    Her stats are absolutely amazing and she is obviously smart, but schools usually don't look for the perfect student, yes they do look at your grades, and of course those are important, but they also look at where you are from, your background, and all that stuff because they want a unique class, and another thing is that with your application you need to make your admissions officer feel something, wether it's you make them laugh or cry, or really anything, this isn't hate, it's just for the people that think that grades are the only thing that matter

      I honestly think my essays and bad luck played a role in my rejection, but there’s no way to know entirely. My dad actually contacted someone from admissions at Dartmouth and they said they made their decision because other people had a more competitive application than I did in my major. They also said my extracurriculars were all over the place (Spanish club, dance, leadership, soccer coaching), which I’m still a little confused about lol. PSA The reason she didn't get into the ivies even with good stats is that ivies and other competitive applicant schools want students who, yes, have good grades and have proven they can survive the rigorous academic part, but also pursue something deeply that they are passionate about, hopefully, related to what they want to study (ex for an intended comp sci major: summer internship in computer science + starting a program that teaches coding to an underserved community + taking rigorous comp sci classes + being a leader on the robotics team). Colleges especially want someone who has given back to the community, such as starting a program that helps kids outside of your school. Yes, part of her decisions may have been bad luck, but if you want to get into an ivy, you can't JUST get good grades and participate in a few clubs and think luck will take you the rest of the way. I don't mean this in a bad way, I'm just trying to give honest advice to those who may be applying to colleges in the future.

    • @NishaRockwell
      @NishaRockwell  Před 3 lety +4

      Thank you so much! There isn't too much you're expected to do in eight grade (I didn't take the ACT yet, I didn't know what I wanted to major in, and I didn't even know what colleges to look at). I know a lot of my classmates took the ACT near the end of eight grade to get a feel for the test, which I wish I did. Try to get in contact with people who work in something you're interested in. For example, I was interested in becoming a pediatrician, so I started talking to pediatricians or just watching my doctor whenever I visited to see if it's something I would actually enjoy (which helped me realize I don't want to be a pediatrician). Also try finding something to help you stand out, whether it's a leadership role, community service, or an extracurricular. For example, I was in student leadership, performed classical Indian dancing, and danced for charity events. Obviously you don't have to do all of these during eight grade, but dipping your toes into these things now will help you a lot during high school!

I had a friend who was ranked #6 with a 3.96 GPA and a 1440 SAT and he got accepted into Georgia Tech with no significant extracurriculars either(both of them applied into the same class/year you did). I am no trying to bring race into this but they were both white, so maybe the college discriminated against them? Perhaps similar to the way Harvard does do those with Asian heritage (ongoing lawsuit currently). Anyway, what I am getting at is, you were so much more qualified for these schools and yet did not get into them. It makes no sense at all.

      Don't lose hope! It varied on the application, to be honest. Georgia Tech was my first application and I didn't like the college that much, so I think I spent about 2 hours overall on that application. I ended up touring the campus a few weeks after I submitted and fell in love, but I was scared I didn't spend enough time on the application. I ended up getting into it though. Harvard and Princeton probably took me the longest, Princeton had a lot of writing and Harvard was my early application, I wanted it to be perfect. I honestly can't give a guess on how long it took to do those essays since I would write rough draft, final, look over it, etc. I spent a lot of time though. I definitely recommend either a family member or an older friend to look over your essays to give recommendations though! One of my friends got their friend from Harvard to look over his essays, and my dad looked over mine. Really nice to get different perspectives

    Guys, please stop loading your college lists with Ivies and schools with admit rates of less than 20-25%, much less than 10-12%. Harvard and Stanford are 5% or less. It’s never really about you anyway, it’s more about the institutions objectives not “east coast elitism”. We never know exactly what those objectives are. And the super selective schools have enough high quality applicants 3, 4 and 5 x over, so it’s still a lottery.
    The schools want a ton of applicants. Beyond a nice little revenue stream, they want low admit rates and high yield rates.

    • @NishaRockwell
      @NishaRockwell  Před 3 lety +2

      I completely agree that it's about the institutions' objectives and a lottery, but I think if you believe you have a good shot at getting into one of them, then go for it. I'm glad I loaded my lists with these colleges, maybe I should've dropped a few I wasn't too interested in. If applications weren't so expensive and my ego wasn't hurt as bad, I would've had 0 regrets

    To all those that are posting that this was bad luck, you’re wrong! First of all, she is fortunate and quite deserving to get off the wait list at GTech and UVA. This year many competitive schools went deeper into their waitlists. A 35 ACT, perfect or near perfect GPA are just table stakes or the ante for the Ivy and Ivy plus schools she applied to. She was likely the victim of 1) terrible counseling, likely from a public school that can’t even tell you which State Duke and Yale are in, 2) less than stellar applications and essays which she herself admits (you have to bring your A+ game as an untagged student and 3) an extracarricular profile which left me confused.
    Why apply to Harvard REA? That’s a criminal misuse of the all important early card that you need to play well. The only reason for the deferral was that Harvard was still eyeing the possibility of Malian sure it took applicants from Alabama. But that’s all. And the fact that not even Emory and Vandy placed her on their waitlist means that the essay and Recommendation letters were not what they expected. When you apply to an Ivy League school ask yourself the following questions 1) are you black or Hispanic? 2) are you a legacy, 3) are you being recruited for an athletic program 4) has a department taken interest in an artistic talent and /or 5) did you attend a target or feeder independent or elite public school ? If the answer to all of these questions is no ,your chances are already slim and only a cohesive and breathtaking EC profile and essays to match will even get you to be considered.
    And applying to these schools as an Asian applicant to anything science related is also major malpractice. Positioning and differentiation is key.

      If you want to apply to a single college, you can just go to their website and there should be an apply button/link. Since I wanted to apply to multiple colleges, I used CommonApp (www.commonapp.org/). It's a pretty easy website and organized very well!

      Don’t troll her for sharing her experience. I commend her for all of her hard work and remaining positive with certain outcomes that I’m sure were less than ideal for her. Her transparency and positive attitude is something that should be admired. The reality is, she will succeed in whatever college is fortunate to have her. Her advice is valuable.

    • @Sam-sf3so
      @Sam-sf3so Před 3 lety +11

      She applied to pretty much only the top universities in the country. So her chances were so much lower than those that apply to all second-tier and lower. As you can see with her stats, she is a very smart and hard-working student that would likely be able to help someone get the stats that she got. Maybe she can't help you get into Harvard, but even someone that got into Harvard can't do that. Each application is relative compared to the pool of applicants for the year. Where she got rejected this year she could have been accepted next year. It is all very dependant but she obviously has a bright future ahead of her.

Congratulations on Georgia Tech @Nisha !
