You are correct that this method is for larger diameter well pipes. You could still use this method of getting water, but you will need to us a much smaller pipe. That means more work to get the amount of water you need. You will also to trim down the rubber flush valve or us something else like a piece of leather. Still achievable but you will have to get a little creative.

the pipe for my well is only maybe 2". it is in the corner of my basement. i don't know that i could use this method
