- Learn how to make your own colored decorating sugar! There are only 2 ingredients you most likely already have in your pantry. Doing it this way is not only more economical but also has unlimited color possibilities!
What you'll need:
1/4 cup white sugar
40 drops liquid food coloring
Put your sugar into a jar with tight fitting lid and ad 10 drops of food coloring. Put the lid on and shake vigorously until food coloring is dispersed evenly. Add 10 more drops of food coloring and shake vigorously again. Spread out onto a plate and let dry for a few hours. Break up clumps with a fork or back of a spoon and repeat the coloring process again adding 10 drops of food coloring at a time for a total of 40 drops. Again, spread out onto a plate to dry for a few hours. Break up with a for or back of a spoon and store in a zip top bag or airtight container. Done!
I found if you add all 40 drops of food coloring at once, the sugar becomes a solid ball of sugar and the food coloring doesn't mix in very well. I also tried using gel food coloring and it didn't color the sugar at all, breaking the gel into tiny bits. Using a fork to mix it in broke the sugar crystals into a powder which is not the effect I was going for. - Jak na to + styl
That it does! Wonderful solution to color the dough. I never would've thought of doing that.
We did that last year. This year when I wanted to make candy cane cookies and had no food coloring, I used colored sugar in the batter. Worked fine that way too. Sometimes it pays to 'think outside the box'.
Awesome idea. Never thought of making my own. Thank you so much.
Thank you. I had the funky green, now I have a nice bright green. Just in time Christmas.
Wow thanx I have been looking on how to make my own. Can’t wait to use it on my cookie for Christmas
This is a great how to video. Thank you for making this
I always enjoy watching you and learning . Thank you for sharing your the best.
Mercedes in Las Vegas Nevada.
Perfect for making cocktail glass 'rimmers' for my margaritas and cosmos!
Thanks for this video, I priced the sugar sprinkles at the store and it was almost $3.00, a small jar too. Plan to make your recipe this weekend. THANKS!!!! :D
Cleverer idea, thanx for sharing
Thank you for this . I refuse to buy coloured sugar knowing it’s this easy to make . A life saver 👍
Neat idea. Saves money too!
how simple, thank you!
Thx, I figured if u can purchase colored sugar you could make it! Thx
Ur color sugar super gd,so easy 2 make, bravo!
Thank you, just made some, cant wait to test it out, will this work on a cake?
This was very helpful. I was hoping not to have to buy gel coloring. Thank you!
Thank you Mercedes!
This really does work I tryed it at home
He says 40 and wrote 40 but only put 20 drops oops!
Thank u for this I was just spasing last night I couldn't find my colored sugar!!!
Thank u 💗. We don't have coloured sugar that I know of here in New Zealand
if this goes okay, I thank you for saving my mother's birthday cake XD . Not a baker myself and I'm baking the baker of the family a cake, despite her not liking icing.
Very nice
Wow! Great tip. Feel silly for never thinking of this before! The money I've spent on colored sugar.........
Right!!!
Omg thank you easy
I'm curious to know if ready-mixed drinks would be a good idea as well for it has flavouring
I never though 80K people would need to know how to make whipped cream so you never know! LOL!!
With something as simple as this, I can't believe they charge what they do for it. Hope this can save you a few bucks!
You can dilute the gel with some water. I also made some colored sugar, but I did it with gel food coloring for cake icing. But yes, it's too thick to use right in the sugar. Put a tiny bit of it in a non stain-able container and ad just a wee bit of water to it at a time and mix it until it's as thin as the liquid coloring. Then drop it in your sugar just like you did and it works. Tah dah!
Thanks for sharing. I like your idea of using food coloring. But I just prefer using a ziplock bag instead of a bottle. This allows me to rub out any clumps for an even coating of colors. Particularly, thanks for the tip on using 10 drops at a time. Cheers!
I made red sugar put in Tupperware but it got hard. Why
Thanks !!
So much easier ty
I tried the gel food coloring and didn't have any luck with it. I shook it just like the liquid but the gel didn't color the sugar, it just turned the glob of gel into smaller globs of gel. I had to mash it in with a fork to get it to color the sugar and by that time, I had powdered sugar.
The trick is to place a few drops of gel coloring into a zip lock bag with the sugar and work the sugar into the color against the bag and it takes time but it works. Place it into a bag and use your fingers to work it through. Give it a go with the regular sugar and see how it turns out with a small amount
Is that good for health to add 20 drops of food color for a very less quantity of sugar?
Looks great. Apparently the gel color food dye is supposed to be better as it doesn't clump up as much and make it too wet.
Please help me to make colored sugar. What is the best way to make wool? What kind of color and brand should I use and should we wait for it to dry?
Will the color run if I use them on cupcakes buttercream frosting?
Cn use orange food colorin?Ur sugar so nice!!!pls reply!
I made 4 colors of sugar & after shaking each one in it's jar, I broke up the lumps with my fingers, then pushed each through my sifter & spread them out to dry on wax paper.
if i pulverize it will it still be colored powdered sugar?
thank you very much sir
Leave it to a man to do this the easy way!! Love it!! Thank you so much!
right, everybody else had you buying a raw sugar and placing it in the oven etc.....
6 hours for coloured I will go buy it
does it have to dry to use it for candy floss
I think it works a lot when you sift the sugar.
How else was counting whenever he was adding the food coloring😂😂
haha I was too
LOL , my mum was
Now I feel like a dope for buying those expensive jars of colored sugar. It gets expensive. Thank you . I will never buy it again. :)
is it going to be wet afterwards?
Boa ideia 👍😙
Good day could you please tell me how to make red cotton candy because even though I make the sugar dark red it still comes out pink
Hi.. I just watching your video. After you spread the colour sugar on plate, no need to bring it in the oven? Coz I saw in other vid, they use oven to dry the sugar..please replay.
Only if you use gel which is only 2 drops
Me and my friend did this but with salt and if you put water on it the color rubs off and it makes kinda like a food coloring
Cool
Thank you so much for this because I hate those costly little bottles!
M Paxton I do as well! The colors are limited and they are ridiculously overpriced for what they are. Hope you enjoy making your own now!
Crouton Crackerjacks
I looked in the store yesterday and there were only those little bottles of red and green, they were well over three dollars a bottle, and who knows which Christmas they were manufactured for! I wanted purple, green and gold for my King Cakes. I used the drop food coloring and plastic bowls with tight lids, and shook the sugar very hard and had no clumping. The purple came out a little dark, almost charcoal color, but I know next time to start off with less color and add as I need it. The green and gold were perfect! Thanks again. Happy Mardi Gras!
Where u get food coloring
They're in the baking supplies at just about any grocery store, or at Walmart.
Some craft stores that have cake decorating supplies may have them.

I first tried it with gel food coloring and it does NOT work. You end up with tiny globs of gel in your sugar and it barely tints it. By the time I got it mashed into the sugar with a fork, I had powdered sugar.
Very useful video, thank you. We looked this up like a year ago and we used it again today. Have you had success making pink?
melonfarmer3 Yep. Use pink food coloring, LOL!! I've stopped using the liquid drops because it takes so much coloring to get a nice color so I use gel food coloring now which comes in dozens of colors.
I used powdered food coloring and didn't have to wait for the sugar to dry
thanks
I'm have a aquarium Can you please tell me how to change Pink color sugar sand to White color sugar stone permanently awaiting for your reply thanks.

ty
What happens if I add 3 drops of food colouring onto icing sugar??Will it remain dry?!Please answer! Thx
it won't it will turn to a paste
Use gel colouring and you can use it immediately
👌
How about powdered food colouring plz reply
You can put drops in powdered colour and mix it then add in sugar and make your colour sugar
If you use the gel it’s more concentrated. You won’t need as much
Needed to dry, I didn’t know
Can I use this for candy floss

Oliviabandwarped thx

Jimmy Nioutron yes
Hi
I thought it was 20???
he needs to show proff if it works
Don't feed these nasty chemicals to anyone, please.
Oh please, can't have fun anymore? My mom used these in her angel food cakes and we colored eggs at Easter. She lived til the ripe old age of 84.
M Paxton Statistics clearly show that in general, smokers cut years off of their lives, but there's always that person who will bring up grams or gramps who smoked and drank until they were 95 (or 84)! :>) I totally avoid the following for my health: any hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils; artificial colors or flavors; artificial sweeteners; fake creamers (Coffee-mate, etc) and high-fructose corn syrup. I could eat better. The only people I know that eat perfectly are my neighbors, who are radical old-school 7th-Day Adventists. I generally eat very little sugar or white bread, and I gave up cold cereal (highly addicting!) and pop about seven years ago. We try to buy as much organic as possible and eat homemade whole wheat bread and salads. But I will never accept whole wheat pasta; it just doesn't fly. I have probably cut my sugar consumption down by 95%. I believe that our diets are giant contributors to cancer, heart disease and early death.
I agree that moderation is the key word with everything, but some people do so much worrying about how much time they have they don't spend any time really living. Worrying and constant states of anxiety are detrimental to health. You can't live your life in a box. Things that don't bend will break. If I go out to eat I don't want to sit and nit pick a menu to death. If you're going to do that, you may as well stay home and cook for yourself. A little bit of wine, even a glass every day, won't hurt you. It's when you drink the whole bottle every day you get into trouble.
M Paxton I agree. I know I could eat healthier, so I guess some would call me a hypocrite, but there are certain things I don't indulge in, especially consistently.
good
Can you eat it
I knew that
Yes, you can Eat it.
