  • In this video I am visiting UK Distributor Karma AV to experience different cutting edge Home Theatre systems at different price points in different sized rooms for different people.
    I am here to learn as much as I can about different home theatre approaches in terms of speaker and subwoofer design and part of this was meeting and interviewing three new brands to this channel Perlisten, Ascendo Immersive Audio and Primare.
    There are more details about some of the home theatre kit in this video listed below but if your interested to find out more its best to contact Karma AV or your local dealer of these brands

    I went here and had the best home cinema demo ive ever experienced, Mark who looked after me was extremely helpful and informative, they have a range of equipment to suit varied tastes and budgets, though the experience of the high end room you see here blew me away it was well out of my price range after some really helpful info and advice and experiencing a demo from a mid range system setup in another room i did realise my system needed an upgrade, one that i could afford. A speaker upgrade later my system is very happy, as am i
    Thoroughly recommend this place for any home cinema addict interested in upgrading your system

    Very good video Terry. Having such a quantity of speakers makes me, as an audiophile with 2.1 speakers, wonder if a
    multi-channel expansion is possible in the future. Especially to enjoy some SACD-recordings!
    Would be nice to do a video how you can upgrade an existing stereo system with a seperate AV-processor (Anthem, Emotiva, Primare, etc.?), adding some (wireless) surround/sub speakers to keep your stereo experience and use it for multi-channel music and movies too.
    Btw, noticed a Sony DVD-player. Seems a bit underrated regarding the rest of the systems (expected a Panasonic UB-9000, Reavon UBR-X200 or Magnetar UDP-800/900). Which sources are being used?

Or a Ascendo system with 12” speakers for the sides and a 10” or 2 x 6” drivers for the centre, using 2 x SVS SB 16 for the base. What’s your thoughts thanks

    One 32" driver is ~ 4 x 18" in terms of surface area. Assuming twice the throw of a 32" it would equal about 8 x 18" and not 20 as mentioned.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  Před rokem

      Their 32inch has a 90mm linear excursion maybe that is why that number reference was made, the website says the 32 is the equivalent of 15 normal 18s. Remember this is referring to the infrasonic region 20hz and below

    • @mrlinde6518
      @mrlinde6518 Před rokem +1

      @@PursuitPerfectSystem It's impressive for sure, but that number is inflated when it really doesn't has to be. There is something to be said about having more coils to dissipate heat as well rather than 1 giant sub. Their website says 16 liter displacement. Any decent 18" should do 2 liters. So thats 8 x 18. Still a lot, but far from 20.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  Před rokem

      I suppose then in the practical terms of the big system in the video having 2 x 32 inch subs and 4 dual 18 inch subs is the equivalent using your summation of 24 18's that would be hard to make work and I think that is why they exist.

    • @mrlinde6518
      @mrlinde6518 Před rokem +2

      @@PursuitPerfectSystem That depends on the 18" used. There are plenty high displacement 18" to choose from, so I will argue a lot less can do the job. There's also SPL to consider that isnt infrasonic. It's not that I don't see a place for a 32". My main issue is the overstatement of the displacement of the one 32". I just don't think it is accurate to say its comparable to twenty 18" subs. I've had the pleasure of demo'ing the 80" version from Ascendo so I know what they can do. If you have a look at their own Ascendo 18" sub it does 2.66 liter displacement, so that would "only" take 6-7 of those for the same displacement. The 32" is stated with a 16.6 liter displacement.

      @brucecarter6205 Před 5 měsíci

      I don’t understand why these companies feel the need to exaggerate specs. I mean, it’s already impressive enough to say they have a 32” driver. I suppose they are trying to justify the silly pricing when they say that. And, what would be considered a ‘normal’ 18” driver?? Lol
      There are some amazing 18” drivers out there.

    My highly provisional assessment of the Perlisten system from the NW Audio Show, agrees with you about the soft presentation.
    I disagree with you about liking the midrange. I hated it. Far too soft.
    Movies deserve to be played back with crisp clarity on transients. All those gunshots etc. They shouldn't be soft and unfocused!
    The quality of the main front and centre speakers should not be underestimated. The centres ought to be excellent at speech reproduction. And the mains should be the sort of speakers that would be great in a stereo music system.
    Get those 3 speakers right and you don't have to spend a lot on the Atmos receiver, nor the 4k blu-ray player.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  Před rokem

      Sadly the room that I had running at the NWAS was MASSIVELY compromised on acoustics and positioning - was simply too small. The room at KARMA AV is S series (a lot more forward with it being TPCD/Beryllium) whereas we were showing the R series which is soft dome. In a proper, purpose built environment - I think you would have a much better experience :)

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  Před rokem

      Lee Lindsay has very acquired taste for the sound and design of much older speakers and would never like a modern design of speaker, dont take offence as he is a good guy. That is why I said he would prefer the Ascendo as its larger drivers with compression driver tweeters more in line with older design just much better :)

    • @lint8391
      @lint8391 Před rokem

      @@PursuitPerfectSystem It is not true that I have an acquired taste for the sound and design of older speakers. The joint best speakers that I've heard use modern (high efficiency) drivers.
      What I crave is the very best sound for the least cost. Which in my hi-fi journey has resulted in me buying some bargain speakers from ebay - that happened to date from the 1960's to 1970's with - I guess - major reasons for them being so cheap for the sound quality on offer was the size and the looks and the (cosmetic or repairable) condition as well as the bias that many people have against older speakers as well as ebay being an "imperfect market" and sometimes stuff selling for cheaper than it normally would.
      If I found a modern speaker that I could buy for (even) less money that sounded better than my classic speakers, I'd sell on the older speakers in a heartbeat.
      There is a lot of vintage equipment that has a vintagey type, flub-a-dub, pipe-and-slippers sound. EG Spendor BC1's. I don't like that type of sound. I prefer audio equipment that sounds crisp, clear, detailed, dynamic, transparent.
      I am familiar with the challenges in getting good sound in hotel rooms at hi-fi shows. With me having exhibited 3 times at Scalford. My highly provisional assessment was that Perlisten speakers are poor to mediocre and would sound poor to mediocre, regardless of the room they are in. This is supported by Terry's "soft" comment.
      I expect I would prefer the sound of the Ascendo system. I wouldn't like the price.
      I agree with you Terry in getting the highest AV sound quality from Blu-rays. That's why I have a subscription to Cinema Paradiso.
      From Yorkshire AV's point of view I can understand why they don't stock the sort of system that offers the best sound quality for the lowest money. Because that would involve the use of either DIY'd or used bargain purchase speakers.

      Ostrich buried head in the sand approaches to AV systems does nobody any favours.
      In the real world with Atmos AV receivers having set-up microphones and processing power, it's easy to put together a system with highly disparate speakers. In the real world there's also used speaker bargains. And the ability to create good to great DIY'd ispeakers for reasonable cost.

      You've looked at this in completely the wrong way. Firstly its 'up to' 6m viewing distance and 'from' 3.6m that Dominus certification is given. This doesn't mean they can't be used in smaller rooms by someone who wants to push them to limits, past others, and still be confident of minimum distortion levels - a huge part of THX certification is about distortion in the signal at given levels, in this case 120dB
      Rooms above 3.6m are massively common in private home theatres and there are way more than you think that reach 6m. Theres definitely a space and requirement for Dominius rated speakers which is why more and more manufacturers are investing a lot of time and money into developing products that can achieve the rating, and of course why THX Dominus exists.

    • @YorkshireAV
      @YorkshireAV Před rokem

      @@wazzacee6960 - indeed, many manufacturers now pushing Dominus rated speakers i.e. KEF with their new products. Not all of Perlisten products are Dominus rated in isolation too. i.e. the R5i-LR are Dominus rated for surround but not for LCR application. The R series subs need to be doubled up or in some cases quadrupled up for the certification. Overhead + Distortion levels are what it's about.
