where have I been for the last 2 yrs? Best comparrison ever! I own the MovoVRX 10 Pro. Even closed my eyes on occasion. Interesting results. Picked Movo for tests 1 and 2.... found very similar for test 3 - a tie...and chose Rode NTG for test 4.. BUT also found both VERY similar. Thank you for not processing in post to ensure most complete comparrison. Great work.
Bravo dude, I've watched a handful of comparisons, and yours is the most objective, and the tests are consistent enough that I can be my own judge. Totally agree with you on the results, and the only one I had trouble picking a favorite was test 4. I had ordered a Videomicro which arrived today and for some serendipitous reason it was missing the shockmount and Amazon wouldn't let me exchange it so I returned and figured I'd check out a few reviews on it it before I bought it again. I'll be going with the Movo.

Thank you very much for these tests. After spending the whole day watching all sorts of mic videos I found yours in the end and they were amazing and useful!
After seeing tests with much more expensive microphone and these budget ones - I am surprised that there is almost no difference in audio quality. The difference is mainly in features. And since I am not a professional videographer and my future content is not tech centered I decided to go with one of the bidget options.
I plan to have a 2 device recording setup. A Sony ZV-1 and an iPhone 12. I plan to have a home studio set up and ready to go but I want to be able to some filimng while travelling and I want to buy 2 microphones of the same model so that my audio would be similar and this test helped me a lot!
I have a ZV1 too. Which one did you go with?
I had headphones on and it wasn't very hard to tell the difference. I really like the way you did the blind test. I chose the VXR10 pro on all but the last test. In which the VideoMicNTG was noticably better. But it better be for the price. I'm very impressed by the VXR10 Pro for that price!!
I rated the VXR10 pro best sounding in all tests apart from the one against the AV133, where I rated that best. This was a cool comparison. I believe I used to follow you under a different CZcams account.
This was such a quality video.. after watching a ton of beginner mic videos, this one was the best I came across. Waaay more people should be seeing and appreciating this video. I wonder if you labeled it as something like "What's the best beginner mic?" followed by the current title, you might have more people come across it? Either way, liked and subscribed. :)

Thanks Brian for this compare! It just fills the gap I felt a while ago. Totally agree on Videomicro. It is just like "pushes my ear from inside to the out". It just hurts. I love Rode mics (I use the NT5 and love it), but the Movo 10 and the Pro sounds just much better to my ear, than the videomicro. I own the 10 beside others and love to use it.

I listened while having my morning coffee. Cheers Brian!! Surprisingly, on # 2, I chose the original over the pro. All other answers were like yours. I listened through good headphones on my iPhone. 8plus. I own the vxr10 so I’ll just stick with it. I do however want to get the NTG.

Thanks a lot for this video, you convinced me to get the original VXR10. As someone who is very new into creating content and has been using internal mic, I'm excited to try this. I have been shooting on Fuji Xt4 and internal mic picks up this hissing 'white noise', hopefully this mic will make it better.
For sure bro. Any external mic will be better than the internal. And if you need clear talking audio, a lav mic is your friend.

@@AtomicPixel Cheers bro, I am indeed looking for a lav mic. Even with the shotgun mic, my camera is picking up slight hissing sound. Do you have this with your Fuji at all? They say its the ibis sound.
Pretty crazy what you said in the end of your video they all sound the same when not wearing headphones like they are all good but if you listen really good or pair of headphones in you can tell the little difference in each and everyone of them. Amazing video love it definitely helped me on making the purchase I liked.

I agree about the VXR10Pro in relation to the VXR10. As a Super Cardiod micrphone the VXR10Pro is really more of a redesign of the Movo VXR2021 into a VXR10 form factor. The VXR2021 was a super cardiod michrophone with nice sound and a bulky plastic build on a cheap quality integrated shock mount that really limited its versatility and appeal to consumers. Overall I really like the sound of both of the Movo models in comparison with their similar priced competitors.
Love your channel and info, thanks! I'm specifically looking for an option with Microsoft Teams business meetings to sound good without having a dorky mic or headset visible in the shot. I'm wearing small bluetooth earbuds to hear (which remain quite hidden given how large my face has gotten during Covid). Seems like the VXR10-pro mounted on a boom over my desk chair is the way to go. Do you a cheap boom arm mounted to the desk would be fine? Or should I mount it to the wall to isolate thumps? Also, do you have any examples of what kind of keyboard noise to expect with a setup like this? (Typing notes, etc, during meetings).

Hi Josh! The original VXR10 is my go-to budget recommendation.
So I decided to listen using a simple pair of Apple wired earbuds. I figured that would represent a huge % of what viewers are listening on. I didn't look at what was being compared for each test, so for every pair it was possible that I was listening to any of the 4. I didn't hear the huge differences you heard between the 2 Movos. one time I liked A, and another I liked B. I definitely heard the "thinner" compressed Rode Video Micro vs the fuller Movo, and the NTG was obviously in another league. I BARELY had a preference for the AverMedia, but not anything appreciable. Thanks for the comparison and for your thoughts coming from your foundation of knowledge and experience.
Just grabbed some better, over-the-ear headphones with a fuller range and I could pick out more nuance between the 2 Movos (I felt like the newer one was crisper in its lows than the original, but it actually had lows, unlike the Rode Micro). I still could barely decide between the new Movo and the AverMedia. haha

Great comparison. For whatever reason, the Movo VXR10 PRO sounds better on my PC. I think the PRO has a pretty good sound. Perhaps with a common equipment like my PC or a phone the new MOVO would be fine. I don't know how wrong I am. Your channel is great.

Totally valuable comparison and input - as usual for you! :-) But don‘t keep on thinking that listening to such tests on an iPad doesn‘t allow for some mighty on-the-spot perceptions of differences in tonal character/quality. ;-) In fact, it was dead easy to identify each model. Like you, I‘m a hater of the cheaper Rode, and a lover of the VXR10 (original), which I use and love for indoor stuff (especially due to its richer, warmer, more authentic bass response when playing guitar and singing!). Also have the AverMedia, but don‘t love it so much, for the same reasons you pointed out. Will definitely skip the VSR10 Pro!!! They too strongly upped the upper mids and castrated the bass - ouch! Yes, it sounds crisp and clear, and yes, it therefore cuts really well, and will presumably have no issues with boominess and such. But for a man with a deepish voice, it ain‘t gonna make its way into my studio, so sir-eee! It‘s make me - and especially my singing - sound like Mickey Mouse or something. ;-) As for that scrumptious sound coming out of that Rode VideoMic NTG....well, Brian, you just made a believer out of me. Gonna definitely pick up that one at my financially nearest convenience. Thanks for serving it up to us in this comparison. Why dabble with buying 3 or 4 cheaper mics instead of just going for the best?!

Great video. I’m fairly new and looking to step up my audio. I use a $30 lav mic into my iPhone 12 Pro.... if I buy the Tascam DR-05X, what software do you use to edit and sync audio? Can I just use iMovie? Thanks for the help.
Great question. You can simply import the file from the Tascam via USB or the micro SD card into an SD card reader. Then drag it into iMovie or any video editing software to align it with your video. All video editors have basic audio processing tools. I personally use Final Cut. When I’m doing heavy processing I’ll use a dedicated audio software first like Presonus Studio One or Izotope RX8, and THEN drag it into my video editor to sync. Many different paths.

Ok my conclusion lol!
Vxr10 pro is the best sounding for me compared against the original and the rode video micro. I couldn’t really tell the difference on the 3rd test which is probably a good job on the Vxr10 pro. Personally I would save, save and save and get the Rode NTG and buy the Vxr10 pro in the mean time knowing that it’s a temporary move. I want the extra 10-20% improvement thou. If you are not that into audio and good enough is ok then get the Vxr10 pro and save the cash for other improvements in your setup like lighting etc
I did reach out to Movo and they confirmed it was a deliberate choice to make the Pro sound like a completely different mic. I respect that, but would have named it something completely unique.

Just a side note - would the placement of the mics change the sound? So if the mics were placed on a desk facing upwards or at a horizontal position instead of facing downwards? 🤷🏻♂️
Yes. For one, the desk would create reflections that would get into the mic, making it sound like a slight echo. Those same reflections are probably bright sounding, which will increase the brightness of the recording. AND brighter frequencies come downwards out of your mouth, which would double down on the bright reflections. If you put a mic on your desk angled up, I almost guarantee without listening to a sample that you have a harsh, tinny sound.

Umm thank you so much. I record car racing and really want to capture the exhaust sound. Will the original vxr10 pick up that low rumble and loud cracks and pops of race cars?? I'm struggling here. I don't think I could edit audio at all right now. At least not properly.
Yes the VXR10 will capture some of the low rumble. For the full capture, you might consider a mic that picks up all the way down to 20hz, like the VideoMic NTG.
Best pick is the rode video micro, how do I know? I got it for 3 year and when you actually use it outside on non treatment room it performs very good, the movo vxr10 and the pro version just fall apart, thise 2 movos might sound good inside in a treated room, drop it once or get it out on a humid day and it is gone, those 2 movos lasted less that a year and the last 2 months a camera mic sounded better.
I purchased the Movo VXR10-Pro and really like it ... but: I plugged it right into my Canon R5 and am getting a constant background noise; in FCPX I de-noise but it doesn't sound that good. Any advice? I didn't hear any background noise when you were reviewing it. Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe I'm just not doing a good job in the post-production side. Anyhow, people are raving about this mic, like you, but the background noise is very apparent. Anyhow, would love to hear your feedback on this. Thanks!!
There is no post production or any processing on this video, so the issue is somewhere in your chain.
First, are you using the correct cable? You need the TRS cable plugged in the correct direction.
Second, is the R5 set to mic power on?
Third, is the audio on the R5 set to manual instead of auto?
And finally, do you have the Wifi and Bluetooth off on the R5?
Wow the vrx10 is a must if your all about saving your cash!

How do you split the audio lines with the dr05x? Like did you use a cable for that or some gadged?
3.5mm Y cable, split stereo female to stereo male. That puts one mic on the left and one on the right channel, which you can split apart in post.
How do you feel about the new movo double mic. Do you loose quality in regards to the Movo PRO

I'm also conflicted between the VXR10 and the VXR10 pro. The mud cut on the pro is convenient, but it might need some taming on the high end. On the other hand, a mud cut on the VXR10 would balance it out. It's also harder to add low end then subtract it. It's a tossup for me. What did you end up keeping or recommending?
Most of the time if I'm going to grab one of these for an overhead boom mic, I still grab the original VXR10 and do a low mids cut. As you say, you can't add low end that wasn't captured, and I find the Pro a bit thin in that way.
But I enjoy the crispness of the Pro and would probably grab that for a low budget live streaming setup when clarity is more important than fullness, without the ability to do processing.

The Podmic would be an interesting comparison. Similar to an SM58.

I haven’t tried the VXR10GY, so I can’t speak to it! I’ve gone back and forth on the original VXR10 and the new Pro. Mostly I recommend the Pro these days. It lacks a bit of low end but is nice and crisp right out of the box.

Wow, I used this same backing music. Small world.
In all four tests I chose B. VXR 10 is terrible, VXR 10 Pro has been improved a lot, but still does have that irritating resonance which sounds as if someone was talking next to a tower built from empty wineglasses. But at least the muddiness of the original VXR10/Boya BY-MM1 is gone. The Videomicro is like the Videomicro, much cleaner than the Movo but a bit too harsh in the high end, I suspect you were not using the deadcat that this high-boost was designed to compensate. Yes, 100 Hz lowcut is a bit too much for an indoor boom setup like yours, but it was designed for vlogging in the street where it is a wise choice. The NTG of course sounded the best. I have one and I love the way it sounds unless it goes to distortion. Pity it seems to have some incompatibility issues with my Canon M50 camera.
Do not understand the use of the portable audio recorder? Could you explain why we can’t just record from the mic itself ? I’m really confused 😐..
What do you mean "from the mic itself" ?
@@AudioforContentCreators well I assume when you’re using any mic the audio is being recorded while you’re recording the video so it’s all synced so I’m not understanding the purpose of a portable audio recorder..

Thank you so much for this video comparison! Based on this I bought the AverMedia 133, you and I have similar voice tones and I thought it sounded the best Raw because I’m not super knowledgeable of doing all the audio work in the background.
I did a test between my webcam and the avermedia, my wife says the webcam is clearer (Logi C520 [i think]), but it has an echo whereas the avermedia captures my voice more accurately..but she says there is a background hissing noise. To even register my voice I had to turn the system property for the mic up to +30db... so how do I get rid of the hissing from using the avermedia?
When you say "the system," what are you plugging it into?
Sure, Windows 10 Setting > System > Sound. Then I choose the Mic as the input and on the right side I click Sound Control Panel > Recording, I right click on the device and click Properties and in the top tabs I click Levels and and I adjust the Microphone to 100 and the Microphone boost was at +10dB but it was too quiet even right next to my mouth, so I kicked it to +30 and it was grossly staticy
@@nealybeans And you plugged it into the computer's mic/headphone jack using the included TRRS adapter?
@@AudioforContentCreators my computer has a separate mic and headphone Jack so I used the included TRS plug instead.
@@nealybeans That may be your problem. This mic, via TRS, requires mic power typically supplied by a camera or portable audio recorder. Does your computer supply mic power?
A B B A surprised it's the same mic hah although test with ntg was close and i wasn't sure what i like more. Done the test on my speakers on volume i usually use.
I hit VXR 10 Pro 3 times, choosing only AM133 over it 😮.
Amazing video. It was pretty easy to hear the VXR10 Pro in all tests and i do like the neutral sound of it.
Having said that. I would like to use it in a noncontrolled environment. So it would be interesting how its directionality compares to lets say the NTG. How much difference does the longer microphone make (and the higher price). How much more of the room will it pick up?
Also it would have been interesting I thought to see how close you could get the sound of the VXR10 Pro with EQ to the NTG. Would the NTG still sound better?

Well, I was watching on my iPhone, without headphones, which may have messed up perception… but I thought they all sounded great, abs could not really pick an A or B. In #1, I did choose A, but after that, no choices. And no, the Rode at 5x the price, did not sound any better.
Listen again with headphones. You'll be shocked at how they are worlds apart, and you'll never produce or edit your audio again without headphones on ;)
The VideoMic NTG wiped the face of the earth off all the other mics. The VideoMic NTG is in another class. I listened with headphones
gh5 preamps are not crappy. g85s are also pretty good compared to the competition
If you're happy with your audio quality, that's awesome. Make great content and don't think twice.
Objectively, consumer grade camera preamps, including the GH5, are not good. Audio professionals will avoid them unless absolutely necessary. Professional sound is *always* recorded to a dedicated audio recorder with high quality clean preamps.
I own two G85s. Their internal preamps are terrible. Making matters worse, consumer grade cameras capture audio in a compressed AAC format, so the dynamic range and full frequency response is unrecoverable in post, instead of linear PCM.
Im listening to this on an ancient PC with a broken speaker and I could tell the difference. I think I liked the Movo best out of this junk speaker. I just started searching for better audio and this video was very helpful to me.

I would hardly say the NTG is better sounding than the VXR10 pro. Yes, it has better low frequency response, but, at least on your voice specifically, it accentuates just too much of a quite present 1k "thing" that you have going on naturally. Also, the high frequencies don't seem as detailed. Hmm..
Good ears on my vocal problem frequencies. It's around 550 and 1k that, no matter what mic or situation, always seem to build up in my voice. Appreciate the critical listening. I definitely disagree in this case and much prefer to smoother, albeit less detailed NTG. But that's subjective! We have different ears. Audio is lovely in that way.
@@AudioforContentCreators Interesting, and yes it is absolutely subjective. Definitely just my thoughts on the matter. That's why it can be so hard to choose a 'best' mic.
It's interesting because to me, that 500hz area is definitely quite present in your voice but it's not as obnoxious as the 1k area.
IN any case, whatever you do, NEVER use a blue snowball for your voice! That thing seems to accentuate 1-1.2k like crazy, and would make your voice unbearable. lol
And thanks on the comment about critical listening, good to know that I'm not on my third year of an Audio Engineering degree for nothing!
@@AudioforContentCreators Also, it's funny, the first video I stumbled upon of yours was the review of the MOVO/BOYA large diaphragm mic, and when I was listening my first inclination was "Oh no, another Blue Snowball. but then I went and listened to your other videos as well as other demos of the MOVO/BOYA mics. The MOVO/BOYA is definitely a high quality mic.

@@AudioforContentCreators Almost! My school has done a "HyFlex" system for most classes where the student can choose to be online or in person. I've chosen to go fully online except for one "Studio Electronics and Maintenance" course that was only offered in person because, well, how can you even teach that remotely? The whole purpose of the class is to get hands on experience with soldering etc. lol
The Rode is cheaper than both the Movo mics here in Australia

Even the worst microphone performs better than the built in one in my camera’s. Think I deserve a rode ntg. We should take sound quality as serious a a lens or a camerabody.
I dont feel the NTG was that much better, in fact, I barely feel is better just different tonality from the Pro.
