  • Answering some questions about why we are growing food in the winter. We are also trying our luck again with planting indoor potatoes inside the winter greenhouse. Several of the seeds that we planted in the winter greenhouse have now germinated as well. The way we are heating the greenhouse with wood and electric heat backup seems to be working so far. This is our greenhouse in the winter.

    Living independently is just plain smart ! The sharing of the processed meat is genious ! Now you just need a cattleman in the group !

    You guys are doing the right thing. I hate going to supermarkets, dealing with rude people/nasty staff, waiting in lines and wasting gas (and time). There are so many reasons to grow your own food.

    I live in Calgary, Alberta. I bought a home 5 years ago. A complete renovation. We built a tiny greenhouse with the old windows and wood. We even had a usable screen door. We took a PVC pipe and cut it in half to install a rain barrel inside. This year we are going solar. Thank you for your videos.

    My mom told me that tomatoes and potatoes are so close that you can graft a tomato plant on a potato plant and they will grow together. It would be so interesting to grow tomatoes all summer and when it comes time to pull the plant there are potatoes underneath. Wouldn't that be funny on CZcams?

    Hi Dave, iam in Alberta and started a 8x12 greenhouse last winter in February. With only a small electric heater, it worked great! I found my electric bill was about $100 higher then pervious years, but I didn't have a wood stove like you have. Best $100 I ever spent😃

Hardly ever go to the vegie shop only 300m up the road if you buy from them it's either use straight away or put it on the compost.

    The monologue is a nice romantic approach to life. But do not forget that there is a reason why all countries have a well-guarded seed bank to our aid, in case of a sudden a vegetation crisis should wipe out the seeds in nature. In other words, all of us are dependent on the large community taking active responsibility.

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  Před 3 lety +3

      And all of us are going to be at the back of the line if such a catastrophe, or any catastrophe for that matter, were to occur - which is exactly why we continually add our own seed to our own seed bank. No chance we are going to rely on the powers that be to keep us fed.

    The folks that usually ask that question are the ones that have the luxury of popping over to the grocery store for lettuce. Who wants to drive 60+ miles for a head of lettuce for Taco Tuesday? Just sayin'. I don't want to stand in lines for food if I can grow it. New to the gardening game and trying to figure it out and would much rather have my own food on hand and know how it is grown.

    Ever considered an automated pellet stove? Or some other automated means to keep your greenhouse warm throughout the night?
    Heaters on powerbars is not a good idea :)

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  Před 3 lety

      Considered the pellet stove idea. Too many moving parts, and relying on outside product to run though. The electric heat is a temporary fail safe. Infloor heat coming summer 2021! Big ole pile of poop to generate the heat.

    I would not even bother answering the question from the beginning of the video, unless these are your immediate friends and family. people who ask questions like this are deeply lost in life and nothing can help them to move out from their matrix, neither blue or red pill will work and of course your explanation will just make them angry and more confused. so leave them alone to be slaves. God bless you your farm and family!
