  • The choir of Westminster Cathedral sing Morten Lauridsen's stunningly beautiful setting of O Magnum Mysterium during Midnight Mass 2009.
    O magnum mysterium
    et admirabile sacramentum,
    ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
    jacentem in præsepio.
    Beata virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt
    portare Dominum Christum, Alleluia!
    Translation:
    O great mystery
    and wondrous sacrament,
    that animals should see the newborn Lord
    lying in their manger.
    Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy
    to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

    This is an absolutely angelic beautiful song. My son was in college and in choir. My Mom was on hospice and actively dying. She was very restless. I had a CD of my son’s college choir and decided to put it on by her bed. This song soothed her immediately. This was in 2011 and I still listen to it. Absolutely beautiful

    I have very strong memories of suffering through the death of my grandfather the day before Christmas Eve and then coming to the cathedral the next day and singing this anthem with the choir that had adopted me as an "orphan" chorister spending Christmas in a foreign country. It's very hard to grieve when you're singing this- it transports you to another place. Thank you, Mr Lauridsen.

Both sung to perfection. Thank you Morten Lauridsen for this gorgeous music touches my soul very deeply; and it is in the top two of my favourite pieces of music ever. The other being Allegri's 'Miserere Mei, Deus'. x

    The liturgy and music inspired by Christianity are among the great spiritual an artistic achievements of humanity. You need not be a Christian to be deeply moved by thsi piece, I am a choral singer and Lauridsen's works are much beloved of singers for their wonderful harmonies.

    • @MarianParrott
      @MarianParrott Před 10 lety +1

      Whoa, this very composer has written beautiful settings of secular poems, such as Agee's "Sure on this Shining Night" and Neruda's "Soneto de la Noche". There is plenty of great secular music, including operas, symphonies and so on. Johannes Brahms's German Requiem was criticized for leaving out the message of the resurrection, but he steadfastly refused to include it. Many excellent musicians, scientists, novelists and artists are atheists,and while there are certainly a few cranky ones out there, I think you'll find most are nice and reasonable people.

    • @numaranamikaze491
      @numaranamikaze491 Před 10 lety +1

      I have to agree with you, Marian. My school performed this recently, and even the most non-religious person I know was moved to tears. Now we're to perform "Sure on this Shining Night" and it is just as beautiful as "O Magnum Mysterium".
      No religious affiliation is needed to enjoy or create music. Even something as beautiful as this can be written by an atheist. Music is accepting to all. And it's really sad that some people do not realize that.

    Confusion seems to persist amongst us Yankees. Westminster Abbey is Anglican. Well, for the last 450 years or so anyway. Westminster CATHEDRAL, where this mass was taped, is Catholic. Both are in Westminster, within a short walk of each other. The Abbey is next to Westminster Palace, where Parliament is held, the Cathedral is a few blocks up Victoria Street close to Victoria Station.

      Alistair Kirk as beautiful an a capella piece this is, having that organ pedal tone at that specific part of the climax only makes this piece more powerful. It is still one of my dreams to hear this sang at a midnight mass at some famous cathedral, perhaps the one in Baltimore since it would be closest.

    J.S. Bach one of the greatest classical music composers that ever lived believed that music is an act of worship. I believe this to be so as well. To praise God by fulling his court with the joy of music is such a wonderful experience.

    People can only approach each other so far. There is always an inner gate in each person that the other can't pass through. Even in the closest relationship of love, this gate is approached only intermittently, and never passed. The love that the choir is singing of here, is the love that can open that gate in each of us.

    This is much better than your protestant guitars and drums. The difference being Guitars and drums are entertaining, and distract us from God. This choir singing traditional Latin Catholic hymns, does not distract us from God, but magnifies God and the Beauty of the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

    • @dawnosbourne9285
      @dawnosbourne9285 Před 9 lety +8

      It’s really ridiculous of you to be criticizing another religion’s music, all music is beautiful. Protestants/Anglicans give you great organ, orchestral music and congregational singing, there is no guitar…and even if there is, guitars also make beautiful music. Furthermore, it does not distract from God (maybe you are distracted). I guess you will say Baptist music is also distracting. While Latin hymns are beautiful to listen to, you don’t know what you’re singing/saying. Do you know the meaning of the lyrics that you’re singing? Maybe you like to be led on blindly, but I certainly do not.
      That is why the Second Vatican Council under Pope Paul VI on December 4, 1963 enacted into law a revision of the liturgy and the hymns to be said in the local language in order for the populace to participate intelligently…and I said… INTELLIGENTLY!!!. What’s the point of repeating words that you don’t understand. Furthermore, in some of the larger Anglican churches, the motets are sung (in Latin).
      I studied Latin for many years and for me, it was actually easier than Spanish or French, however, at this time, I don’t understand the meaning of the lyrics to the hymns unless it is written in English on the side. I’m not a lemming….unlike some others, I want to understand exactly what I’m reciting or singing.

      Morgan, I don't think you intended any offense, but your statement is riddled with fallacious reasoning. To put it bluntly, you are stating an opinion. Nothing more.
      I can say, for instance, that this type of music "distracts me from God" by virtue of its calming and sedative nature, lulling me into a frame-of-mind wherein I'm not as contemplative of my relationship of God as I could be, while several of the more complex and nuanced works of Captain Beefheart serve to augment my thought patterns toward a more attentive and "mentally awake" condition.
      It's no less factual than your statement. Not trying to belittle you or anything approaching that--I just want you to realize that your statements are tethered to a desire to separate yourself and your religion from those of other individuals, which is kind of juvenile and cretinous.

      It really doesn't pay to be dogmatic - there are other sites where Roman Catholics are disappointed with services being dominated by drums and guitars.

      I liked the Mass in Latin! The musical "modernation" of guitars "et al", breaks the santity of the sacred tradition of "church music", to make it seem like very "un-religious" to appease
      a segment of the church goers who frankly, don't respect the "traditional church service" or anything else like it!

    • @Brockett122
      @Brockett122 Před 9 lety +4

      Unfortunately, Catholics use those damn guitars too. Lack of any music education, you know. They reduce sacred music to it's LEAST common denominator.
      Really, people think a band in church is music fitting for a King?
      Gag, puke, bleech to that.

    "Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ." Listen carefully. You may hear as I do Mary adding, "No. No. Blessed? Yes. But don't sing of me. Sing only of what God has done, sending HIS son into this world-- for you."
