  • In this video, I will be briefly unboxing all the luxury items I purchased when I was in Paris and breaking down the price in USD, Euros, and exactly how much I got back from the VAT refund (prices include recent Chanel and LV price increases). After, I will be breaking down EVERYTHING you need to know about the VAT refund such as the % you get back, different partners, how to do the VAT refund at the airport, duty free shopping, credit cards/getting the best exchange rate, etc. I’ll also be covering WeVat, a newer VAT refund platform.

Let me know what video you want to see next and any questions you have! Great video! Just got back from Paris yesterday and totally agree about the shopping and VAT refund. The one thing I didn’t see here and have never really seen anyone else discuss is what happens once you get back in the US. During our customs processing me and my friend both ended up having to pay an extra $225 in taxes right then and there for our Paris purchases. We were prepared for it as we’d never heard anyone discuss it before.

    • @HelloLuxe
      @HelloLuxe  Před rokem +2

      Hope you had a good trip! When I initially made this video I didn’t think much about including customs on the way back since it’s so different country to country. However I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it so I’ll be making an updated video covering customs. Customs has been VERY hit or miss and there’s conflicting information. You’re supposed to pay duties for anything over $800 (which you can combine if you’re traveling in a group). I didn’t have to pay any taxes, I saw another video today where somebody was told that no duties are needed over $2650. I’ve seen other stores where somebody brings in thousands of dollars but doesn’t pay anything (let off with a simple “thanks for your honesty you’re free to go” LOL). wish it was more standardized and clear because it seems like it’s up to the officer. Just curious how much were you declaring?

    • @sgardnerstyle
      @sgardnerstyle Před rokem +4

      @@HelloLuxe ah! I see. Thank you so much for your reply. So my total spend in Paris was $4310 Euros/ around $4500 USD. I got the $800 instant tax credit and then they calculated the rest and the total I owed after was $225. He calculated it in front of me but didn’t provide any paperwork beyond that for me to keep. I do know part of the calculation was at 30%. We could only combine purchases if we lived in the same household, but since my friends and I don’t we were individually taxed.
      This additional fee made a big difference in how I view shopping in Europe and exactly how worth it it is. I do also know France is one of the countries that the US will tax goods at a higher rate for.

      @SharonTempleman Před 9 měsíci +1

      That’s exactly what I was going to say. I’m a flight attendant so I go through US customs and immigration all the time. The one thing she didn’t mention at all is going through customs. It’s not like you can get off the airplane in the US carrying all these luxury shopping bags and sail on through customs without paying anything!!!!! Sometimes the customs officers will let you go through, sometimes you are stopped and have to pay duty and sometimes your bags will be searched. It’s completely unpredictable.

      Hope this helped! And I didn’t even try WeVat for my larger purchases because I wanted to make sure I was getting my refund and didn’t wanna take a risk on an extra 1-2% savings. From what I heard not all stores will do it because they all have partners they’ve signed with so they might be hesitant to let you use WeVat. And yes depending on your situation you need to pay customs - I traveled in a group where I was only one with larger purchases and so each of us was able to claim a portion. Because of that I didn’t need to pay anything additional. If you’re traveling in groups I would recommend doing this because most people think that if you pay for it then you have to claim it, but you can actually split it with family

      You have to declare your items. You may or may not need to pay customers depending on your total spend amount and your customers officer (essentially up to the discretion of each officer). If you’re traveling with family I would split up your purchase amongst your family members so that you don’t have to declare everything. So for example if you buy a $1600 bag you can split it between two people and then there shouldn’t be customers to pay.

      I traveled with family and you’re able to split purchases across a group! Would highly recommend - just because you purchase doesn’t mean you need to declare. I’ve seen some CZcams videos where somebody declared everything and their customs officer didn’t make them pay anything 🤷‍♀️ I think it depends but split if you can, but if not just declare all the items and see if they will make you pay

    Sorry 1 more question! The airport I'm leaving from seems to have different instructions for each Terminal. Terminal 1 says:
    1) After security, go to the Customs desk, Level 3, A Plus (Z Gates) behind security control, before Duty Free.
    2) Present your Tax Free Forms, receipts and unused purchases for a Customs stamp.
    3) Go to the nearby Global Blue desk to receive a refund in cash or to your credit card.
    But Terminal 2 says:
    1) Go to the Customs desk in Departures Hall D/E, Level 3, behind the passport control on the right.
    2) Present your Tax Free Forms, receipts and unused purchases for a Customs stamp.
    3) Once your Tax Free Forms have been stamped, go to the Global Blue desk and drop your forms in the Global Blue Mailbox to receive payment of your refund to a credit card or Alipay. Please remember to fill in all necessary details.
    My flight is from Terminal 2. :( Does this mean I can't get an immediate refund to my credit card? Am I to go travel between terminals to use Terminal 1? Thanks!

      Thanks for watching! Only LV had lines, and surprisingly Chanel did not have a line at all. Other stores like Dior, Celine, Bottega Veneta, etc had no lines. However I have since heard that the Chanel line is pretty long due to summer being a busy travel season and travel restrictions easing. I posted individual videos on LV and Chanel in Paris and I would highly recommend those - I go over the appointment system at each store and what they offer.

    Hello again! I have another question. I made a purchase in store and chose credit card as my "method of reimbursement" on the form from the store. I was worried that the Refund Office would be closed since my flight is in the morning, however I'm thinking it will be open. Since I'm leaving from Germany (purchase was in France) I know I need the stamp from the customs office, but if the Refund Office is open, can I still get the credit card refund immediately?

    • @HelloLuxe
      @HelloLuxe  Před rokem

      Hi, you will need to get a customs validation at your last exit point out of the EU, which in your case seems to be Germany. You will not get a refund if you do not get a stamp, whether that be digitally or through a customs office. Some refunds have the option to be refunded immediately meaning at the airport, but there is a fee for that. Unless you’re in an urgent rush I recommend just choosing the default method as that can hit in as little as 24 hours (when I purchased in France) but shouldn’t take longer than a week (for my most recent purchase in Spain). Hopefully that makes sense - let me know if anything is unclear! I also made an updated VAT video with some more info that I recommend you check out czcams.com/video/5y-0xYC1JBY/video.html

      @HelloLuxe  Před rokem

      @@jr.sciencebros.8411 no problem. As yes I understood your point, which is why I was giving the Spain vs France credit card example. It is not always available and is dependent on the tax refund supplier. • @HelloLuxe
      @HelloLuxe  Před rokem +1

      I would double check since each debit card is different so as long as you can use it internationally your VAT refund should be able to be returned. One thing to note is that you might lose some money as debit cards traditionally have international transaction fees. That means you’ll lose money twice for fees (once when you buy the item and second when they return the refund) - because of this I personally would use a credit card with no fees but do your research to see how it works for your card. Enjoy your trip!

    Hello Luxe, If i want to claim cash for the refund, do i need to scan the form in pablo machine?

    • @HelloLuxe
      @HelloLuxe  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, after you receive the forms you keep them until you get to the Pablo machines and then when it asks how you want to get paid you select cash. After that there’s a separate area where you take that to exchange it for cash (usually after security whereas the Pablo machines are before security). I mentioned it in my video but I wouldn’t recommend cash, as it takes more time since you have to go to two separate places, wait in two different lines, get less of a refund, and then take another loss converting it back into your local currency.

      Hi, I’m sorry that I’m just seeing this. It was in my flagged comments. You don’t need to do anything for duty free purchases as taxes have already been deducted and it doesn’t matter where you purchase the duty free goods. All goods are supposed to be used only AFTER you leave the county, but many people use them after purchase. It’s your personal choice what to do but at the minimum I would keep general packaging and tags!
