    Super super smart to say that it's like cooking and the boards are part of your recipe because you can buy convenience ingredients readily chopped onions, pre diced peppers, and more... Sometimes you buy ingredients that were prepared a very specific way that your kitchen can't handle. But sometimes you have a mixer, blender, sous-vide machine.

    The planer section was very good information for a beginner, well done there, but I don't think you did the router section justice. You didn't explain how a router can only be used to make one edge and one surface flat. If I were a first timer, it would sound like the router is doing the exact same job as the planer, and I could just use it to make one side flat, then flip it over and do the other side. It needs to be explained that this would indeed make two flat surfaces, but which aren't parallel to each other. Doing all four surfaces on a router would result in a trapezoid shape where neither of the surfaces or edges actually match each other. I know this was a very confusing concept to me when I started learning, but it needs to be learned quickly before a beginner thinks that they only need a router and not a planer as well, you can't have one tool without the other (not easily and not without a lot of extra work, anyway)

  • @AbbeyOmisol
    @AbbeyOmisol Před 4 lety +2

    if I turn the wood on the other side, would a jointer be able to make a uniform thickness lumber?

    • @leungj1000
      @leungj1000 Před 4 lety

      It may not be parallel to the other side so I think the answer is no.

  • @amielrumbaua8387
    @amielrumbaua8387 Před 4 lety

    Quick question, what about electric hand planers? Still as a planer, does it only make an even thickness? Or does it function like a jointer?

  • @theyardhero4049
    @theyardhero4049 Před 5 lety

    If I was making a cutting board would you recommend a planer or jointer?

    • @danoham10
      @danoham10 Před 5 lety

      As long as the pieces are relatively flat to begin with I usually just use a planer when your clamping put 2 clamps going across the strips that will help keep them as flat as possible

  • @The-Sentinel
    @The-Sentinel Před 4 lety

    wouldnt a jointer be able to make both sides flat and uniform thickness if you simply flip the board to attack it from both sides?

  • @droptodesignstevendavis8137

    What does it take to cut a 2x6 into two 1x6? In other words, how do split the board longways. Is that possible?

  • @dancruz8309
    @dancruz8309 Před 5 lety +2

    Did I miss it? Apologies if I did, why cant I just use the jointer all the way around?? Like, why cant I just use the jointer to get the thickness I want...

    • @curtieson
      @curtieson Před 5 lety

      I believe it is because with a jointer you get a flat side, but it is only flat with reference to itself. So you could have two flat sides but they would not be parallel. Think of a shim. The planer cuts the board so the board has a uniform thickness, and thus parallel.
