes. Now your holster won't fit on the belt because it's double thick! No one else is talking about this so I was starting to think I was doing something wrong. Now I know to ditch this belt and find another Cobra buckle belt. I'm a big fan of 511 but what the hell are they thinking? Thank you!

      It's not about aesthetics. You're right it's about function. Most people are right-handed and the problem is you cannot put a holster on the right side because the excess belt is now double thick where the holster goes. it's easy to tell who is using this to actually carry a gun and who's not.

  • @GageThompson
    @GageThompson Před 8 lety +4

    If your right handed like the majority of people and if you carry AIWB at 1 o'clock which a lot of people are doing now you would be pretty pissed about having a huge loop in the way. I think a lot of thought went into the design of this belt. Also is it really that big of a deal having it flipped? It's a utilitarian belt not a fashion belt.

  • @roycrave2420
    @roycrave2420 Před 9 lety +1

    i understand man. the belt is not the usual straight column when spread on a flat surface unlike regular belts. i got to try one at a store and you can't simply switch female buckle sides 'cause it would defeat the "gimmick" orientation of ergonomics. you switch it, it would feel uncomfortable around the waist since it's upside-down already.

    I thoroughly agree, for the price point these belts come in at more thought should have been made in the fabrication of this belt. Having to thread this belt in the other direction would be a mild irritation. I would hope that in the future they correct this. Great video thank you for your insight.

    I agree that its odd. Its a great belt but when I went to put it on it was hard to handle as all of my belts sit the same way except this one. The other is yes the male end is smaller to fit most belt loops but the accessory loop sticks out soo far and is rigid so I actually have to feel the belt through before I put my non BDU pants on. It is super comfortable though i will give it that.

    Bought one about 4-5 days ago, same issues with it that your talking about. Taking it back on Saturday; for 100 bucks they can make the damn thing the right way. The other comments here about the contour not mattering, it does. And threading the belt through belt loops on a daily basis backwards is a pain in the a$&. Some may not wear this on the daily so that part might not matter, but I got it for that purpose to replace the trainers belt I used for 3 years loved the belt but the buckle style got old after a few years.

    Question, do you see a disadvantage if your a lefty and you do use the rigging loop on the left side of you with the right hand as the braking hand which should feel natural for a lefty? It is an expensive belt and I hope they thought this through. I know it isn't designed to be a rappelling tool unless it is a vital emergency since they rated the loop at 600 static lbs. when I called 5.11. I don't think they even know what the belt limitation specifications are except for the belt buckle printed spec. They should know the full specification limitation for that amount of money they are charging. Matter of fact it should be rated close to any climbing harness for the amount of money they are charging.

    i really dont think the buckle position is a problem at all... at most it would take some getting used to feed the belt thru the beltloops on your pants.... what i want to know is if you could use it as an emergancy rappelling rig, since those cobra buckles are said to be able to do that.

    Get over yourself. It makes no difference with her belt comes from the left or the right. The belt is perfectly symmetrical and it works really well. It’s a basic belt and serve the purpose for the function in which it was intended. To see the belt is more comfortable in one orientation over the other is absolutely ridiculous.

    Can I ask you tho, I just bought that 511 belt and I was going to carry inside the waistband. I was told the contour was so that it would hold more weight (this obviously being with a owb ) should I flip the belt to wear the buckle is correct so that when I put my holster it pulls the right way? Or should I wear it how it was designed to and just stick my holster inside

    it's not a design flaw it's a personal preference that you don't like. The loop is designed for rappelling n stuff most people are right-handed therefore they couldn't put it on the right side because that would interfere with the velcro and it wouldn't be stable or safe, is it really that difficult to put your belt on a different way? (No it's not! it's just personal preference)

    • @jg8273

      +Chris Miller Thing is a F*CKING bitch to thread in your belt loops because the stupid loop thingy on the male end. PLUS the fact the male end is not removable. I bought another brand of belt with a "Cobra" buckle on Amazon that was only $45 and its USA made. With that one, the useless loop thingy is on the other side (female end of the buckle). Also the male end of the buckle can be completely removed to make threading it through the belt loops a whole hell a lot easier. There are endless complaints about the 5.11 belt, the maker of this video is not alone with his opinion. Plus you can find a real cobra belt with a metal D ring istall right on the buckle that is actually rated for 3,000-5,000 lbs.

      Normally speaking, most male belts are made to be worn from right to left (counter clockwise around the waist when looking down, so the buckle and tail ends up on the left of the fly of the trousers).

  • @seacebedo
    @seacebedo Před 8 lety

    So, I understand the argument of the labels being upside down. But why can't you use the belt upside down again? I am actually thinking that the "tail" end (that adds the second layer of material after it goes through the female buckle and velcro back onto itself) would actually be better wrapped around the left side of the body. I carry in the appendix position and would like as little amount of material in the front and to the right of my midline. Also with this buckle design, is the male part of the buckle not small enough to thread through most belt loops? Just wondering because it looks smaller than the buckle on my current belt from SOE.
    Anyway, just brainstorming. I haven't been able to put my hands on one of these belts yet, but it actually doesn't look like a poorly designed belt from just looking at it, other than the labels being upside down.
