I do not speak Russian, only English and a bit of French - but I listen to her at work regularly because of how grounding and soothing her voice is. I absolutely love her, and honestly would listen to her even if she was only doing runs or vocalizations and no words LOL. But I would also love to know what she's singing about, for sure.

She has a wonderful voice. She participated in the contest called You are Super (Ты СУПЕР). This a special contest for talented kids living without parents ( in orphans houses or adopted by other families). The song is called River. This is a Russian folk song telling story about a girl which remained without parents. This is a part story of Diana herself- she was abandoned by her native mother, stayed at orphans house and further adopted by a very nice and kind woman who did her best to develop Diana’s talent. Diana has won that contest and now she lives in Moscow and continues her musical education there

That performance had me totally mesmerized, and is the second time I've seen it. I love her particular brand of melisma that she shows here. The raspiness at some parts, the breath control that she shows. She's incredible. Not to mention the way she's able to so easily get into character, like you said.

Well when you factor in the fact she been singing since 5 ...9 years of training ... you better be good then ... people forget to think about when did they start way to often :)
Same with Dimash .. all are so amazed by him, but then factor in he hade 20 years of training ...well ofcause hes good then.
Plus both started as children .. you learn alot easier when you are a child aswell. Especially if it is something they really want to do emself, and engages into it fully.

Not just a fabulous singer but an astonishing performer..Par Excellence !!! Complete package. A strength of character unheard of in a person her age or twice her age. 99.9% of singers that got shafted the way she did on the voice would have broken down on stage, not performed another song for the creeps that dissed her and kept her smile and composure. Good? That's like calling Mt Everest a fairly big hill.
This is folklor and the song has deep meaning. Previously, the river was considered an otherworldly place connecting the living and the dead. And an orphan girl comes to the river to ask for blessings and protection from the river (that is, to the deceased mother), since she is being married to an unloved one. And she suffers from the grief that there is no one to protect or bless her.
There are many allegories in this song (it's my interpretation):

It flow but not quiver = My life is going, but nothing good happens...
The river has that meaning all over the world!

Hello Marc this is my favorite song from Diana she is just such a performer and in this she stays in her bubble all through this performance and she nails it on point after point, she is just total gold. You are just so good at analyzing this performance as a matter in fact I believe you are the best at reaction videos....talking about stuff we "ordinary" people never hear from the world of singing makes it very interesting. I have to say this Dr Marc. The most professional reaction and critic of a singer I have ever seen and listened to. You did not try to take her down for her artistry, Yes I love Diana and her music....But you explained what she is doing and it made sense to someone who could not sing 5 notes if had to. I think they were asking the same question you asked at the end: how can such a young artist produce such a committed performance. But thank you again. Olga Hein Yes, on this show all the children were either orphans or abandoned by their parents. And they all lived either in orphanages or with foster parents. Everyone has a difficult fate. And Diana also has a difficult fate, she is still being treated for psychological shock after living with a biological mother who hated her and wanted to kill her.

How many teenagers could commit like that to a performance, with no sign of caution or hesitance? Then how many of those rare teenagers have that kind of vocal control? And out of that even more rarified group, how many have a unique vocal timbre, that consistently sends shivers down the spines of their audience? I don't know the answer to that, but Diana Ankudinova is one of those exceedingly rare peformers. This performance is just outstanding.

I've got to say the stage production values on this show are amazing.
That was a really good review, not just a reaction (and your channel will be flooded with russians now, this girl is adored by the russian people atm). About the judges of the show, they already knew her. She won the previous season of this contest at the age of 14 (I very much recomend her performance 'This is a man's world' from then), before her growth spurt, she was so adorable. It's a special season, where the best ones from the previous rounds were competing. At this performance she was 15. The judges were probably more reacting to the fact how her voice, her control, her performance and her presence improved every time she stepped on stage, wich one can also see very well watching another song from that season, 'wicked game' and the song wich made her win this season too 'Human'. They called her 'shaman girl' btw.
Also, now she is 16 and concentrating on finishing school, so that she can attend music college in Moscow. She still has a CZcams channel and is present there, but atm studying is taking up most of her time.
That aside, I would really like to know what you have to say to a performance of hers when she was 13. Her first time on a russian national tv competition, The Voice - kids. She performed a swiss song called 'Jodel-time', she did sing in 3 languages, and the german part with a proper dialect, and she doesn't know those languages at all. The most important part was the 'Yodel', wich is actually hard to do, unless you grow up in the Alps. She wasn't chosen (it needs at least one judge to turn their seat around), as the song and sound were too foreign and she did sound too professional. But the performance was considered awesome by everyone who saw it afterwards.
(For those who don't know and are interested: The Voice is an annual tv singing competition that exists in pretty much all over Europe, for the winner to be the participant in the Eurovision song contest. The version for kids does exist in some countries and is more for entertainment, thus they prefer to choose younger kids in the blind auditions.).

I know, I know, 14 is too early classify a female voice and it might be another 15 or 20 years before it is fully developed, but I feel that if she is not already a polyphonic contralto, she will be soon. This is a Russian folk song which explains the tempo and tone. She is performing as "The Orphan Bride" who is lamenting that she has no parents to bless her wedding. Rechenka, "The River" is the border between the living and the dead.
I don't think at all that any of the judges were creeped out. Instead, they were shocked at the talent in her performance, both singing and presentation.

Полностью согласна с Вами, что видео от Марка чрезвычайно интересны. Вот только Гнесинка тут совершенно ни при чем. Диану не приняли туда по причине закулисных интриг, а не из-за каких-то мнимых недостатков в ее выступлениях.

Димаш и Диана два разного мира и нельзя смешивать их. Димаш это космос внеземная понятия о динамике голоса или звука человеческого. А у Дианы естественный тембр восточных гортанных пение она смешивает его, такая голос у неё из природы восточных народов который она являются представительницей (хотя возможно одно из родителей из этих народов, гены сыграла). Димаша от тренировки из детских возрастов и талант.

Это песня-Зов. Обращение-зов срывающийся, улетающий вдаль (куда она течет) "У-у-у" к Реке которая колыбается=колышится,(тут использовано старорусское слово), зов к Предкам-родителям. Очень много звуков, "голосья" из народных славянских песен. Древнее славянское языческое обрядовое обращение к Духам, как это было принято в дохристианское и раннехристианское время, зовет в глубь веков, в Ведический мир. Как их исполняли деревенские женщины в поле, на посиделках. Прям ностальгирую. У Дианы все многоголосье, образность собраны в одной песне.
Наверно западные люди слишком далеко от всего этого ушли, но древняя память прошлых воплощений таки пробуждается и манит. До мурашек по коже, до щемления в груди. Слушать - не наслушаться! Когда наши студентки поют обрядовые песни, то же "Гуканне Вясны" (Заклик Весны), Каляды, многие иностранцы стоят открыв рот и жадно вслушиваются. Но у них не столь прекрасно поставлены голоса.
