  • I set up this water tank as a test of the Father Fish Channel's "Dirted Tank" set up for fish. I think it will work out very well for aquatic insects as a longterm tank. This is a new territory for me in setting up aquariums for aquatic insects and so your suggestions are welcomed.
    I will be making more long format videos like this on this topic on a regular basis as I work with more tanks and update the next steps with respect to the tank shown in this video.

    My 5 gallon tank full of aquatic beetles is doing very well. My large scavenger beetle is so much fun to watch! My tank has been heavily planted for a few years and the bugs love it. But thanks for the tip on leaf litter! Ill add some tomorrow

    Very insightful.I love the setup and the fact that one only has to change a fraction of the water is great. Eventually the eco system takes care of itself for the most part. Happy Holidays to you and your family Pete. 👍

      The water scorpions don't make great tankmates for other small organisms, unfortunately, and so many of the other ones will become feeders if I leave them in there long enough or don't replace the small water boatmen, for example.

    I set up a 40 gallon that ill use for aquatic insects in the spring. I need a variety of plants in there cause the species im most keen to breed (dytiscus verticalis, dytiscus harrisii) lays inside plant stems. Ill catch some as soon as the ice melts off the pond. Apparently the cold temperatures are nessesary for egg production, so next winter ill diapause them inside a wine cooler/beer fridge. Im hoping ill be able to have a perpetual breeding colony and sell the beetles 50 bucks each.
    If the pond wasnt frozen i would go collect some water boatmen to breed them as feeders, its too late for that so ill go buy some freshwater shrimp and see if i can get a breeding colony. Gonna set up 2 10 gallons today, ill leave them filterless like you have here and see what happens.

    I set up my own one of these about a month ago with a few aquatic insects from your shop as well as a fairly large colony of scuds. and I also added some floating plants as well, mainly duckweed

    Caddis fly larvae are pretty cool but kind of small for observation

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  Před 9 měsíci

      We do have one caddisfly larva in that tank now, actually. They tend to like a very pristine and fast flowing creek, however, and so I don't see myself working with them too much in the near future.

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  Před 6 měsíci

      A heater is not necessary. Room temp is definitely just fine, but they do tolerate extremes from freezing to 80+ degrees if they are subjected to it for short periods for some reason. I made a vdeo a while back where I found a Thermonectus frozen in ice, thawed it out and it was still alive!

  • @Natu_Visu

    Won't they need a land piece? Every type of aquatic insect I have tried putting into a fully water tank have drowned.. 😞

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Aquatic insects swim and the majority of the ones people keep swim to the surface to catch a breath and then dive again, rendering a land piece unnecessary in the context of drowning. However, many do like to hold onto something in the water column.
      I do have emergent vegetation in my tanks and that allows the ones that (sometimes) like to get out of the water the chance to do that. Water lettuce is the main type I'm using at this time.

      @@bugsincyberspace
      Thank you for the response!
      In my tank, I had some floating plants, and multiple wood pieces that extended above water level.
      However, when I kept water boatmen, they would one by one be found floating dead at the surface.
      I tried water scorpions (Nepa), and they'd be found swimming away from land into the open water, and eventually sink and crawl around on the bottom.
      I would fish them up and put them on the branches again.
      One morning one of them was lying dead on the bottom of the tank, so I released the other one.
      Then I tried water mantises (Ranatra), and they were doing good for a long time, until one of them again one morning was found dead on the bottom of the tank. It had seemingly gotten stuck in some aquatic moss and drowned.
      I have also twice tried common native aquatic beetles, and then had always, again, been found dead after some days.
      So by all that I was convinced that all aquatic needed a full piece of land somewhere to go up on, and that mine were either unable to rest on the branches or unable to find them, as I would see them always swimming around the sides of the tank into the glass, as if searching for a way out of the water.
