China-Australia relations: A step forward?

On June 15, Chinese Premier Li Qiang visited Australia, the second stop on his tour of New Zealand and Malaysia. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the visit "another step forward" in stabilizing relations, which had declined since 2018 due to the "China threat" theory. Since Albanese took office in 2022, trade relations have improved and the public perception of China is slowly getting better. Can these positive trends continue? Can Australia balance its U.S. alliance with its economic partnership with China?

The problem with the relations between China and Australia is that it is a trilateral relation. Australia does not have its own independent foreign relations policy, she has always to factor in the wish of a third party.

Exactly. China and Australia by themselves really do not have any problem with each other on a single issue. All of the problems Australia have with China is because of them following U.S foreign policy against China.

As long as Australia keeps seeing issues with China from only their side of the coin, it will not be a smooth relationship.
To understand China, Australia should see the struggles that China and the Chinese went through from being an almost wholly agrarian farming society into a powerfully industrialized country in the world today. Australians should recognize that the invasion and subjugation of China by 7 European nations plus one Asian (Japan) that has hardly emerged itself from barbarism, had inflicted upon China a deep traumatic scar into the nation's soul, referred to as "the 100 years of humiliation". Australia should have some empathy towards the Chinese in the Japanese Rape of Nanking where some 350,000 Chinese were massacred and the Japanese Unit 371 program where live Chinese civilians were used for biological experiments such as vivisection in which those were China's own "holocaust" experience. And putting all those together over the last 200 years, one can see just what China's position is today and why she behaves the way that she has to when she sees all those foreign warships assembling in her waters once again with the Japanese being stirred into taking up arms again "to oppose China".
Australia talks about itself being a sovereign nation that has its own views and opinions which should be respected. However, to be honestly fair, so too, should China's views and opinions be also respected and not scorned or mocked. For Australia to keep on harping up the issue on the Uyghurs in Xinjiang without conducting its own independent studies and in fact, even ignoring the United Nations own report on Xinjiang as well as the World Islamic Movement that did their own investigations and found nothing that has been reported by some unfriendly nations with their own agenda, makes it hypocritical and obvious that we are not beating our own drums to our own tune but that of someone else's and it is definitely not China's.

"Australia talks about itself being a sovereign nation that has its own views and opinions which should be respected"
Problem is, we aren't. We are a us vassal. And still have uk governor general as our head of state.
as long as we are joined at the hip security wise and strategically to those two countries which are anti China, how can we have our own independent strategic foreign policy?
We can't. We need to do like NZ and put more distance between us. Ban all usa nuclear subs and weapons like nz did. And then suffer from USA removing us as a alliance partner(even if there is still ANZUS treaty).
Only after such measures can china even begin to think of Australia as independent sovereign state instead of a US vassal.
Everything that's happening now is just surface level stuff. It can never be a real strategic relationship that has trust and true goodwill behind it. Australia has destroyed it since Morrison. It will need to do another 50 years of good will to rebuild what we had before Morrison.

You are right, however most Australians have a complex perspective of China.
First, Australia being on the edge of Asia, it feels fearful, no matter whether Australia believes it’s racist or not, it’s built on racist ideals, it’s primarily ruled by white and Anglo Saxons labeled anyone not white as savages, it’s own indigenous, Asians, Africans, Pacific Islanders etc, white was considered superior, along with Christianity, this all lingers today.
Second, in the 80’s we were afraid of Indonesia, and Japan, way back in Australia’s history, Chinese gold miners were a threat, even later, having a white only immigration policy , Australia’s extreme Human Rights issues are quite recent and still continue in many respects.
Thirdly, Australians have a view of China and Chinese from the past, I’ve heard Australians who think China has no significant military, one believed Australia could easily defeat China, without US help, others believe that China can only make cheap toys and has not ability to achieve high tech. Ignorance rules the day but thankfully not all Australians believe such waffle.
Before we in the west make criticisms of China “or any other country” we should first examine ourselves and be brave enough to change, and also be willing to accept the changes China has made to itself.
We are different cultures, civilizations, different populations, different struggles, if we in the west can’t exactly articulate why we can’t understand each other and can only revert to hostility, then our hostility and misunderstandings belong entirely to us, not China or the Chinese.

    • @user-sf1nq9uj7p
      @user-sf1nq9uj7p Před 2 měsíci +5

@@esplace3023 I agree, that Australians having not experienced a similar history that the Chinese had to go through, it would be difficult to place oneself into the shoes of others unless one has a great empathy for others as well as deep understanding for oneself in self reflection. This doesn't seem to be a quality trait found in most western culture all that much. Christianity is supposed to teach that throughout the New Testaments with its many parables but not many are good students - or perhaps its because of bad teachers.
For Australians to feel that the Chinese or the Indonesians would want to invade this continent is sort of paranoic neurosis and is incongruous to the real deal - Indonesian fishermen were landing on the northern parts of the Australian continent long before Dutch navigator, Willem Janszoon and Spanish explorer Luis Vaz de Torres in 1606 were recorded as the first Europeans to have made contact with the land while Cook didn't even arrived until 1770. The Indonesians didn't lay claim to the Australian continent back earlier but they could have.
Then, there is the question - why would China even logically want to take over Australia? What does this continent really have to offer China in real value to want to sacrifice their own blood and treasure in a huge way while meeting absolute hostility from a mainly White society that will not acquiesce before the Chinese government? Taking over Australia will provide the Chinese with nothing less than a monumental headache that not even a trillion-trillion aspirin (analgesic) tablets will cure while whatever natural mineral resources that Australia has can be easily sourced through bilateral trade or from other countries. Common sense will tell one that there is absolutely no economic gain to be had for a Chinese invasion of Australia while expecting a retaliatory attack in return upon its magnificent modern cities and infrastructure.
This paranoia probably stems from the fact that Australia is so far removed physically from Europe and its perceived isolation is what created this neurosis which is due to an innate feeling of insecurity. While modern transport and communications have shrunk the distances, this feeling of isolation is still deep within the Australian psyche and thus, the Anglo-European ethnic groups feels more secured when they ally themselves more with their counterparts halfway around the other side of the world than try to make close friends with their next door neighbors in Indonesia and China. It is a typically juvenile, un-grown-up way of looking at life but we humans have a tendency towards tribalism. Whether we can grow up and become properly mature in time will be interesting to watch.

Fundamentally Australia is still a constitutional monarchy, its "head" is the King of England, a country whose foreign policy is anti-China and is aligned strongly with the USA’s win-lose international policies. Improvement of bilateral relationships between Australia and China would therefore always be coloured by its link to its imperial connections and lineage. Until Australia becomes a republic, it is unlikely anything fundamental would improve in Australia-China relationships beyond "skin-deep" photo-ops.

So for Australia to spend that much money on the Aukus deal to primarily serve the foreign policy interest of America is madness in my view. The main beneficiaries of AUKUS military deals that Australia made are primarily arms contractors from the USA and UK. Australian politicians are unwise. I hope the Australian electorate will do better and elect more responsible & responsive politicians to serve Australia's interest solely and not that of the UK and USA.

Nope. Australia will continue to veer off the track. China is giving them a grace period and it is ending soon. USA and EU already in arms to contain China. Australia will not be left out. China should import less from Australia and import more from BRICS countries.

@@socrates5647 Yeah because thats all China have and will do, flexing its power against Philippines. Well for us Filipinos we don't need to counter China's power because we sided the peaceful way of following the UNCLOS. We are just at a distance watching China shaming itself.
