I really hope the crows stay the same. That would be HILARIOUS.
I agree
Especially the ones that talk about climate change.
Vivian was an unexpected party member and I was so shocked when she joined my party cause I thought she was just joining u to get your body back. She's was definitely my ace against the final final boss
Did you know that she’s trans?
@TheOnlyDiet11 I mean I was today years old when I found this out but I don't really care about her gender lol but I see her as female so
@@TheOnlyDiet11That's never really been confirmed.
@@TheOnlyDiet11 She's not though. This is a common misconception from a mistranslation of the Japanese text.

As someone who didn't know Tech had a red light instead of blue in the Japanese version, it changes so much about his character and makes him actually seem slightly intimidating at first.
a light doesnt change that much, be serious
@silverreaps6803 Normally, it wouldn't, but this character is literally just a light on a wall. The red light better reflects him being an evil super computer when you first meet him, red being the color of danger.
@@mitwhitgaming7722I think it would be cool if the light is red whenever you first meet him but the more he learns about life and love and everything it changes to Blue.
@@cyclops8238 exactly
@@mitwhitgaming7722 if that happens then yeah itd be more significant, but if it stays red the whole time it wont matter. Itd only matter for your immediate first impression which isnt that long lol
There's also the Pianta Boyfriend that mentions something like "look at the tv" to the player, they will probably change that to "look at the screen" since you can play now in dock mode/handheld
What if it was different depending on if you were in docked or handheld mode.
@@Getlucky12. And if you (un)dock the Switch with that dialogue shown it changes between both versions 👀

I’ve always loved Vivian for who she is as a character and her amazing moveset. No matter what gender is chosen, Vivian will always be my favorite.
Calm down weirdo
theres not really a gender "chosen", she is a woman and identifies as a women in every version of the game. She clearly doesnt identify as a male or nonbinary in any depiction of the game from my knowledge
Best answer ever, the Vivian gender debate have to end, its becoming toxic
@@ivanzoneBR yes people have to accept that she is trans
I mean.. I'd definitely be considered if someone you liked you started to dislike because they are not cisgender or heterosexual lol
Her being trans really doesn't change anything except give her way more character and make her sister's way more evil and more real (especially for a Mario game)
i really hope they dont change the crows dialogue that was so random and funny and it'd be hilarious to see people who never played TTYD before react to them
Ya
Vivian is one of the best party members in the game. Despite coming from an evil family, She's so kind and innocent. I won't mind if they added more to her personality. But most of it, they don't have to change. Vivian will always be of my favorites.

So first off, you're projecting your own belief onto them.
Secondly, Vivian being transgender is in the ORIGINAL JAPANESE VERSION. So, you know, Nintendo devs had that in mind for her, and then Americans decided to censor it for the rest of the world since they are one thing and another.
"I'm 100% positive that Vivian is female worldwide" Well guess what, you're 100% wrong since, like I mentioned, the devs made it clear she's transgender. You know literally nothing and just push your belief as "fact."

Plus, timid shadowy ghost witch girl is a really cool design for a character, especially amongst the other partners which are based on enemy types. Huge fan of “villains” changing sides and becoming a core part of the hero’s party in games

Correction, the whole Vivian situation is a misunderstanding due to a mistranslation (most likely google translate by fans) which most believe in face value without even bothering to look into it.
Beldam still refer to her has a female in the Japanese Version but still slander her by saying she is a man and or someone that is crossdressing whenever Vivian has the spotlight. Since she is the prettiest of the 3 Sisters. I've even played through the Japanese Version alongside my friends back in Japan who was studying English. Even Goombella description seems to prove this misconception, "Her name is Vivian. From the shadow sisters, [she's] the youngest sister... no, um brother?" Goombella wasn't even sure because of Beldam's remarks.
While it doesn't matter since I would like for her to be trans, the fact that this is whole misunderstanding was due to a mistranslation is pretty amusing to me. Check the various Japanese Forums, they were surprised that Westerners think Vivian is trans.
Huh, neat.
This.... Huh?
I'm sorry but how does this debunk that she's previewed as trans in the Japanese version? I'm a bit confused
In the dialog you quoted it is confusing between a sister and a brother..
@@bareq99I think they’re saying that in the Japanese version, Vivian’s sisters refer to her as a male because they are calling her ugly, even though she’s the pretty one. Probably explains why it was translated over to just directly calling her ugly in the English version.
@@PowerGem3000 oh
Hmm..
But isn't there a line in the Japanese version where she says "I'm a woman and I'm proud of it"??

@@bareq99 well she’s not being called ugly, she’s being called a man.
Just FYI, French version of the game also clearly depicted Vivian's correct backstory. :) European French at least, dunno bout the Canadian French version.
I'm pretty sure that there was no Canadian French translation of this game. Mario games before Super Mario Galaxy were released in North America in English only.
There is no Canadian French version, we got our games in English until the Wii, at least as far as I'm aware.
Which is ironic considering how strongly we feel about French here lol
@@Mercure250 It's true, NA releases never had a French version until the Wii.
I doubt they'll change anything. It'll most likely keep all regional differences in terms of dialoge.
They'll probably try to be more faithful to the Japanese script like other remakes Nintendo has done. If they keep the censorship intact there will be HEAVY backlash.

And I don't personally mind the darker elements. I'd be disappointed if the dark stuff gets censored, but it probably wouldn't be a total deal breaker for me.
we fricken don't need 'dark stuff' in a Mario game! At least not a bloody room with an outline of a dead toad! What's next, gory stuff in the next Mario game?
@@sandiego2380 You're allowed to have your own tastes without getting angry at strangers for having different tastes.

4:18 You are mistaken. Vivian's censorship only ocurred in the USA and German translations as far as I know. In the spanish version it's also like you said in japanese and italian versions.
I really hope the remake is more faithful to the original Japanese version, even if they had to bump up the rating to E10, I just want less censorship
I definitely don't want the Japanese version. I wish I can choose the American version. I barely knew about the Vivian situation. Someone brought it up in a video and I randomly learned about it yesterday.
@@kennymichaelalanya7134 Is it important to you that this character isn't trans for some reason? Why?
@@kennymichaelalanya7134don't worry it's gonna be the american version, also she isn't trans in the japanese version, they were just bullying her.
@@GCDeadshot This was always my understanding as well.
Beldam isn't calling Vivian a man to be nice, she's saying it as a way of calling her ugly. Basically like "what you aren't a man? Cause you look like one" kind of situation. Done on purpose as an insult.
In that context it makes sense that the localizers interpreted this as "you are ugly" and simply them insulting her. Probably wanted to make it clear what kind of insult they were giving Vivian. Goombella and the others are the ones that are left confused by Beldam's comments... like "well we thought she was a girl... but guess she's a man?".
Not to mention that Beldam notoriously in the game is a liar, and constantly wants to blame and make Vivian miserable. So can we really take Beldam at face value for telling the truth here.
@@GCDeadshot They were bullying her because she was trans in the Japanese Version
It should be noted, that while the rating is seemingly unchanged in the USA, it has gone up in both Japan and Europe
You forgot to mention that Mario's gesture when he talks to an NPC would be 100%changed for the European version
Vivian is girl. In the Japanese version, Beldam called Vivian a man as an insult. Also we shouldn’t trust Google translate like that
Yes. A girl. A trans girl
YES, thank you for saying that. I have always thought that vivian being trans was too weird to be true. Contrary to popular belief, vivian is biologically female in all parts of the world and that in the Japanese version, it was merely an insult. It's really sad and annoying to know that so many people on the internet are convinced that vivian is trans when she is just objectively not. Nintendo does not approve of that lifestyle. But alot of people on the internet do a good job trying to convince you to believe all kinds of garbage. That's why we must be vigilant and not fall for it. Again, thank you for your help in pointing out the true simple facts.😊😊😊
@@bloodyroses4664No, she has not been confirmed to be a trans girl. Calling her a "man" is just meant to say that she looks too ugly for a girl.
@StrawberryShartCak3 She's officially confirmed in the Italian dialogue to be a trans girl. She directly says "You two may be sisters, but I feel like a woman too, and I'm proud to have become one."
@@bloodyroses4664 That could have been a mistranslation, maybe it never actually said she "became one", and really, that sort of sounds as if she simply made herself look more like a girl, like she might be (as in, she may have poorly presented herself as a girl before, but now she is properly dressed and all like other girls. It's kind of hard to actually explain, but it doesn't have to do with being trans.)
Maybe I'm just going of too many scenarios when it comes to what they meant by certain texts in the game, but things definitely could have been translated wrong or been phrased incorrectly.
The Vivi situation unfortunately feels like a double edged sword. If they keep the localization for Vivi the same as it was back in 2004 then people who are more progressive will complain that NoA is still stuck in the past and too afraid to address Vivi's true identity head on, but on the other hand if the game does use a more Japanese-accurate localization this time around then people who are more conservative will be complaining "Nintendo went woke!" like when some people moaned and groaned that Peach wasn't a straight "damsel in distress" type character in the Illumination movie. Personally I'd like the translation this time to be more Japanese-accurate, the subject is not nearly as taboo as it was 20 years ago, but I also wouldn't be shocked if NoA decided they'd just keep the script the same as it was back in 2004.
Imo worst case would be them changing it in all languages to remove any mention of her being trans. I really don't think they would do that, but I'm seeing people here suggest it.
Those same guys also tried to backtrack, once the movie was found out to be successful. They really shouldn't base their decisions on bad actors.
I feel like the complaints about the Mario Movie are a bit of a misinterpretation of what happened. Woke Hollywood is very much a thing, and Peach, being a more assertive, capable character, walked a line and could have easily been girlboss-ified into an unrecognizable character. Seeing her outside of her dress made people wonder if that's the direction the movie was going, but was more than happy to admit that they were wrong. (At least everyone I follow about it)
But yeah, even for people who know that the script got changed for her, I've seen people argue that she doesn't identify as a woman at all and that she's just a crossdresser, or that she isn't biologically male and her sisters just called her a man as a basic insult. It's amazing how far people are willing to bury their head in the ground.
@@QuincyQuinn95True True- I remember seeing some posts complaining as to why she out of her dress in most of the trailers (or frankly, at all). Even though the bodysuit it's based off comes from the No. 1 selling game on both the Switch and Wii*. 😅
How I see it man I wouldn’t call it going woke this was from 2004 way before everyone started shouting out they’re all kinds of things, if they established her being trans I wouldn’t hence that’s been an original trait of her since 20 years ago
I think I'm fine however they want to handle Vivian, but I'm sure people will be mad no matter what. Doesn't change the fact that she's easily one of the best partners.
You know how there were sprites for the partners in the first Paper Mario game, and only two of them made it in when completing TTYD? What if in the remake those sprites of his other partners make it in
I just want to know if there will be a new mode that allows us to go on the adventure Luigi brags to Mario about but we see what really happens.
Theyre probably not gonna change anything about how vivan was in the US version, but if they do, we better get Mother 3.
The game is rated E, Vivian will be portrayed as she was originally in America, but the Japanese rating is actually a bit higher. So, that suggests that Vivian might be trans in the Japanese game. Also, that Toad outline might be in the Japan version still.
Well speaking of GBA there's Mario's mailbox SP and the scariest part that was removed in the US was Mario's Doopliss idle after being controlled by the Shadow Queen when choosing to become her servant.
And I'm sure they're gonna fix the biggest mistake the game made which was choosing to attack or not attack Grodus.
And the recolored Chuckola Cola bottle for looking like wine.
Vivian really is the million dollar question.
It really isn't. She's gonna be a chick.
The original English release had several small localization errors, like calling Crystal Temple from Paper Mario 64 "Goomstar Temple" or the Goomba King the "Chestnut King". While I'm obviously interested in the bigger changes, I also hope they take this remake as a chance to fix those little mistakes, too.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure the Playboy Bunny costume is actually copyrighted now, so those bunny ears are unlikely to return.
There's one error in particular that I really hope they fix. In the final scene, after your fight with Grodus, Grodus challenges you again, and you can either say "attack!" Or "don't attack", but Grodus' response is bugged and they're completely switched. if you say "don't attack" He goes "YOU DARE DEFY ME?!" Etc
Playboy Bunny is only copyrighted in America and has been since the 1960s. In Japan it's free reign which is why you see so many bunny girls in Japanese media compared to Western media.
Welcome back bunny costume boo girls
Vivian is my favorite partner next to Goombella
Regardless of gender, Vivian will always be my favourite partner in TTYD.
4:32 Actually, the French and Spanish localizations keep the Trans part of her character, as well.
There is no 'trans part' to Vivian's character.
@@t-06 But the French version still keeps the Trans part. I would know, as I can read French (not Spanish, so making that mistake may be understandable due to word of mouth).
@@t-06do you speak Spanish
4:27 That's misinformation, actually. The French and Spanish versions did not cut her transexuality. And the Italian version made it stronger. Only the English and German localizations censored her.
Everyone seemingly forgets about Mario and Flurrie and the X button (Field Move). Mario knows where to squeeze to get the most out of her abilities. 😉
In the latest trailers of the remake you see this move and it’s much clearer that he’s holding her hand so that he also doesn’t get blown away.
_"but her sisters misgender and refer to her as a man"_
It's not just the sisters. Goombella's Tattle, the UI Party description, Goom Goom, and Super Paper Mario all call Vivian a boy explicitly in Japanese.
That line in Japanese wasn't there as an insult, but as an introduction to Vivian's gimmick throughout the game which will be the confusion and people's reaction to said confusion.
this is true, but it's a writing decision i can't imagine them replicating even if they stuck true to the original intent for the character. vivian is clearly trans, but the original japanese script (being a game from 2004) treated misgendering her as a good thing (as long as you're not being too mean about it, I guess). so the two extremes of "completely rewriting her character" and "staying 100% true to the original script's intentions" both seem kinda weak to me. just my opinion though
@@FirstRecords204 or maybe Vivian was meant to be a rep for Otokonoko culture? Same intention with Bridget till the latest entry changed to trans woman.
@@Daigon95 I've seen people argue this, but I find it really weak. If Vivian was intended as a femboy, then why make a fuss about addressing her by her "correct" "male" gender? She wouldn't self-identify as a woman in that case and her sisters calling her a man wouldn't be an insult.
@@QuincyQuinn95 Sisters hav been abusing Vivian since their creation and constantly tells him they dont like him and will never approve of him bc he is a guy.
Vivian crossdresses and insists tht he is a woman to them. At an attempt to get the love and approval he wants.
But they continue insulting and abusing him but rarely they give the approval he is looking for, which is enough for him.
Mario and Co come along to develop his character where he learns to self love and stand up for oneself. Doesn't need to change bc his friends love him for who he was and doesnt need to hide.
But in the end, it will come down to the remake itself.
If they change up the original japanese script, where there is no ambiguous signs of either crossdresser or trans; Then Vivian will b canon of a female woman.
and up to ppl if they want to accept or deny the new canon.
@@Daigon95 I find this argument a bit weak because Vivian continues to present as a woman after leaving them, and furthermore participates in running gags exclusive to the female party members. Chapter 4 is about names, identity, and being recognized for who you are. It thematically makes sense for the main partner of that chapter to be transgender.
I don’t remember if Vivian was supposed to be transgender or a cross dresser. A lot of people seem to conflate the two when they’re not at all related.
The translated text has vivian saying "You two may be sisters, but I feel like a woman too and I'm proud to have become one!" So yeah she's trans
@@bloodyroses4664that's the Italian version.
@wariot707 I didn't say it wasn't? Its still in the official release.
@@bloodyroses4664 sorry about that, I've just seen so many people use the Italian version saying it's the original.
@@bloodyroses4664 The Italian version…
These are some very interesting changes or alterations we may see. There is one other change I’m wondering if we would see in the remake. That being Mario’s greeting animation. In case you guys don’t know, in the original Japanese and International versions, Mario would bring his hand up and the palm of his hand facing in his direction as a way to greet people. In the European version of the game, the animation was removed out of concerns that players would draw parallels to the Nazi salute. So instead, they replaced the greeting animation with an animation of Mario talking.
Makes me wonder if the animation would be changed for the remake for all versions. Like Mario having his hand out as if he’s about to shake someone’s hand like his greeting animation in Super Paper Mario or have the original greeting animation, but have the palm of Mario’s hand face the player instead of Mario’s direction.
Man, Vivian will be a sure be a can of worms
In the french localization, Vivian is a boy. So... i'm now curious of how they will handle this character.
I'm guessing Nintendo is either gonna do exactly what they did with the original game or just make her outright female.
Toad Kid can now predict the future about super sticker colored origami!
Some changes i could see:
More Yoshi colors
Making the lottery not be a scam
Not allowing multiples of certain badges (+2 attack if Mario is in danger for example)
Reduced backtracking
Maybe hint at Mrs. Mowz being an unlockable partner
Boss rematches
2:58, just like how he teased Super Paper Mario. He could now tease the next Paper Mario game
*Remake*
It's supposed to be faithful to the original and I don't think changing a reference because people might not get It lines up with the goal of a remake
unless It's horribly offensive or a mistranslation I wouldn't worry about script changes
mistranslations/censorships with Vivian in particular aside, some minor jokes I could see changing just because, while its the job of a remake to be faithful, a joke still needs to land. If it's dated, they might need to punch it up a bit.
Like, with Pokemon games: in your character's bedroom, there's always the most modern Nintendo console. And if the game is a remake, do you still have the old console? No, you have the most modern one, because them having the console you would have is the joke/reference.
One thing they will definitely need to change is making it so you can't go behind the bars in the pianta parlor.
Wait, isn't GBA Toad seemingly missing from the gameplay footage we've seen from the game reveal? :0
I wonder if they will change that part where the dragon wants you to litterally sniff his feet
Her feet. Hooktail is female.
You mean she. It was confirmed later in the game it is was female dragon when the big brother was angry mario "defeated his little sister".
they did not
I think the most important question regarding Vivien, are the pink circles on her face her eyes or blushing cheeks?
It's blush
I always assumed they were their eyes. I seem to remember them blinking but that could be me misremembering. What do their eyes look like then?
@@TheSattocs I just always assumed her eyes were under her bangs
The talk about sources of energy is still very relevant, I don’t see why that specifically would be concern for change.
Im surprised you didn't mention peach's um.. "indecent" scenes. I could totally see them being altered
I would not be surprised if Vivian is handled in either one of these two ways:
A) No changes. Every language gets the same script as the original release.
B) All versions make her a girl, no mention of the fact of anything else. (Like in the original release's English version.)
Also, I think it's a bit of a smooth-over to say that "she was trans" in the original Japanese script; and as much as we all hope that Nintendo would do the progressive thing here (or would've like them to already have done so, 20 years ago), I don't think deluding ourselves is a good way to go about it.
It was played up as a joke in Japanese; I definitely don't think people know what they're wishing for when they say they want a "close to Japanese translation".
This is why what I want is the japanese translation, with editors coming through doing a sensitivity read, (preferably in all languages not just English in case I'm not clear). You update the text to make it read better for modern audiences
It's 'progressive' to say that a man can somehow transform into a woman? Sounds like 'progressive' means 'retarded'.
I feel like Vivian being confirmed a girl, the murder scene, and the bunny to cat ear change, etc, is good to change mainly for the demographic. This game is already packed with mature themes and if Nintendo IS going to give us back this style, they’re gonna have to play it much safer whether that’s for the better or worse, they don’t need to have angry parents coming after them for scarring or confusing their kids
Again, this is a Paper Mario game I never played so I assume the remake might have a few changes.
What fun ones
One thing that's changed is that TEC is red.
He was always red in the Japanese version but was changed to blue in English for some reason. Maybe they thought it was too close to its inspiration HAL.
Now it seems he's red in all versions.
Keep Vivian the same as the original. We do not want controversies or takedowns of this game
I hate literally being in the middle of issues like this for once, especially since I now have 3 sisters of my own...
I agree. Keep her the same as the original Japanese

Unpopular opinion here but Vivian's gender was more or less a joke in the Japanese translation of the game, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously, it was just an insult that Beldam would hurl at Vivian (a running joke the game would continue through its other things such as the tattle log)
you gotta make a ttyd gamexplain intro with the thousand year door and the gamexplain logo appears
01:02
THIS is the key piece of info that's convincing me any [already implemented] changes to this version of Thousand Year Door will err towards being "tamer" (but not necessarily sanitised).
I think the best way to go about vivian if they acknowledge her as trans is maybe just a random one off line for a character description but keep the international changes of the sisters just bullying her cause theyre dicks, and not specifically cause shes trans
Why? If anything it’s actual more relevant today then when the game first came out to depict her getting bullied due to being trans, since it’s happening IRL way more often than 20 years ago.
@@NopeNoWay-us2jk like I agree with you 100%. But I also don't wanna hear the endless arguments on "pUsHiNg ThE lEfT aGeNdA" if the info is in the wide open right there in the stories main narrative. Ya know?

That might actually have been what the case was in the first place. They could just have just been making fun of her by calling her a guy. It might have never been intended to imply she actually was biologically male, it might have just been that they were saying she looks like a guy or something similar. I don't know about every version, but at least in the Spanish one Vivian was also represented as a female-identifying male. I recall something about only the English localizations changing her backstory.
Correction: trans woman. Vivian changed her gender, she's no longer physically male and was always mentally female. She's a shadow blob creature, she can change her form/transition at will. Using the term "female-identifying male" to refer to trans women is highly offensive and mainly used by transphobes. They're not male and they're not "identifying" as female, they are fully female mentally and usually physically as well. (if they've gone through transition)
Secondly, yes, it was only the English language version of TTYD that censored Vivian's gender. All other language versions including Japanese, Korean, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish kept Vivian as a trans woman.
Yeah The Spanish version even named her Bibiana, after a famous trans actress, ad confirmed by the localizer.
She's a trans woman in that version, as well as every version besides English and German.
Now is it handled in the best way in every language? No, it was 2004 after all, which means we are relying on the understanding of the times by the writers. But it's something!
Yes, in Spain they directly say "¿Y de donde te has sacado eso de hermanas? ¡Pero si tu eres un hombre!" -> "Where did you get that of 'sisters'? But if you are a MAN!"
@KrimsonKattYT actually German takes it out too!
Trans women are called transgender females
They're definitely not going to implement the toad crime scene in the remake (or, at least not the blood stains). On the Nintendo website, the E age rating was determined by the presence of "Mild Fantasy Violence" and "Mild Suggestive Themes," but not "Mild Blood." So cannot be any blood in the game.
For rhe boo they will use the cat ears to avoid comparisons to playboy
Honestly it seems like no matter what they do someone will get upset. You're either going to have people calling the game transphobic or woke. Both sides will overreact to something.
>implying both sides are equal..??
@@bareq99Not really, just that they're both going to get upset. I don't know what they would be equal for.
@@bareq99 they could very well potentially make equal backlash, yes
I just read the original Japanese script translated to English and there is zero mention of Vivian being trans. ZERO. Beldam does insult her and basically says she’s so ugly and stupid she may as well be a man like Mario because he’s ugly and stupid… it’s an insult. She isn’t trans. It’s not true. I just read the original source material to confirm before I spoke on the subject
That’s what I thought! This is the first I’ve ever even heard about this. I ALWAYS Vivian was just a girl being abused by her sisters. I’ve been playing this game for years. That’s how I’ll always remember it, so I’m hoping it stays the same and she’s the same girl being abused by her sisters I’ve always known. That’s the only Vivian I know and appreciate. No offense to transgender people at all, I just only knew her as a woman. 👍🏻
I wonder if Mario will still use a GBA SP to check his E-Mail.
this game has such a dirty humor i cant believe that they will remake it 1:1
This is the only Game where i really hope they won't change ANYTHING
At least cencor wise
Remove the censorship, keep everything else the same. Toad murder in HD will be epic.
I'm glad Nintendo is going back to paper mario roots, this game better sell well to show nintendo that the other paper marios gameplay choices were... undesirable. It looked good but man it was so boring and lame, theming is great but we need substance like the rpg elements.
I shouldnt be nerding so hard as a 31 year old over this old peice of art. But here I am, hoping they add post game stuff like improved glitz pit.
the bunny ears thing is such a minor change, i wonder if it was due to associations with Playboy
100%
Wow that's a lot of comments. And I assume it's a lot of arguments about Vivian.
Regarding Vivian translation in Italian, I think it may have npthing to do with being trans, since in Italian mean people will insult other people by calling them the opposite gender, like calling a woman a "maschiaccio" or a man a "femminuccia". It has always been this way in Italian, so I think it was done to make her sisters appear more evil if you will without raising the age rating with more mature insults.
In the Italian version, she says: "Siete due sorelle, è vero... Ma anch'io mi sento una donna e sono fiera di esserlo diventata!", so yeah it's directly obvious it's about being trans
@@bloodyroses4664
Ok that is something more interesting.
There may still be the possibility that she is just referring to growing up though, since "donna" is used for older girls, like you become a "donna" after the age of 18, basically meaning the older sisters are maliciously treating her like a child which is insulting at least in Italy especially if you're an adult.
@@bloodyroses4664 'Obviously'. No, honey, that's bullshit. The original writers of the game are what we look at here, and expecting that famously socially conservative Japanese people would just shove in a tranny in a Mario game for no reason, and with zero relevance to the game is wishful thinking at best.
I always thought Vivian was called "a man" just as an insult, like "What do you mean, lovely ladies? You look like a crossdressing man" so she was never meant to be trans.
Basically like if she was called fat, even though she's not.
I think we can keep it that way. There are many other actually transgender characters if you want "representation".
Why have transgender characters if Trans women are women? 🤔
Wow that origami king intro is a blast from the past
will they have a "w" pin (later in the game) in the switch version?
They should just keep Vivian a girl to avoid controversy. Ain’t no way mis-gendering a trans character would slide in this generation 💀
I swear to almighty Goomboss, if they return Vivian to what she was supposed to be (a trans woman to be precise) and someone, whether on Twitter or what have you, has the audacity to somehow call the remake "woke", I'm gonna blow a fuse
It's already occurred in this comment section 😔
It's funny how the same people who will cry about Japanese games getting censored when brought overseas are actually very in favor of it happening when the character belongs to a group they don't like 🙂
literally the comment before this one, and the comment 4th after this are already doing it LMAOOOOO
Literally sandwiched between bigotry
Hope you got A LOT of fuses to blow dude!
The whole thing is a misunderstanding. Vivian isn't a guy, I hope you don't get too triggered.
@@EuropaTwin You’re right! Vivian was always a girl. Because trans girls are girls. But I’m so sorry that trans people’s existence triggers you so much. Sending thoughts and prayers! 😘
I think Nintendo is gonna do like Birdo and not making a big deal regarding Vivian. As long as she identifies herself as a woman, that’s all that matters.
4:20 as an italian I didn't know that vivian is the same as the japanese one
I know a lot of people think Vivian is trans, but if I'm not mistaken Beldam insinuating that Vivian is a man... is the insult.
Basically they are saying she's so ugly, she looks "man-like". Obviously this is hardly the case since the reality is that Vivian is better looking than either Beldam or Marilyn. I mean, that's a part of the joke after all.
I know Goombella tattles in Japanese also plays along with the statement, but gotta say is no one going to question Beldam's statement? If you've played the game Beldam notoriously lies and blames everything on Vivian. Beldam is the only one in the game who suggest that Vivian is a man, and considering everything, it was done as a cruel joke most likely.
Honestly it makes sense why the localizers didn't take this route, and just made it simple and clear cut with her sisters just calling her ugly instead and not opening up the possibility of Vivian possibly being an actual man.
I'm just saying I grew up in the 90's, and there were definitely people who used calling someone the opposite gender on purpose as an insult. So I can see how this could've been framed originally back in the day. Obviously now though there have been lots of people who took the Japanese direct translation as proof she's trans and claimed her, but honestly there is a high chance that it is a misinterpretation of what's going on.
Again as westerners trying to understand the sentiment being expressed in Japanese, without context, incredibly easy to do.
That said I could totally be wrong on this, but the only one who could confirm this for us is the original Japanese writer for TTYD. Regardless I won't be upset either way they go on this, who knows maybe a new localization will make this more clear now 20 years later.
I just hope that this whole topic doesn't end up the next outrage and then people boycott the remake or something and hurt it's sales, cause dear god do I want more Paper Mario's that have unique characters and spicy dialogue.
Also for Vivian I think it was only the English and German versions that omits any hints of her being trans while the other versions supposedly keep it, albeit to varying degrees
Yup! The Spanish version even named her Bibiana, after famous Spanish trans actress Bibiana Fernández, according to the writer
I think tec should stay blue. Red resembles Hal but that's been done a bunch..blue and white looks like glados
Tec is based on Hal. That's why they look like Hal
@@k_klaw2097 see above
What if, for the mandatory backtracking, they give you the option to directly warp there and not forced to walk to those places each playthrough, to minimize the time spent going from place to place, as the mandatory backtracking is clearly TTYD's greatest flaw. Similar to how some of the Pokemon games handled conserving time for backtracking. TTYD remake could do that to make the mandatory "General White" quest more tolerable. As those who's replayed TTYD so many times, may dread being needed to do mandatory backtracking every save file.
Even if they are going to play it safe and have not have Vivian be a transgender girl in the first place, I hope that they have a more creative reason for her sisters to be abusive than "they find her ugly". Her arc is still one of the better ones in the Paper Mario series with it spanning multiple chapters and being about a innocent fellow on the wrong side of the conflict before escaping abuse to be with a newfound fellowship. But it'd be neat to have her backstory have a bit more depth.
Um you can be trans and cis gendered dude.. We exist..
@FG_Man I'm terribly sorry for my mistake. I guess I still have much to learn about this.
What I meant to say is that "even if they were to not have Vivian be a transgender girl in the first place...". I will fix my OP.
I figured Vivian was bullied because Beldam is just a terrible person, or because they knew Vivian wasn’t fully committed to being evil and/or serving the Shadow Queen.
@@cadethumann8605 thank you
@@FG_ManAre you trolling? How can you be trans and cis at the same time? They're literally opposites.
This is why we aren't getting Mother 3
Don't know how nintendo would tackle vivian identity, but I prefer all three to be genderless since they are a purple ghosts or don't care if they change it or keep it a same since I only see vivian only a character.
It already going to be controvesary on both sides anyway, but we will see once it release/reveal
They look like chicks, so they'll be chicks.
4:44 wait, what? that's one way to make it public
I've heard some claims (cannot verify them myself) that parts of the Japanese script around Vivian's gender are insensitive. Like, apparently, Goombella misgendering her by accident as a 'joke'. Again, I don't read Japanese so cannot say for certain. Would this be a reason to bury the whole thing? Or an opportunity to fix it?
Who the fuck cares
In the Japanese version, every character calls Vivian a man, including her sisters, Goombella, minor NPCs, even the narrator.
They could still improve that part of the script then but still have her be trans.
Vivian is my fave
the story of Origami King was really dark in some spots, so honestly, I don't think they will change much
Haha, that's funny, Censored Gaming literally JUST uploaded a video about this today.
I thought I had clicked that at first
Wish we'd have gotten a paper mario collection
Intelligent Systems has grown more and more comfortable with representation lately, so I can see a world where the English localization will restore Vivian as being trans or possibly a crossdresser.
That said I wouldn't be surprised if they just kept her female like in the first English localization. Either way, Vivian's still the most wholesome party member of the group and I'm just happy a new generation of people get to appreciate her.
It wouldn't really make sense to make her a crossdresser, because the whole point of tension is that Vivian wants to be considered one of the sisters, rather than a brother. Beldam's rebukes of her suggest she thinks of Vivian as simply crossdressing, but the point of Viv's arc is that Beldam is WRONG about that.
@@andrewphilos Actually tht wuld support the "crossdresser" more tbh.
Wanting to dress as a woman as to be accepted by the sisters, which we know isnt really working since Vivian lacks the back bone to stand up for oneself.
Where Vivian's character arc was to gain confidence in oneself and not having to change for the approval of others; Which the sisters ended up gaining respect for Vivian after their karma came to them.
3:07 Or, the kid could talk about Warioware.
Shine Sprites are still in the game
