Fur Elise, Played on a Zither or Lap Harp, by Debbie Center, World of Harmony Music

  • I'm playing my arrangement of "Fur Elise", which I published in my book, World of Harmony Music, Volume 2. I've also added lyrics which tell the history of this music. In my books, the back of each classical piece of music also includes kid friendly information about the composer and his music!
    Due to the small number of strings on a zither, it would be like playing "Fur Elise" just on the white notes of a piano. I had to adjust the melody some, but hopefully it gives a good representation of this beautiful piece anyway!
    My books are available at:
    www.WorldofHarmonyMusic.com
    www.Amazon.com
    www.eBay.com
    As well as several retail stores. Thanks for watching!

    Thank you! It's not perfect, by any means, but it gives kids a feel for "Fur Elise", and hopefully encourages them to learn more about music.

    My grandparents have a zither they want to give to my which they got for my cousin over a decade ago but he never learned it and just left it at their house. This is really cool I hope I can play it similarly one day with practice.

    Hi there! It isn't normally tuned that way, but you can tune it however you'd like. For my books to work, however, you have to tune it from the bottom to the top in a 2 octave major scale. I hope that helps!
    Debbie :)

    ACHO MUITO LINDO O SOM DESSE INSTRUMENTO! Por esse motivo eu também me senti inspirado para TOCAR, FILMAR E PUBLICAR. Quando tocamos esse instrumento, o som sai perfeito porque as cordas já estão afinadas baseadas em uma escala. Eu uso esse tipo de instrumento até para compor minhas músicas.

      livin abox Actually there are a couple wrong notes in there. The first and second note should be a minor second apart not a major second like this version. Maybe not tuned correctly.

    • @joeyjohnson5850
      @joeyjohnson5850 Před 9 lety +2

      +Da Guvna That would be because of the limitations of the instrument that Debbie mentioned. It can only play the seven notes of a particular diatonic key. Some notes in the original song, such as that D#, are not in the key of A minor (and the instrument may not even be tuned to A minor), so the solution is to simply change a few notes. The instrument is not tuned incorrectly, it's just not made for music with chromaticism

    • @lolobuggah2670
      @lolobuggah2670 Před 9 lety +1

      +Joey Johnson Beethoven is rolling over. I believe it's a mistake to include this song chart with this instrument. It sounds very disturbing to anyone with a decent ear. We ought not rewrite the notes of Beethoven who is possibly the greatest composer of all time.

    • @joeyjohnson5850
      @joeyjohnson5850 Před 9 lety +4

      Da Guvna Perhaps. But I think this video serves its purpose, which is nothing more than to show what this instrument looks and sounds like. And I believe it is also aimed at kids, who probably won't know the difference.
      Could Debbie have picked a better song? Sure. Does it really matter? I'd say no. Not to me, at least. Life is easier when you don't let a few wrong notes bother you :)

      utellmewhtsdapoint These are fantastic instruments with a LONG history. Byzantine, I believe. The gu zheng and koto are Asian equivalents, while the gusli is the Russian variant, and then there's the kantele, kokle, zither- this lap harp is a derivative in terms of design, though in many ways the very same.

    Hi Refrigescere! Good ear! You're right that the opening five notes aren't quite right, which is due to the tuning restrictions of the zither. Imagine playing Fur Elise on only the white notes of a piano. Similar problem. It gives students a feel for Fur Elise, but is by no means perfect. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hi there! Thank you for your comments. Nope, definitely not the whole piece. I can barely make the beginning of Fur Elise kind of work on the 15 notes available on this children's zither. But the point of this arrangement is to introduce kids to a complicated piece like "Fur Elise", so that hopefully they'll want to learn more about music. I'll have to try an arrangement with harmonies. That would be pretty.

    Is the Lap Harp out of tune? Or just in another tuning? I ask because the first notes should be a small second (is it called like that in english?) and not a big second like you play it. I just ordered a Lap Harp and I'm looking forward playing it because it sounds so beautiful :)

      Semicaper A lap harp is tuned to a major scale, usually G major. Minor-key pieces can only be approximated. There is no pedal system to produce sharps and naturals on the same note.

      I note the following in the video's description:
      Due to the small number of strings on a zither, it would be like playing "Fur Elise" just on the white notes of a piano. I had to adjust the melody some, but hopefully it gives a good representation of this beautiful piece anyway!

    It's better to teach children the right melody not the wrong one. Also half the video is you flipping pages. Sorry. Dislike.

      If you watch until the end she explains that some adjustments had to be made to the melody due to the restrictions of having only 15 strings on a zither

      Does your arrogance and presumptiveness make you feel good about yourself? You know nothing of my intentions, so just save it. I have explained that this is simply a representation so that children can get a feel for playing this piece before all the hard work required to play the original piece on a piano. My easy arrangements of classical music have allowed beginning musicians all over the world to feel good about making music, and I've been thanked more times than I can count for sparking the flame of interest in becoming a musician. This is my payment!
