    It's always a slow, slippery slope, nickel and diming people into submission. When I bought my house in 1994, 65% of my property tax went to the public school district, even though I did not and would never have children in the system. I was ok with paying because it was for the "greater good". Years later, when I was in financial distress during the recession, there was nothing to help me and I lost everything even though I'd been paying taxes for 25 years to benefit others. This is why people hate the government.

      Again you don’t know what you’re talking about. I know someone who gets Snap benefits who lives on $1,350 a month. This is before things like rent, utilities and so on. Things like that vary from state to state. My neighbor lives on $900 a month pension from her job in the Post Office. She moved into the house nearest mine and her water has been shut off for over a year. The previous tenants skipped out without paying their bill and the property owner lives in another state and won’t answer his phone or sign the paperwork saying the previous tenants were the ones who ran up the bill. So she sends her son and grandson to my house multiple times a day to fill buckets of water so they can flush the toilet.

    I would like to see the US pay health, dental & vision care like other countries do.
    I went to the dentist last week. I need a filling, I have minimum dental coverage through my health insurance. My fillings and office visits are Free. The dentist is recommending to get a bridge to attach to that tooth, fill in the space next to it and attach to the tooth on the other side of the space. Sounds good, right? Not, they quoted me $1700.00 for "that" bridge, not covered by the health insurance. $1700 for 3 pieces of porcelain, each smaller than a pencil eraser, hooked together! Said he can't fill the tooth without ordering the bridge; doesn't want to put in a temporary filling. My answer - then put in a permanent filling. I'm 73 years old, not spending that much on a 3 teeth, I can live with the space, just fix the cavity. The space is only there because the crown that's supposed to go there, fell out and they can't seem to figure out which glue is the super duper one to hold it in place. I took the crown with me in a mini Tupperware container as proof, I had one.
    Said he can't do it, not part of the procedure, really, really pushing the bridge. I have an appt. this week with another dentist for a 2nd opinion. Wish me luck!

    Corporations should pay a bit more than they are now even if it isn’t at the rate of the average citizen. I do agree that healthcare should be provided to US citizens like other countries. One catastrophic health incident can bankrupt a person no matter what they have saved. It’s scary and only serves to further destabilize the economy. Many people can’t afford insurance or have minimal coverage so they never have checkups and have no advice in terms of preventative care. Without a healthy workforce you don’t have a healthy economy. I think it’s that simple.

    Years ago I saw a video from a businessman sitting in his $400,000 car. And he was explaining that the reason the government allows businesses to not pay the same percentage in taxes is because of us worker bees. The businesses provide the workers to be taxed by the government and taxing all of us gets them a lot more money than just one business person and they want to make incentives for that business person to take risks and hire people and so on and so on. And I do remember that part about taxes being brought up in the debate and what also was said was you won’t repeal or change those laws because your friends also take advantage of those tax codes. You also made me think of a video of a young woman videoing herself trying to understand how taxes work and she says something to the effect of so if I earn a dollar but then it’s taxed and then I buy some thing and then that is taxed and then the dollar that bought some thing is taxed because the next person has that dollar it was just cute and sad at the same time her realizing our reality of taxation

  • @FrugalQueeninFrance

    I live where taxes are higher than the US but it’s a myth that people pay 50% in tax. Just like other countries businesses taxed on profit and corporation tax for big businesses of 25% on taxes higher than half a million a year. We ordinary folk pay no tax and families with children actually get tax credits. There’s universal healthcare, a reasonable social safety net and France is still a G7 country. Taxes don’t stop business. If taxes were higher in the US, it wouldn’t shut down Walmart or make them leave. Where would they go?

    • @PrepperPrincess
      @PrepperPrincess  Před měsícem +3

      Walmart wouldn’t shut down, they would increase their prices to make up the difference. Every CEO to a corporation has a legal fiduciary responsibility to their INVESTORS. Not to their employees, not to their customers. To their investors. They have to make a huge profit or lose their jobs and risk legal consequences. Most people aren’t aware of that. I personally get taxed 50% or more. I have had to pay just about every tax there is. That is why people complain about barely getting by making $100,000. But schools don’t teach about taxes for a reason. I pay quarterly taxes. Then when taxes come, even though I claim 0 dependents, somehow I still owe another $5k on top of that taxes I already paid. Then I have to pay my property taxes, car registration which is just another way to tax us, then I fill up my gas tank where I pay more taxes. Then I sit on my couch that I paid taxes to purchase and watch tv that I paid taxes for, using electricity that is taxed.

    • @davidgavney6711
      @davidgavney6711 Před měsícem

      Walmart might be a bad example, because a lot of low income people go there because they can't afford to go anywhere else (I see it all the time compared to going to somewhere like Target or better yet Macy's, etc.). If they raised their prices too much, then the customers would stop going there. Don't know where they would go, but Walmart would lose customers, shareholders be damned.
      You might get taxed 50% on the margin, but not half of your total income. For $100,000, the marginal Fed tax rate is currently 24%, but the effective rate is 17%. The highest tax rate at a glance for state is California at 12.3%, but that's for up to a million, so at $100K, it's about 5.9% effective (Illinois is 4.95% flat where I live). So, with Federal and State, you're at 22.9% effective. Now, the property taxes could vary wildly, but I'll take the taxes for a typical house in my neighborhood north of Chicago at about $12,000 per year (people complain about their property taxes ALL the time here). That's 12% on $100K effective. Add that to 22.9 and it's 34.9%. Now, you could add sales taxes and gas taxes and anything else you have in your state, and I bet it would still not hit 40%. This would vary on how much you spend and how much you drive, of course. You could nickel and dime everything and split hairs on every bill, but when comparing to another country, say, it's basically comparing the basic income and property taxes.

    The employees at medical facilities in countries who get free healthcare are severely underpaid. In the UK doctors make between 32,000 to 126,000 pounds per year. It can take many years to get to the high end of that pay scale. In the US nurses are making upwards of $150,000 a year with very few years of experience. The reason why healthcare workers in the United States are able to make a livable wage is because we pay for our healthcare. It is my belief that people who dedicate themselves to a life of study and sacrifice should be well compensated for it. There are so much more I can continue on with this particular subject. Actually, a lot of this is not true. They kind of have paid their fair share in the past. When marginal tax rates on "the rich" were very high (71% to 92%), GDP growth rates were higher (4%) than when tax rates were lower (28% to 39%) growth rates were only about 2%. Also, many companies didn't invest their tax savings into the business when the tax cuts were implemented in 2018, but they bought back their stock in order to increase their share prices. They also cut many jobs instead of investing in more jobs.
    A lot of the wealth in America isn't earned income, but capital and capital gains, which is at a relatively lower tax rate. They really don't have to "work" or "innovate" to get this income, not like profits from a business. So, the only incentive is to get more money.

    I am an American living in Australia for some time now.
    The tax system here is fair indeed and also ensures public health etc. individuals have a sliding scale for taxes depending on annual income - from 0-45% and all businesses pay - large businesses pay flat 30% and small/medium businesses pay 20%.
    Tax funds also are used to offset prescription costs and the govt owns utilities and public health and transport so that is beneficial!
    It was such a learning curve to see taxes used properly.
    I will also add you were correct about holiday time - 4-6 weeks per year, after ten years in public service there are three months long service leave and above all, pay rates are fantastic! Strong industrial relations legislation and active unions work together - i get 3% yr plus tax free fringe benefits.
    Public service jobs here are police, fire, rescue, nursing, teaching, politics, etc (which also are overseen by tight ethics legislation).
    Home can indeed use Australia as a blueprint re taxes and how to use them. Oh, btw, even though i live overseas (22yrs) i still have to file US taxes and pay in some instances!! I just paid $2300 to have my US taxes done! Greed at its best!

    It started with by President Woodrow Wilson. The Revenue Act of 1913, also known as the Underwood Tariff or the Underwood-Simmons Act re-established a federal income tax in the United States. The act was passed by the 63rd United States Congress, and signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. Then went right into the robber baron Federal Reserve System, the central banking system of the United States.

People wait months and months to get seen, they have equipment shortages, I've heard of stories that people have died while waiting for what they needed. Look at Canada's free healthcare. Also, I know people who have absolutely loved their jobs and also made life long friends there. True, that doesn't happen very often but it happens.

    HR25 is a national retail sales tax that eliminates the income tax (16th Amendment/Dec. 23, 1913). No individual filing except if you want the progressive 'prebate' for those at or below the federal poverty level. All federal programs are 'funded' through this NRST. the full 15.3% SS & Medicare is part of the 23% NRST, so, the actual tax rate is 7.7%. Business pays 7.65%. workers pay 7.65% = 15.3%. Ideally, business/employers could give the worker a 7.65% raise as they were already using that for their share. No business taxes so the retail costs ideally would go down 20-40% depending on the product and/or services provided. Dentists, doctors, plumbers, electricians, yards keepers, hair/manicurists...etc provide services. none pay federal taxes and therefore their operating expenses drop and ideally their retail prices would as well. No taxes for government purchases for their various projects and functions. No business-to-business taxes. Meant to keep retail prices down.
    Business and landlords are very similar as they just COLLECT taxes and are a pass through that receive tax benefits for being part of the economy. Even renters are property taxpayers but without any benefits/write-offs. 1/12 of a rental house tax are being paid by the renter in their monthly payment. Leasing a house is the same. Taxes included in the lease payment.
    Apartment dwellers pay property taxes but maybe not as high of a percentage as a single dwelling house rental.

    The IRS was established in 1861 to collect taxes for the Civil War. Taxes stopped being collected in 1872. Next, in 1917, taxes were started again due to WW1. WW2 taxes were in effect until 1964, at top rates of 90%, to pay for the war effort. They dropped significantly after that. (England was voluntarily still on war rations through the 1960's.) Compare our rates to nations with excellent services. Ours are lower.

    So true, I watched people get so emotional when they left, yet they hated their job! Too Many identify in life with the job and not the things that are more important in life other than a job. The job becomes their identify and when it is over they feel lost because they invested so much in a thankless job. If you are a small business owner at least you have a say in everything, you make the rules except the things that the government controls! Taxes never end!

It’s an easy trap to fall into, I felt lost and I haven’t made that mistake since. When I left that particular job, I didn’t miss the people, I missed the job. I never ask people what they do for a living; if they want to tell me then fine.

    There were only three jobs I loved when I was still able to work. The first one was when I was working as a CNA. The residents became like family, and I did make a good friend that I am still in touch with. We have met up after I left and when she's in town we always set something up. We talk still and it makes me happy. The second job was when I was working as a housekeeper. I didn't stay in touch with those people, but the people I worked with were all awesome. I did get emotional when I left. The last job I was working at a grocery store. I really enjoyed what I did. I was in charge of the popcorn stand. Making different types of popcorn, keeping the shelves stocked and keeping my area spotless. It was a lot of physical work, but I had the energy to do it. The people I worked with were all so kind and were so excited for me when I was getting married. I was sad when I left that job too. I'd like to work again if I could, but I honestly don't think I would have such great experiences anymore with how the world is now.

    Yes, corporations pass their tax burdens on to their customers. But, as a customer, I then get to choose how much tax I pay by which companies I choose to buy from. If I live like you do, my taxes would be very low. If I live like the Kardashians, my taxes would be stupid high.
    The real reason the tax code for corporations is low is because they write the code.

    There are many reason corporations will never pay their "fair" share. One, depreciation expense, the IRS incentives capital investment by allowing businesses to write down capital investments ("improvements" on real estate,) however that write down is essentially a tax deferral as the cost basis decrease one-for-one. Second like-kind exchanges, in the same fashion as depreciation, the IRS incentivizes capital investment by allowing business sell assets with deferred capital gains as long as you purchase "like-kind" assets, bigger trackers, bigger factories, bigger warehouse, more units, etc. Third, the nature of business is fundamentally different than labor. A company derives its income and profit from assets, not labor. The income and profit come from you the consumer, either directly (i.e. a hamburger) or indirectly, farm equipment used to grow wheat that some baker buys to make buns, that McD buys to make a burger. So, corporations don't pay taxes, you actually pay the taxes for the corporation through your consumption. A corporation doesn't have an 8-hour shift and in exchange gets some dollar amount, it get a return on its assets and paid out labor. IF you tax all corporations, they will still get the profit, they will just charge you more as they know all other corporations will do the same, so in the end, corporation pays zero taxes. You pay all the tax anyway. Actually, some corporations that can game the political system (rent seeking) can end up paying less taxes that their competitors, resulting in a higher corporate tax rate leading to higher profits (since the new taxes gave cover to higher prices) for said unethical firms.
