The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is a marvelous group and organization. Gustav Mahler was and is an absolute gift to humanity. I truly thoroughly enjoyed conductor Rafael Payare's interpretation of this classic work. The 5th demands deep work from each of the musical sections of the orchestra. And Rafael Payare is conducting minus a score. He is totally engrossed and has a thorough understanding of what Mahler is demanding. The brass section's lead trumpet must head the multifaceted harmonic and melodic structures that drive this orchestral work. And the string and woodwind sections of the orchestra display wonderful passages of technical, melodic and harmonic brilliance. It's early on a Thursday morning and I am thoroughly engrossed in this piece. And the percussion section is providing continuous support. I am definitely going to purchase this masterpiece. And the orchestra's diversity is illuminating to both my soul and spirit. It simply amazes me that Gustav Mahler absolutely had so much creativity traveling throughout his body, spirit and soul. Simply SUPERB!!

I attended this concert. What a magnificent experience! The Detroit Symphony definitely deserves much more credit than it gets (I might be biased as this is my home orchestra). In a couple of weeks I am going to see them perform Carmina Burana as well as a new set of Paganini Variations by 11 different composers. Looking very much forward to once again experience this phenomenal orchestra!

I grew up in the Detroit area so the DSO is my "home orchestra" as well. They are definitely underrated. I felt this way back then, I feel this way now.

I'm stunned how transparent and structurally aware this performance is, yet in the same time full of passion. I've heard some details that are not audible in most performances. Wonderful job with this wonderful diverse orchestra.

I agree, he's always got his eye on the prize and keeps pushing forward, most convincing Mahler 5 I've heard in a while, great playing too, they stick to him like glue.

This group has a warm/deep sound, and it's nice to hear an interpretation of Mahler 5 without so much "edge". I like hearing some of the low string parts in places that I normally don't. Bravo to principal horn Karl Pituch, as always!

At some point I noticed the conductor is working without a podium or a score. I suppose those would be impediments to Mr. Payare's full-body conducting style. (Did he learn that from Leonard Bernstein?) But to keep track of a score like that in your head! WOW!
Hard to tear myself away from this performance!

Not heard this conductor before, gotta say I can see why just about every fine orchestra he''s guested at want him back to take over the orchestra for an entire contract's worth. He keeps things moving very nicely and doesn't overdo the rubato, it feels just about right so that that feeling of momentum is constant, yet we hear so much of Mahler's intricate writing along the way, especially difficult in this symphony of all of his as he was exploring a much more contrapuntally complex language than he had previously, there's just so many lines moving in & out of one another. He's getting the orchestra playing very lucidly, plenty of depth & range and just holding back a bit on the power which makes it all the more impactful when the orchestra does actually unleash where they're supposed to, at key moments. Great performance from an orchestra who have been going through truly awful times in recent years, even before the kapow of the pandemic. The DSO have always been in the shadow of the likes of the SFSO, the Cleveland, the NYPO, the Philly (in past years at least), but when truly great conductors like Dorati stick around an orchestra like the DSO, you know there's a reason why. Keep it up DSO! And looking forward to hearing more of Payare too, great video.

Grandissima esecuzione!

I thought I'll put it on & have a listen to the 1st movement, see how it pans out. First time I've listened to Mahler 5 all the way through for a long time (overkill having heard it so many times in past years), such was Payare's impressive account of this symphony, constantly driving forward but losing very little of all that myriad detail, best Finale I've heard for a long time. The control & range of this orchestra is really impressive too!

After that horrible strike and the winter the musicians had to endure, that first Dvorak concert back was so sad. Through Leonard Slatkin’s care, exceptional new hires (Hunter Eberly, trumpet, wow!), the orchestra is in very fine shape. A world class 5th, here. Bravo all.

After listening to most of the famous versions of Mahler 5 (Abbado, Bernstein, Simon Rattle) I found this one very unique. I think the conductor and the orchestra had a very strong characteristic attached to this performance, especially the final climax I think the contrast between brass and string are extremely strong, which is very impressive.
