    Hi Andrew, always good to see your "inventions".
    Love it - great idea. In order to hold the wing spar in the wing a little more tight, roll some masking tape around the spar and it will prevent the wings from sliding apart,
    Also the spar is re-usable this way. Happy flying. Cheers

    Great! Using a bent spar one could easily fit a nice dihedral wing as well! (They would need to bevel the top edges a bit to properly meet together ). Thanks for sharing!

    For the past 7-8 months I've been trying to figure out the best way to drill holes in the wings of the new planes I've bought to add CF tubes, knowing the very high likelyhood of crashing (I'm new to flying RC planes) and then the sorrow of having to by new wings and fuses to repair them. Found your video and BAM the light suddenly went on. Your method is so simple, accurate and effective. Never thought of using the CF tube itself to drill the foam out. Duh, was that a no-brainer. I was going nuts trying to find super long (ie 30") drill bits in various inch sizes that would correlate to metric CF tubing sizes. Damn, I could NOT hit that subscribe button fast enough.       @@AndrewNewton Hi Andrew, I have a technical question, if you don't mind, with regards to this superb video you've done.. I have several brand new foam planes I bought recently, mostly warbirds and all are still in the box waiting for me to assemble. I want to reinforce the wings, (also elevators, rudders and fuselage) before I attempt to maiden them but I am not sure how to decide what diameter CF tube to use. The wingspans range in size from 1200mm to 1800mm. How to best choose (or calculate) a proper size CF tube to provide added strength? I am not sure what would be too large or too small for any given wing thickness. Also, I am assuming it would be best to have a CF tube placed as close to the LE as possible as that's where the impact would most likely happen on the wings. The nose of the fuselage would also be subject to impact as well but for now I'm just trying to focus on the strengthening wings first with hopes to keep damage to a minimum. I also plan to apply blenderm tape to the LE to have a nice firm "seal" on the foam. Obviously the exact placement of CF tubes will vary due to the design differences of each wing. All I am trying to figure out now is how to decide what CF tube "diameter" to use, ie 1/2 the wing thickness? Less? More? Note this would be in addition to the factory wing spar which typically does not run the entire length of the wing. I plan to add these CF tubes to run from close to the wing tip all the way to the wing root. I am not worried too much about the minimal weight that this would add. Thanks for any insight.     Like it. I used an ally tube in a similar manner to cut an additional short spar position in my Phoenix 2000 wings, so that I could break it down quickly for transportation.

    Fantastic concepts.
    I just recently rigged up something similar using clamped down sheet metal (24"×36"), magnets, two 36" L-angle irons (as guide tracks) and a Dremel with a router bit to cut spar channels into thirty 1/2" thick blue foam ribs. Intend on using shear webs in between the spars.
    Really liked the idea with the drill and carbon fiber tube.

      Yeah, the router makes quite a mess but I figure that's why somebody invented the infamous, "Shop•Vac". Cuts are quick and clean once vacuumed all up.

      I've got to get mine onto the rocket 🚀 ship to Mars.
      I've only got so much room next to my chair 💺 as you can imagine.
      I'm only taking a couple of bread rolls and some ham and I thought I'd bring a couple of doughnuts to share with the guys on board.
      We'll have to grow some vegetables while we're on Mars for our survival.
      I think it's going to be a fun holiday.

    Great ideas. Seeing your hot-wire template and your positioning of the carbon drill on the end of the wing made me think that using a template with your carbon drill might be an further improvement on an already great technique. This would ensure you hit the exact spot you want to on the end of the wing profile.

    Great idea! Could you build a bit of dihedral into the wing by placing a small block under the wing tip? Then drill the spar.

      RCfragmentor Yes, but with this airfoil there is only 8mm of foam above and below the spar to play with so you would risk poking the spar out the bottom.

      +William James Thanks William. Currently I'm testing cutting shallow slots top and bottom and gluing in CF strips with CA. 3 x 0.5mm or 1 x 6mm

      Trouttaranaki No extra ballast, occasionally use a heavier battery if it's blowing hard but mostly not.

    Hi Andrew it would be interestig to see how the old kraft paper and white glue covering compares to the laminate film....ie a stiffer wing ?? The 1st time I read about this covering system was an article in the USA Model Aircraft magazine by James (?) St Clair back in the 80's or so...Rgds....Laurie

Always wondered if that method would work, and you have proved it does...It does require a bit of making, but so what, you only need to make it once right?...Impressed.....Now, I just want to see you skin them in fine glass cloth using a water based varnish...I saw this done recently by some local Students, and even they made it work rather well...!!!...Well done m8...:)

    Hi Andrew have foam cut my wings like on your video , just wondering I was going to laminate the wings with kraft paper and PVA wood glue , there is a video of a fella laminating his wing and claims no spar is needed just the laminate is needed, im a new to the hobby any help would be good, thanks for your videos I have foam cut 4 wings with that stuff from Bunnings

      Definitely, if it's not a big heavy model the skin could do the job of spars.

      Not that I'm aware of, most of my receivers have two antennas so one is always clear.

    The drilling was the route to go (less messy) But the covering also make's the wings much more stiff but I haven't tried paper and glue like LWJCarroll mentioned.

    in the beginning of the video you cut the wing, why do you cut at the bottom of the wing too if your airfoil is flat there so you could cut only the upper part? Is the foam plate not flat enough?

      Either no glue, just tape, or hot melt glue. Can't use solvent glues because they dissolve the foam.

    Hey Andy, using the shaft to drill the spar how did u prepare the tip to assist in cutting the hole? i.e. a glued on metal bit perhaps?

    How would you use this with a solid spar cylinder? I am using smaller 5mm rods as a spar for a relatively lightweight aircraft.
    I don't really want to glue anything, so is it required to glue it in a Hotwire cut hole?

      It's a tricky method to get right, has to be perfectly aligned and use a stiff enough CF tube. But I reckon you have the skills.

      @@AndrewNewton I think it's on the really long deep Cuts where it's going to start getting crazy. On my sheeted wings with the vacuum bagging I only need to go in maybe halfway mainly to join the wings together and give them support right in the middle where all the stresses are

    hello Andrew
    I have made a tool for this method, however, the carbon drill quickly gets hot during drilling and therefore the foam melts at the front / tip of the drill and becomes hard
    in the thinner part of wing, there are holes through the surface you might have a suggestion how to handle this?

      Just have to stop often and clear out the core of foam then go again

      Yes I use Knauf brand XPS insulation foam (probably only available in Australia). Same as Blue or Pink modelling foam. You could practice with polystyrene packing foam but the XPS is stronger.

      +Andrew Newton thank you sir, I try to find the foam but my luck ran out, the only foam I can find the packing thermacol, which is not very strong, any chance if I can use the same and use something to harden it out
      I leave in Dubai (UAE) and nothing of this is available

      Extra layer of packing tape or iron on covering would do the job. Maybe use balsa correx (corrugated plastic board) for control surfaces

      I was referring to document laminating plastic that you apply using a warm iron. It's an alternative to packing tape covering.

      @@koperaljali3253 If you haven't tried it yet, bore the hole(s) first. Then use the holes on each end to line up the hot wire airfoil guides and cut the airfoil.

    Make the hole first and then cut the airfoil!!!! : )

      +Skycharly Never thought of that but it might be the best solution. Would have to accurately position the template around the hole. Thanks Skycharly

      My template has the hole. I fit the rod, leave it sticking out, and then the template Cheers!

      Skycharly Excellent thinking here. This would potentially make dihedral much easier to achieve too. I might give it a try tomorrow. Thanks - Dave
